I wonder if we could trade Peavy and a prospect to KC for Bubba Starling whose struggling ? Another option mentioned here many times would be trying to trade for josh Bell. What do you realistically think it would take to get either one of those prospects?
I don't think the trade market is as robust as you think it is.
Jake Peavy has been terrible this year. He can't keep the ball in the ballpark, his control isn't pinpoint anymore, and his stuff is diminished and he has a high price tag.
Even with the Sox paying the bill they wouldn't get anything that resembled a prospect. At best think a middle relief arm at this point.
Sending Peavy out to pitch every 5th day isn't helping his value any.
In a way I think Lester, Lackey, and Uehara are all tied to one another and it starts with Lester. If the Sox think they have a legit shot at signing Lester, they need to do so. Honestly if he's willing to take 6 years $140 million, the Sox should do the deal. Nobody in the system, even Owens, projects to do what Lester has done all these years and with his clean mechanics, I would think you'd get at least four more years out of Lester similar to what we've seen.
I know you're bullish on the kids, but I'm doubtful you'd get that from any of them. Owens is promising, but his control isn't wonderful and his fastball is so-so. Doesn't mean that he can't be a strong #3 type starter, but I don't expect him to replace Lester.
Workman is homerprone and Rubby has occasional lapses in control. They should make excellent relievers or solid back of the rotation starters although I do think that De La Rosa has a shot at being more than that. Webster, Barnes and Ranaudo are likely back of the rotation types.
So the Sox need to re-sign Lester (I wouldn't be shocked to see him wind up in pinstripes). If they do they need to make sure Lackey is back and keep Uehara around unless they feel like watching winnable games slip away in the 9th inning, something despite everything else that has gone wrong this year, hasn't been a problem. It's usually not a problem when you have the best closer in baseball, and despite his age, I see no reason he'd fall off a cliff the next season or two.
If they can't sign Lester, they're not going to be able to replace him adequately, and odds are 2015 won't be a competitive season. If that's the case, then yes, deal Lester, Lackey, and Uehara and see if you can come away with a prospect of Joc Pedersen's resume and/or a strong starting pitching prospect.
But if those three aren't on the table, the Sox aren't getting much of anything unless they find a way to fleece some silly GM, and although that can happen in real life, it happens much more often in the minds of posters like us.
