Yeah, I agree that swinging at balls should be weighed much more than not swinging at strikes, and [Other Red Sox player]'s chase percentage is lower than most of his cohorts on that list. But that also means that he lets a lot of strikes go through, which is not something I would have previously thought about him (though it is also not a strictly bad trait-- see, e.g., the inclusion of Albert Pujols on that bottom-20 list).

There's really no reason to be hitting Middlebrooks after Pierzynski. Well, there isn't even a reason to have Pierzynski in the lineup at all, so....

That's because this board is filled with a bunch of negative nancies. It frustrates the hell outta me too. Aren't knuckleballs great? You know, I really don't mind the knuckleball at all so long as I don't have to watch it on a regular basis.

Day of rest for X-Man and Napoli. One poster's observation about Bradley's foot tap was interesting to say the least. Will be watching him today

Why is it that Farrell, and other managers, pick one game in which to rest more than one player. Napoli and Bogaerts both being rested today. Why not rest one today and the other tomorrow?

Chill out. Pete Abe said Xander is battling the flu. Not resting. Napoli 2/16 against Morrow.

Chill out. Pete Abe said Xander is battling the flu. Not resting. Napoli 2/16 against Morrow. I was totally chilled out until that last sentence of yours because it is exactly the kind of bullshit Farrell uses to make his stupid decisions. (To clarify, I'm not saying Napoli isn't 2/16 against Morrow, I'm saying it's a worthless piece of trivia.) To be clear, do you mean what he says is stupid or that the decisions are stupid? Because if Bogaerts is under the weather, and Carp does get some some playing time against a hard-throwing righthander, neither of those look particularly stupid.

Carp 3/10 with a HR vs Morrow. Napoli has a nagging thumb injury, day game after a night game. It's not a stupid decision. And, it's not bull****. Using 10 or 16 AB sample sizes to help you decide anything absolutely is bull****. If Napoli is a true-talent .300 hitter against Morrow there is a 10% chance he will go 2/16 or worse. If Carp is a true-talent .200 hitter against Morrow there is a 12% chance he will go 3/10 or better. There have been extensive studies showing that using such small samples is absolutely and undoubtedly worse than just using a batter's results against all pitchers of the same handedness. Now, it happens that Napoli has a 125 career wRC+ against RHP and Carp has 114, so the drop off (from a batting standpoint) is not very large, but bringing up these SSS results shows that you are arriving at your conclusions the wrong way entirely.

You look rather silly when you make grandiose statements about things like giving a guy a day off against a hard-throwing righty. Dude, it is what it is. Should Napoli play 162? You look rather silly when you don't actually read what I say. I don't necessarily think the end result is horrible in this case, but the process by which the decisions are made is broken. You, nor I know the reason that lineup was posted. So, sharpen up the resume. Send it to Cherington. Maybe, we can get you to make the line-up out each night instead of the manager who the f'n World Series his first year in Boston.

... Should Napoli play 162? The answer is no. It will be great if he squeezes in 145 games this year. They also have to find playing time for Carp. Since watching him circle balls out there, as if he's a pilot looking for the right runway, makes me real nervous, I'd rather that be given time at firstbase or DH. So this one doesn't look all that foolish to me. And even though the sample size is small, so are the differences in their overall skill against righthanded pitchers as mg highlights. But that makes this look smart, not stupid. I'll be the first to admit that strange stuff can come out of a manager's mouth surrounded by 10 mics. But the logic behind this decision looks ok to me.

Jason Mastrodonato ?@jmastrodonato now Buchholz pitching today, coming off one of his worst starts ever. He sat down and compared video to last year and found instant fixes.

Small strike zone today... hopefully only applies to Blue Jays pitchers.

I just deleted a handful of the posts regarding the Napoli day off. Even though this is a game thread, some of this needs to be curtailed. PMs have been sent where I deemed it necessary. On to the game ...

Yeah, right. Pierzynski's continued inability to block pitches in the dirt is starting to be a problem. He just looks so rigid and stiff out there, and it looks like age might be catching up to him.

He completely sinks any team this chance has of winning on the day he starts. No wait, it's all BABIP's fault.

His player page says he has one option remaining. As a player with 5+ years of service time, the Red Sox would have to get his consent to option him down. I don't think Buchholz would willingly accept an option unless he reaches Daniel Bard-levels of ineptitude.
