Now that Buchholz and Workman is are coming back there must be some room on the phantom DL for Peavy and Doubront, right? If by "phantom DL" you mean "the roster of another big league team," certainly. Even better if there was room on that roster for Doubront and Peavy. Pirates need two bottom of the rotation starters.

Within the organization, they have plans in place that are based in the belief that the Sox will not compete for the playoffs this season. And discussions about what it would take coming back to approve a trade of various players.
Within the organization, they have plans in place that are based in the belief that the Sox will compete for the playoffs right up to the final weekend. And discussions about what they would be willing to trade to acquire various players.
I suppose it creates an organization of two minds. I know when I do that, people notice that I am talking to myself, but I prefer to think of it as a business meeting. Me, too!
"One large cut hurts less than these tiny slices and this current team is miserable. Get it over with." For most of the country, baseball is a daily routine of tiny slices. And it is never over.
Peavy. Breslow. Capuano. 27 1/2-year old Alex Wilson, even. Etc. SHip 'em, Dano.
Marrero-Betts-Owens. The DEC '15 Rule 5 class. Don't need to see 'em in Boston this season.

No reason not to see them in Boston this season either. It doesn't change anything about their status.
A note on Doubront. I watched the last game he pitched for the PawSox and he was excellent. 5IP 0H 2BB 10K but there were a few troubling signs. First, pitch count 95 pitches but more important, fastball velocity. In the first inning he sat 92-93. It gradually went down and by the fifth it was 88-90. Watch for that tonight, could be a tell.

If both pitchers go deep, we could have a four hour game just based on accumulated pitch times.

Did not want to start a separate thread, but if you have a chance read the article Essence of Velocity by Jason Thurbow ( Google, not good with links here). It is a story about a pitching concept, effective velocity, that is practiced by Trevor Bauer, Indian's hurler who is having a good season after being rejected by Arizona. It is an intuitive concept back up by extensive studies and data conducted by Perry husband, former minor league player and coach. Fascinating concept and story and one that helps to explain the success of guys like Koji and shed some light on pitchers like Owens. Seems the idea can be explained to some extent with the notions of location, "deception", and disrupting a hitter's timing and rhythm. Great stuff. Like to hear someone like Eric comment on it. It is up his alley.

If you put them in Boston now, team control is just as long as if you put them in Boston on opening day next year, plus they get a chance to adjust to major league pitching with slightly less pressure (assuming we are in a sell scenario). You don't even use an option if you put them on the 25-man roster directly and keep them in the majors throughout the season. So what's your point?

Is any further explanation necessary? Or, Betts aside, do you really expect Owens & Marrero to start 2015 on the 25-man roster next year?

Pawtucket assignment unlikely.

DFAed, I believe teams have two days to put in claims. If he passed then, with his approval, he could have been assigned to Pawtucket.
I'm glad there's interest, I have nothing but admiration for his effort. I hope he goes on to win an MVP. LOL, then we can hear the SP psychologists explain that he couldn't handle the pressure of playing in Boston.

Sizemore might have been better off playing for a team with less pressure, and I hope he gets that chance. I always liked him and I was really hoping he would work out for the Sox. The few times I saw him play I thought his timing and pitch recognition were way off. He needed many more reps to have a chance to get back to anything like he once was. Maybe he can get those somewhere. I wish him the very best.

I was thinking that I saw in tweets that it was a DFA. I could be wrong but then Cafardo's tweet would make no sense, not that Carfardo's tweets usually make sense.

I think what happened was he was DFA'd originally, then released a few days later. The Sox then said that they would be happy give him a minor league deal and give him ABs in AAA if he couldn't find major league work elsewhere.

Unsure why a team would want to trade for him. Besides the PTBNL...they'll have to honor his contract...and the incentives are near kicking in. Why not wait until you can just enter in a new agreement with him on new terms.

Yes, I'm stupid. Please explain it to me. I don't expect Owens and Marrero to start 2015 on the 25-man, but they'll have to burn an option next year either way. If and only if you can commit to keeping them on the 25-man all year this year then it's OK to call them up, because that way they won't burn an option this year. On Sizemore, my recollection was that he was first DFAed, then released outright a day or two later.

Pawtucket assignment unlikely. Thanks, saw it (on the last page, wouldn't you know). Haven't digested the article yet, but seems to reinforce pitching skills that some have been preaching such as disrupting timing. The Owen's discussion touch upon some of the notions, but the article added to the discussion. Noticed that SOSH has started a thread on it. Suspect that not every pitcher can do what the article suggests, as you need good command and a certain feel for pitching, especially the timing element.

I lost count. Does that mean we have 13 pitchers available tonight?

Remember, Workman is suspended but still takes up a spot on the 25-man active roster. So it's the same seven-man bullpen tonight.

Owens et al do not need to be added to the 40 man this offseason. Barnes, et al, do. Thus Owens will not necessarily use an option next year, and probably won't in my opinion. At the very least there's no need to have them take up 40man spots several months early. Your comments rather apply to Barnes et al, who will need to be added early in this offseason. That's why I pointed out 2014 vs 2015.
