The more I've been thinking about it I think Carlos Quentin is what we need. His only problem is staying healthy. I was reading his OPS is .438 at home while .729 away from Petco. He has easy power and can play left. He just needs to get away from Petco and stay healthy. He won't cost much in regards of prospects or money. He's making 9.5 million this year and 8 next year. He's only 31 years old as well. I also wanted to raise this question to the forum can we be buyers and sellers this year ? I could see us trading someone like Peavy for some outfield help, AJ Pierzynski , or a reliever for some prospects. What are your thoughts ? I Agree, I really think one of our pitchers will be traded. Obviously, i think the odd man out is going to be peavy. However, what can we get for him? a 2nd level prospect? Pierzynski, as far as im concerned i am done with him. He is a train reck at the plate, no discipline whatsoever. Why would we sign him? i complete bust in my opionion. i would trade AJ and play Swihart!!! LET THE KID PLAY! Swihart has not even played triple A yet, give him some time. The guy who should be getting a shot in the bigs is Christian Vazquez. Neither AJ nor Ross have been assets this season so replace one of them with Vazquez and platoon the other one. As for the pitchers, clearly there is a logjam and I am very interested to see what the Sox decide to do with Lester (FA), Lackey (1 yr left at insanely low $), Peavy/Doubront/Buch (Veterans who are underperforming), RDLR/Workman (Proven they belong), and Webster, Barnes, Ranaudo (Knocking on the door).

...which would still make him not much more than a replacement-level player, considering his atrocious defense. Well ZiPS has him at +0.4 WAR, and Fenway's LF is small. Also he would be a better option to spell Ortiz at DH than Pierzynski. He is quite certainly inferior to Mike Carp, though, so if Carp is coming back anytime soon we don't need him. There are no 10-day contracts in MLB, right? You could try to include an advanced consent clause, which gives the Red Sox 45 days to cut him for any reason, but he might be able to get a fully-guaranteed contract somewhere else. Even then, though, he'd have to be more useful than all of Herrera or Hassan or Cecchini, which I'm not sure is necessarily the case. He'd only get playing time when Ortiz needs a day off (but how often is that going to happen before Victorino returns? Maybe once or twice, even assuming Shane has a setback or two?) or as a pinch-hitter (but for who? Bradley?).

Ibanez doesn't really figure to have a spot on the Sox, but the Yankees seem like a match. They've gotten .197/.253/.363 out of the DH spot this season, which is laughable. Ibanez is a left-handed pull hitter who is old, who makes him a perfect fit for stadium and team.

i would trade AJ and play Swihart!!! LET THE KID PLAY! For 2015, how about if we move Swihart to LF at Pawtucket? He is a tremendous athlete and this would relieve him of the rigors of catching, adding years to his career. He has power and speed, a dynamic we are vastly lacking currently.

He could do that until he was forty or fifty, easily.

Posted completely without comment ... here are the 2012-14 OF leaders in fWAR per 600 PA, the three years weighted 5-4-3 and by PA. Minimum 110 PA this year, or active this year and the equivalent in previous seasons. So, yeah, a lot of SSS guys included.
The flaky thing is that it only includes years in which a guy played the OF, so Holt is ranked only on this year (and his WAR reflects his time at 3B, too).

I was reading an article by Nick Cafardo in which he said the Red Sox were scouting Matt Kemp all last week. However he said he spoke to GM Ned Colletti who said he isn't dealing Kemp. My take away from the whole article is their most definitely interested in unloading Kemp, also while reading I saw that most GM's are high on Christian Vazquez, and most trades from the Red Sox they are asking for him first. One other side note now that SD Padres GM is fired Ican see a fire sale coming now.

Interesting that twice in the past few weeks I've read other pieces where Vazquez was mentioned as a likely GM request. On the surface, it looks good because of the presence of Swihart but the problem there is that we would once again be headed into a season with no reasonable catching alternatives.

Unless something has changed, the scouting report on Kemp is that he cannot play the field anymore. Like anywhere. We already have a DH.
Sorry, we just got rid of our miraculous health comeback player of the decade. Don't want another, especially for 4 years, no matter how much LA chips in.

I'm pessimistic about fixing the OF this year. Let's play it out and see where we are at. Some off-season targets for lf would be; Cargo, Nelson Cruz and Melky Cabrera. The latter two are free agents and Cargo due 3/53 over the next 3. I think that causes Colorado's asking price to drop. Go after the bigger fish following the 2015 season; Heyward or Stanton. I think Stanton will stay in Miami. But, who knows.

I have to agree, Kemp looks really bad in the field. Cherrington probably needs to pass on Kemp.

If BC is going to target an LA outfielder, I'd zero in on Joc Pederson. He's got 17 HR already in 73 games at Albuquerque (AAA). Granted that venue made even Jerry Sands look good, but Joc is hitting .320 for the season. With an outfield of Kemp-Ethier-Puig and Crawford, there's no place for Joc to play. Crawford is untradeable. Kemp would be very hard to deal. Puig is going nowhere. Ethier has been mentioned in trade rumors, too, but there doesn't seem to be much interest.
Bell looks like a good target too. He is at Advanced A, whereas Pederson is ML ready now. The PIT OF looks set with Marte-McCutchen and now, Polanco.
Boston has the pitching to offer and a crying need for power in the field.

Daniel Nava is now .391 / .472 / .457 (53 PA) since June 7, and, much more importantly, looks like Daniel Nava again.
JBJ came into this road trip hitting .192 / .264 / .263 on the road, with a 34.5% K rate. He opened up his stance, going back to the way he hit before his MLB struggles last year. The Sox have averaged only 3.3 R/G on the trip, but JBJ has hit .292 / .320 / .375, and fanned just twice in 25 PA (8.0%). Tiny SS, but promising.
Warning, SSS wackiness ensues!
And, in fact, if you take that line and adjust it via his home / road splits coming into the road trip, you get an overall .344 OBP and .408 SA. His PECOTA mean projection? .346, .405, I shit you not.
No, what he's done in these 7 games has little or no predictive value. But what we can say is that for these 7 games, we've seen the hitter people expected.

I've got the urge to spend some money. Identify our prospects you want to build around; Xander, Mookie and Swihart/Vazquez. We don't have to be KC and hope they all work out. And, I'm getting very confident Mookie can handle CF and lead-off next year. Maybe, JBJ can boost his trade value. We will have near-rookie contracts at the following positions; C, SS, 3B and CF. I think I'd go hard after Nelson Cruz and trade for Cargo. Cargo only has 3 years left at 54m. That's a lot. But, the AAV is 11.5m for luxury tax purposes. Would JBJ, Coyle and P prospect get him? Could we get Cruz at 3/60m? This would look more like a Boston Red Sox line-up.
Mookie - CF Pedey - 2B I'm fine swapping him and Xander as Bogaerts improves. Cargo - RF Papi - DH Cruz - LF Also, Papi insurance. He can't hit forever can he? Napoli - 1B Xander - SS Holt - 3b Vazquez - C
AAV of that line-up is 79m. Spend 8m on bench. Nava, Herrera, catcher. Need to deal Victorino. Like the guy. But, want Cruz. Can be talked out of it. Defense purposes, career year, etc. But, he rakes in Fenway. Might get Beltre like production at the plate. Still have plenty to sign Lester and extend Lackey.

Kemp's WAR is -1.0 and he is in the negative ranges in defensive metrics. and his range factors are way down from his past. He is hitting .270, which is what he hit the entire season last year in about the same number of at bats. His OPS this season is .789 compared to .723 last year. So, he is a bit better this year, but is not performing anywhere close to justifying his salary of $21 million.
Based on Nava's apparent return to his 2013 form, he probably will have a better record than Kemp by the end of the season.
Trading for Kemp would appear to be about as counter-productive as was the signing of Drew.

Here's a real possibility for the LH corner OF bat we need to hit behind Napoli in 2015: Brandon Moss. He'll be going into his next to last arb year, and hence he's going to be much more expensive. That's pretty much a typical time for Beane to cash in on a guy. He's a slightly better than average RF, and a bit better than that in LF. He's a pull hitter not ideally suited for Fenway, but there's no better fit out there I can find.
There are lots of ways you can fit him, Mookie, and some combo of Victorino, JBJ, Nava, and Holt into the OF, where Victorino largely fills Gomes' platoon role. In fact, I'd love to resurrect Earl Weaver and let him platoon the gang (with Mookie playing every day), using today's info instead of Earl's famous index cards. Whether Farrell would be up to doing that is another question.

I think they would hold onto Moss. They have some money coming off the books in the bullpen and Moss is only making $4.1 million. Even if he doubles his salary he'd be a bargain.
Unfortunately the 2014 OF can only be improved from within bc there probably won't be many bats on the market and besides we suck and shouldn't trade our prospects unless it's a guy with some control left. Going forward next year I don't think we can count on Victorino being anything more than a 4th OF due to injuries. Try to find a bopper for LF and go with Mookie in RF.

I wonder if we could trade Peavy and a prospect to KC for Bubba Starling whose struggling ? Another option mentioned here many times would be trying to trade for josh Bell. What do you realistically think it would take to get either one of those prospects?

We need to sell off pieces while selectively buying at the trade deadline. We need to trade AJ and promote Vazquez. Let Peavy re establish himself a bit and ship him off and promote Rubby. We can sell off a pen arm like Breslow or Mujica if possible. Doubront is tricky bc/ I think out of the pen he's a real asset but he said he prefers to start we could get a B + prospect for him bc/ he's a lefty who throws hard and an established starter in the AL east. Also trade out Drew however I don't think it's going to happen. They value his glove too much to let him go unless end overwhelmed by an offer which I don't see happening. We're in a great position come the trade deadline to add while subtracting. If we're not contending then we should deal our better players. If Lester doesn't accept his deal ship him out for a huge return. I doubt he'd return at the money the Sox would offer him. He's not worth 25 million a year either. Same with Lackey if he won't come back for the minimum or do a fair 2 year deal trade him out most likely offseason. We could trade Koji but I'd prefer not to just in case we can contend next season. I truly believe in the pitchers they have coming up. While none are a number one they all are solid 2's and 3's. If we can take a risk with some trades for high upside prospects with power we'll have a cost efficient young core for years to come, or take the prospects acquired and make a run at a big time player like Stanton. I feel like that' should be the plan. I hope most of you agree.

I recently was reading some articles based on the Red Sox trade interests. Bare in mind I have no idea how reputable the sitesor their sources are. I Was reading an article from Fan Sided that linked the Red Sox and Royals to Marlon Byrd. Which makes a lot of sense seeing as how for over a month now they've been scouting and linked to one another. According to Matthew Khory from Over the Monster he talked to a prospect expert in his words and said the next big Red Sox trade will be one that's off the radar" someone who isn't believed to be available. Which left me wondering who could this mystery player be? I read an article by Dan Pittman of the Gospel Herald in which he links the Sox to Seth Smith, or Alex Gordon. Gordon would seem to fit the bill but he's not Right Handed. Another guy I've had a hunch on who could help would be Ryan Zimmerman from Washington. They seem to have one too many players without rotating. He's a right handed bat playing left field and can play 3B or 1B if needed. Anyway let me know what you guys think.

No thanks on Byrd, we had him hear once, and for the most part he struggled. Now that we have Mookie, i dont see us trading for a outfielder. And don't forget, we have Victorino signed for 1 more year at 13 million.

Two guys you might trade for who would probably represent mild upgrades to Nava are Seth Smith and Matt Joyce.
If the Dodgers wanted to essentially eat all of Ethier's contract to make room for Joc Pederson, he'd be comparable, but I'm not even sure he'd be as good as either of those guys. But the acquisition cost might conceivably be less. (And it might actually make more sense for them to trade Kemp, who would actually have value as a DH, or eat Crawford's contract instead.)
That really pretty much exhausts the trade possibilities. It seems to me that the upgrade has to come from within, for the most part: Bradley's new / old swing, Mookie, Holt, and maybe a healthy Victorino at some point.
It's looking more and more like Victorino: 2013 :: Foulke : 2004, no? You never regret any deal that clearly put you over the top for a championship, but I wish we could see that guy again.

I wouldn't mind seeing Victorino as our 4th OF next year. Finally, a guy who can backup CF/RF and is also good vs. LHP. Even though we're swimming with those guys now...
Breathe easy fellow fans, we may never have to see Gomes or Nava in RF again.
It'll be really interesting to see roster moves if/when Victorino/WMB/Carp are ready to return. The first to go down would be Herrera, but then the 2nd? And I guess we can assume that WMB will stay in AAA awhile.
