The thing is that a World Series game needs to be decided by the players on the field not the umpires. they could have called it a dead ball. Umpires are not supposed to make themselves bigger than the game

@keithlaw: Joyce burying himself here. Says the runner has the right to a clear baseline. Middlebrooks wasn't in the baseline. Yup. Can't even believe people on here are defending this call. Here is the piece of garbage Joyce during the play:

The Buchholz injury thing is a smoke screen. He can go 6 innings. Theres no way that Farrell uses Doubront , Workman and warms Dempster if Buchholz is really hurting. It's a smoke screen? Are you kidding me? Next you'll tell me that Elvis was still alive and he faked his death. Maybe you're right. I guess Buchholz' velocity creeping downward every inning last start was to make batters think he can't throw 95. And yeah, the Sox, other than the beards thing, really had no other storylines going for them, so they made up a story about how Buchholz might have shoulder weakness. To make it more convincing they moved up the ineffective Jake Peavy so he can pitch Game 3 and pitch twice if the Series went 7. But yeah a healthy Buchholz would only pitch Game 4 and once in the Series. Great fakeout by the Red Sox.

Just back from (yet another) non-profit get together. Last time I checked in via phone, it was the seventh and the Cards had gone ahead 4-2. Nice to see the team came back against Rosenthal, but it looks like a tough ending.
The Sox had gone relatively error free through the ALCS, but that seems to have caught up with them. Chris tweeted about how we really didn't think this would be easy, did we? Truth in that.
It's not over, but the fewer slips from here on out the better. Giving away runs isn't going to cut it.

How fitting is it that this game was lost on a play by a guy (Salty) who, because of an earlier horrible decision by Farrell, shouldn't have even still been in the game?

It was still a stupid throw. It was an idiotic throw by an awful defensive catcher. But holy crap that was a bad call. An embarrassment to MLB umpires, who all belong in the unemployment line as is.

I'd still rather see Bogaerts at SS and Mioddlebrooks at 3rd but Middlebrooks should have got that grounder and he still swings at bad pitches. Maybe we now see why Napoli is taking grounders at 3rd. Middlebrooks is a bad hitter and a worse fielder. I know the grass is greener on the other side and such, but Drew is twice the player Muddlebrooks is. i love how his first at bat he pops out on the first pitch. When will this kid learn how to take at bats?

Lets not forget how dumb Farrell is. What a joke. I'm surprised he can make it out the hotel room on the road.

Man, the last four World Series losses that I've seen have all been kicks to the groin - blown Game 6 of the 1986 World Series with the Red Sox one out/strike away from victory, a blown 3-0 Game 7 lead in the 1986 World Series, a blown 7th inning lead in Game 2 of the 2013 World Series, and a horrendous ending almost as bad as Game 6 of the 1986 World Series - in Game 3 of the 2013 World Series.
The lesson I'm learning is that if the Red Sox don't sweep the World Series, prepare to be extremely agitated and aggravated, and don't expect them to win the Series.
Thank God the 2004 Red Sox and 2007 Red Sox wanted no part of the BS and saved their A games for the World Series, and polished off the Series in 4 games each. Makes me appreciate those wonderful team all the more (and that includes the 2007 team which doesn't get enough love).

I get a ton of crap on this board (mostly deserved), but I've been all for keeping Drew in for his defense and starting Ross over Salty.

Why is Jim Joyce umpiring Big League games let alone WS games?
Also can the Baseball ops have someone in the dugout or a phone to tell Farrell what to do?

I never post on this site but after this pathetic call i have to. Craig is in fair territory and falls over middle brooks. Craig is fair territory by a foot. Its an absolutely pathetic call. Probably more like three feet. Just watched it and, yeah, a bad call. Check out the ESPN video (should be available for a bit longer) and the autopsy is pretty straightforward. You could just as easily say that Middlebrooks lifts his legs so that he won't be in the basepath. Craig, looking behind him, takes off in the wrong direction and gets himself tangled up. He's not near the basepath, and a yard from the chalk. In fact his left foot hits Middlebrooks almost in the ass, the reason why he tripped. This looks like a purely intrusive call on the part of the ump, wanting to rectify a situation he didn't need to rectify. If you come at this clear headed, the alternative is for Middlebrooks to put his feet down into the basepath where he would be obstructing the runner. A real stinker, and a tough way to lose. Not the first time this sort of thing has gone down, but it always sticks in the throat. Still tomorrow's another day. Add: Just saw this in the posts: @keithlaw: Joyce burying himself here. Says the runner has the right to a clear baseline. Middlebrooks wasn't in the baseline. Joyce would probably be wise to say as little as possible. There's simply too much video these days, from too many different angles, the plays end up being almost self-explanatory. He'll just dig himself an even bigger hole. The baseline is completely clear. Craig just isn't in it.

I would love an explanation for why Craig ran 3 inches to the inside of the 3rd base bag.

So far in the playoffs this year Salty has 19 strikeouts in 32 AB. And several key misplays in the field.

Quite honestly, there were more interference on the Fielder play at third in the Det series than on that play, Karma I guess.
On another note- Joe Torre does what now? If I was MLB I wouldnt allow him at any more press conferences.

SO MANY PEOPLE WERE yelling for benching drew and putting in WMB (here and other message board)... and what do you know it kind of cost us...... I was also for keeping Drew in at SS for defense over inserting WMB. Can't blame people for feeling otherwise though. Drew has killed the Red Sox over and over and over again with his lack of offense. The problem is that not only do you sacrifice defense by having WMB, but the man is clueless at the plate. I think somebody made a comparison of Butch Hobson to him which I can see and Butch's career was short-lived and WMB could be headed down that same road. The bottom line is you're looking at two awful choices. At least Drew does something positive even if it's pretty much wiped out by his Ray Oyler like post-season performance, but WMB is pretty useless on both offense and defense.

Throw this out there as well....How many coaches sit on the bench these days?, where are his Bench Coaches whispering in his ear? It falls on Farrell but somebody could have just thrown out the "Hey skip, double switch here?" on the bench. Maybe they did and he just decided against it, seems too obvious to decide against though.
