Lester apparently pitched through back stiffness tonight. Makes his performance all the more amazing.

Sorry, I didn't mean to start this silly debate again. I just wanted to appreciate Jon Lester for what he did tonight, and all postseason. Just pure, unadulterated dominance. Beautiful stuff. Me too... First well played game of the series top to bottom and a phenomenal outing from Lester and the D including his own. This Xander guy really 21? Not only that but he's from Aruba and he speaks four languages.

That didnt look good That comment was on the slip on the 2-0 pitch, looked like Lester paused for a bit after, like his back tightened or something, hopefully my imagination I knew something didnt look right, talk that something tightened up on him

Bogey should move up again in the lineup.
Ellsbury Victorino Pedroia Ortiz Napoli Bogaerts Nava Drew Ross
Boom.

Not only has he been pretty consistent making contact he has shown he will take pitches and work a walk. Doubt Farrell will do it but I can dream

I think David Ortiz just called Dan Shaughnessy a "F***er," during mlbtv post game interview.

“@jeffpassan: The last time the Red Sox clinched the World Series at home, the game took 1 hour, 46 minutes and crowd was 15,238. Baseball done changed.”
Uh it takes that long to get through 4 innings of a sox Yankee game now.

Can't say enough about the job Lester did tonight. I came out of Game 4 feeling pretty uneasy - it seemed like we had just thrown the kitchen sink out on the field to get that win and I wondered how much we had left to give. Lester and Ortiz righted the ship. Now we're going home for two shots at the title with a relatively rested bullpen and one of our best run-producing hitters back in the lineup. Hopefully the day off gets Victorino back in there too.
I'll take my chances. Go Sox.

John Lackey could win us a world series championship. Unfreakinreal. Caught between hoping Workman is the long guy out of the pen if he can't go over 6 innings in game 6 and Farrell doing the unfathomable and allowing the rookie pitch game 7 (should the Sox falter in G6) because Peavy has shown nothing his last 2 starts.

This should be the first post in the Game 6 thread, but I'll be largely off board for a while ...
Teams coming home needing just 1 win have played .600 ball against the opposition, despite having played 3 games on the road. You would expect them to play better than .600 ball in game 6.
And that's what happened. 24 wins and 15 losses, .615.
Once the series is tied 3-3, with 3 games in each city, you would expect the home team to play a bit better than .500 ball. And that's what's happened; 8-7, .533, which is as close to the normal home field advantage as possible.
Here's what I believe is the complete list, although I haven't double-checked it. I welcome any corrections.
Year Ser Home Result Road 1918 WS Red Sox won 6 Cubs 1924 WS Senators won 6 Giants 1930 WS Athletics won 6 Cardinals 1931 WS Cardinals won 7 Athletics 1935 WS Tigers . won 6 Cubs 1944 WS Cardinals won 6 Browns 1947 WS Yankees won 7 Dodgers 1951 WS Yankees won 6 Giants 1952 WS Dodgers lost Yankees 1953 WS Yankees won 6 Dodgers 1958 WS Braves lost Yankees 1960 WS Pirates won 7 Yankees 1964 WS Cardinals won 7 Yankees 1968 WS Cardinals lost Tigers 1977 WS Yankees won 6 Dodgers 1979 WS Orioles lost Pirates 1980 WS Phillies won 6 Royals 1990 CS Reds won 6 Pirates 1991 CS Pirates lost Braves 1992 CS Jays won 6 A's 1992 CS Braves won 7 Pirates 1993 CS Phillies won 6 Braves 1993 WS Blue Jays won 6 Phillies 1995 WS Braves won 6 Indians 1996 WS Yankees won 6 Braves 1997 WS Marlins won 7 Indians 1998 CS Yankees won 6 Indians 1999 CS Braves won 6 Mets 2000 CS Yankees won 6 Mariners 2003 CS Yankees won 7 Red Sox 2003 CS Cubs lost Marlins 2004 CS Yankees lost Red Sox 2008 CS Tampa Bay won 7 Red Sox 2009 CS Yankees won 6 Angels 2009 WS Yankees won 6 Phillies 2010 CS Rangers won 6 Yankees 2011 CS Rangers won 6 Tigers 2013 CS Red Sox won 6 Tigers 2013 CS Cardinals won 6 Dodgers So, historically teams in our position are 32-7, .821.

John Lester became the second Red Sox Lefty with 3 World Series wins last night. The other was Babe Ruth. Pitcher or hitter, if your name is mentioned with Ruth and World Series you got it done.
Ross has to join Xander in the must start list.
Drew has major vertical. He had to have been up 3 feet on the liner he caught.
Big Papi has glove. The reason the Twins stopped using him at first was he kept getting hurt on that cement field they had.

Thank goodness, since we all know how 1975 turned out.

I seem to recall something in the mid 80s. Teams coming home needing two wins (or going on the road needing to win one) are a completely different story. Two wins at home, down 3-2, has been done a lot, far more often than two wins on the road. After all, being up 3-2 after playing three of the five games at home -- that says nothing about which team is better.

ok, being someone who sat in the China Teahouse in Methuen during the end game 6 of the 86 world watching the horroe unfold and had to drive home and listen to eddie andleman counsel fans all night... this clinching at home talk by the news outlets and everyone else is really making me itchy...
cardinals are a good ballclub, smart ballplayers who work hard, that's all I'm sayin.

Very few teams can win game 6 and 7 on the road in the World Series. Especially with two rookies starting.
Tomorrow may be our best chance with Lackey though.

Its good, or sad depending on perspective to see there are still some of us left. Try as I may even with the entirely new culture It's still not what can go wrong but what is destined to go wrong some times.
