Still hate the 2014 RS hitters as we made every opponent pitchers looked ace. This line up still trouble with hitting. Hembree pitched so well & wish the line up do something for him. Well deserve win.

Most of RS players still in Eastern time zone mental & likely dead tired. No life. Just brutal to play in different time zone. I knew we have no chance with Workman pitching. Game ending HR.

End of that horrible game by the Sox. Good game by Hembree.

Hembree was outstanding. Shame we couldn't push anything across.
Probably a good time to mention that in both MLB and AAA, Brandon Workman has been pretty terrible this year. He's sporting a FIP above 4.50, and at the MLB level, his lowest ever K%, highest ever BB%, and diminished FB velocity. And he hasn't gotten unlucky, allowing a sub-.250 BABIP. Hard not to think we'd be better off putting him in the pen (where hopefully he could tick up the velocity a little bit) and let Ranaudo get an extended look in the rotation.

It's too bad Hembree won't get another inning to pitch. Farrell botched the job by hand it over to Workman.

Tim Britton ?@timbritton 4m Hembree will be optioned. Deserve ain’t got nothin’ to do with it, as Snoop said.
I have no idea who the Sox will call up, I don't think Wilson has been back long enough and Pawtucket used relievers today. Whoever it is only has about 10 hours to get there.
Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 4m Players, coaches coming up to Hembree shaking his hand in the clubhouse. Last went 4 innings as a college soph in 2009.
For the record, 62 pitches, 39 strikes. 4IP 2H 2BB 2K 0R.

Agreed. He was the hero of the game, though they lost. Saved another SP with those 4 fine innings of relief. I do think the obvious option is Layne, but Hembree will need at least 2-3 days of rest before he is able to pitch again. Hembree showed very nice FB, decent location and a fair slider today. Good speed, up to 95. Much more than Layne will ever have.
I'd sincerely hope he's recalled ASAP and quickly replace Layne on the 25 man after seeing him today vs MLB hitters, some 2x.

Tim Britton ?@timbritton 1m 40-man options to supplement Red Sox pen tomorrow: Drake Britton and Edwin Escobar. Ranaudo, Wilson and Wright not down 10 days yet.
And Britton has been pitching like crap.

We're only talking about his missing one start. Whoever gets the promotion will be temporary.
For my two cents, I hope it works out that Workman ends up in the pen and Ranaudo ends up with a rotation look see. I'm not at all swayed by the DIPS argument that says major league hitters will rake him or by those that think Workman has a future in the Boston rotation. Just my opinion though, your mileage may vary.

Workman is a real Bulldog. Has a LOT of Lackey in him in that regard, but think when he's in the relief role? Some of it's not there. Also, think he's better as a starter with the 3 pitches. cutter, FB, curve. He's got 3 good pitches that if they'd actually allow him to throw on a schedule, rather than sit him for 5- days and then go, he'd do a lot better. Now.. If they can find a way to get Ranaudo some regular starts, am all for that as well. Would rather see those come at the expense of Webster/Bucholz now, or RDLR when he hits his innings limit however and with Barnes begining to throw consistent good games together they will probably HAVE to get him a few starts in during September as he has more raw talent than any of th guys who began the season at Pawtucket this year. It will be interesting how they manage the starts.

Dude, really? The guy can't pitch again today and the Red Sox need someone who can. And Mike Carp isn't on the team anymore so I don't see what choice the Red Sox had here.

Personally I believe Britton got hosed from last year. He pitched pretty good out of pen and he had options so the usual happens you use him for depth. He has bad year probably bored or pissed which is not a good excuse but people are human. I still want to see what he could do at the top level. Wilson too for that matter.
There's like about 6 guys who fall in this area and the Sox need to see what they have. Now is the time to take advantage.

The Red Sox have open spots on the 40-man; they could call up almost anyone. The problem is travel. Early game, AAA is in Charlotte, AA is in Richmond. Monday is a day off.

The Red Sox have open spots on the 40-man; they could call up almost anyone. The problem is travel. Early game, AAA is in Charlotte, AA is in Richmond. Monday is a day off. Ely, Verdugo, Villareal, and Celestino are all mlfa's who have a non-zero chance of landing on someone's 40-man roster this winter. Adding one of them now is a no-lose proposition. If they're not great, DFA them and that's a wash. Ross and Victorino can be placed on the 60-day DL, so even with Lavarnway coming off it, they have room to add three such players. They could eventually add all four plus Gibson if they trim two of Brown, Johnson (neither of whom has any future or function), Breslow, and Badenhop. Verdugo in 10 innings of relief has given up 4 hits and 4 walks, and fanned 15. Villareal's allowed 1 hit in 6.1 and fanned 7, but walked 8. They both pitched an inning last night. Ely and Celestino pitched Friday. Ely's FIP is high (3.94) but he's gotten results all year (.235 TAv allowed), while Celestino has a 5.29 FIP, 4.85 ERA, and .282 TAv allowed since his promotion to AAA, so he's unlikely.
