Jan 2014-June 2015 International Signings

I saw this guy during two weeks in Japan during the WBC so take this for what it's worth. Massive power but got beat inside near the hands and up in the zone. May not be as adept with advanced breaking stuff, but overall in the brief time I saw him, seemed like he had decent plate recognition and didn't seem to mind taking a walk. He is the kind of guy where, if a pitcher make a mistake he will crush it. He's also the kind of guy I would feel good about if he was swinging on first-pitch fastball strikes if they are middle, or middle-out. Chased some stuff out of the zone but he made solid contact as much as he missed when he did. He looked like a guy who could possibly produce a .250-260ish ave with decent OBP for that range at his peak with a ceiling of .330ish OBP at his peak BUT if he can learn to plug one of the two deficits in his swing - difficulty with breaking stuff in or outside, or FBs up and in - he could become a very dangerous man (think Encarnacion). The power is very real - BP was absurd. He'll hit alotta jacks. Average speed. He's young, too. He'll be a winter sign, open to the highest bidder. Laying off those pitches he can't handle is what plate recognition is all about. I imagine he'll never see a fastball in the majors.
[/b] Lol ya that 80mph pitch was a sizzler wasn't it!!!

It is also important to note that the guys who get the top international signing bonuses are not guaranteed to be all-stars or even make the majors. Check out this article from 2008 which outlines the top paid bonuses that year. I can't recognize anyone of those players who has made any significant contribution in the majors to date or who ever will. Conversely there are guys like Gregory Polanco who was signed for $150k who has the potential to be a perennial all star over the next 10 to 15 years. In the opposite direction the Red Sox signed Hinojosa for $4 million last October and he looks to be a journeyman pitcher that you could sign as a minor league free agent for short money any year. m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2008/09/Issue-10/The-Back-Of-The-Book/Top-Signing-Bonuses-During-Mlbs-International-Signing-Period.aspx?

He's from Cuba, a metric country. 80 MPH is about 135. It's a lot more difficult to catch up to 135 than 80. Simple math.

On MLB.com's top 30 international prospects, how valid are their "favorites"? Because I'd love to land the top 2 pitchers in the class, but if what they said was true the Yankees would end up with about 15 of those players.

He was more of an Oki type signing as a veteran IFA. On the other hand you reinforce the point I was making with that link. Signing the highest bonus doesn't mean much.

In a few weeks we'll find out what the Sox decide to do. With a strong drafting class, along with a few strong international signings, will keep fueling the Sox system.

This guy on OTM says he lives in Cuba and comps him more to ViciedoHe also compared him to Juan Carlos Linares which would certainly be damning someone with faint praise. For every Puig or Abreau coming from Cuba there are many more busts like Linares, Hinojosa, Viciedo, etc. it is even worse now that agents like Borass, Jay z, etc driving up the prices for even mediocre international players.

Useful to remember how impressive Linares' stats his last three years in Cuba were, basically around 1.000 OPS for ages 22, 23, 24. The basic stats are at www.soxprospects.com/players/linares-juan.htm.

He'll be a winter sign, open to the highest bidder." ---------------------------------------------------- Until they actually make a move like this I'd be a skeptic. I heard Tony Maz reference Tomas this aafternoon and just thought I don't think so. Power gets more difficult by the day to find and someone will always bid more.

How did the evaluate compare him to both Linares and Viciedo? They are very different players. If you were to mash up the two players and get Viciedo's offensive profile and Linares' defensive profile you would basically get Josh Reddick, who is a 3 win player. (This is not me implying any type of ceiling or projection for the guy, it is just an honest question.)

There were comments from a poster who said he was from Cuba who said the Tomas could be as good as Viciedo or as bad as Linares ( taking in consideration it was an anonymous poster). Law wrote that he has talked to a number of scouts who said that Tomas is not as good as either Puig or Abreu, good power, slow bat, below average defense, bad body , and project as low OBP with questions on whether he can hit major league hitting. So this guy is niot the next Puig, Abreu, or even Reddick for that matter. He appears to more like Willy Mo Pena. I would pass as he likely get a bonus significantly more than he is worth.

Tomas probally has more Willy Mo Pena in him then Jose Abrue/Cespedes. Trueth is hes gonna hit home runs play avg at best defense and hit some were around 230-280. He will get on base at a good rate it sounds like. Dudes young and has potenitel he can still achieve. Id love to add him if the numbers were right. I aint giving him no Abrue type money.
Should be noted Viciedo isnt a bad player. Hes very talented just hasnt put it togethar he is far from a bust. Linares sure and other sure they are bust.

As far as these things go, how much of a bust was Linares really though? He was 25, almost 26, when signed and paid a 750k signing bonus. Sure, he never made the majors, but that doesn't really seem like much of an investment for an older, international free agent.

Definitely glowing reports on both Espinoza and Acosta, especially the "he could be a super star" on Espinoza.

Has anyone posted the Anderson Espinoza video? Or have people shied away from it because it might qualify as porn? There are four more videos of him; all appear to be nearly a year old.

The videos were posted a few pages back, but I'm not sure how useful they are considering that they're a year old and are not that revealing to begin with.

Kiley McD "Yasmani Tomas just defected from Cuba: I have a report, video & how much scouts think he gets" sbb.scout.com/story/1413983"he's got a chance to play a solid right field. .... Scouts think ... a 45 or 50 bat (.250-260 average, .320-.330 on-base) and the question is if that will be enough to get to his 25 homer power in games, or he ends up being a platoon power bat.... It's worth noting that Puig was a similar size as Tomas when he defected, then during his first year with the Dodgers, he dropped a lot of weight and turned into a different, more dynamic player... I think Tomas' deal will be for 4-7 years and I'd say the reasonable expectation for Tomas would be in that $15-35 million area"
