One of the only things I enjoy more than baseball is music. I figure some posters from this diverse community might feel the same way about music and hopefully will enjoy stuff I've never heard of. I'm always looking for new recommendations, whether it's literally new or something I might've overlooked or never heard from the past. So if anyone feels passionately about an artist, album, song, producer, etc. I'd like to hear about it. I'm open to all genres and eras.
I'll go first with a new song and video. It's by a female artist from England called FKA Twigs. She just dropped her debut album and it's pretty great, she also has some older videos and a couple EP's I really like. Her lyrical content is highly sexualized but I'm in for the voice, the production, and the overall artistry. It's some blend of R&B and electronic music. I guess the easy comp would be Aaliyah with a more experimental version of Lorde's production. Fans of Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, or AlunaGeorge will probably enjoy this.

I'm into music and periodically come across something spectacular that I somehow missed. Here's a video of the song My Back Pages performed in 1992 at a tribute to Bob Dylan. www.facebook.com/video.php?v=574887372647634&set=vb.288530094616698&type=2&theaterBob Dylan, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Neil Young and Roger McGuinn plus one other that I don't know (the blonde guy with the pompie hairdo). Fantastic piece but unfortunate that it took place after Orbison died. 2 million Facebook views in 4 days, that's a lot for FB.

My two cents: City and Colour, he also just did a collaboration with Pink, which sounds weird but it's quite good. That one is you+me

I'll toss this out there. I discovered this song listening to All Songs Considered. I get into week-long spurts of being obsessed with it

Well being an old school 70's rock and roller I am going to focus on some old pre-1980's stuff, that you may or may not know about. But most of it is pretty heavy on the guitar...
First up is George "Dr. Funkenstein" Clinton's band, Funkdelic...Maggot Brain.

I prefer 60's stuff and the movie "Jersey Boys" was right in my wheelhouse.

For those of you into music history and who have Facebook, Sydney Urshan posts several videos everyday. He's apparently a DJ from England. If you go to his page then "like" it, his postings will show up on your news feed.

I don't know if it fits the thread, but I'm posting this on my lunch at work so I just thought I'd mention when I get aggravated dealing with angry people (which is often), I like to listen to "Closing Time" by Semisonic. I find it calming and relaxing. "Let it be" by the Beatles also works great.

(Unintentionally) Sticking with the theme of songs with the word "brain" in the title.
Ten Years After - 50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain

If you use reply instead of post quick reply, you can use the video icon to post videos from some sources including YouTube.
ADD: When you see the video you want to post (use the video above as an example), right click on it and 'copy video URL'. Then paste it in reply/insert video.

I think if you just include a YouTube link in your post, it automatically shows the video (and you don’t need to bother with the insert video thing).

I can't say that I'm a Steve Vai music style fan although I'll grant that you don't get more technically proficient than he is.
This group performance blows me away, wait for the part after the crowd thinks they are done:
That entire Crossroads Guitar Festival is worth the watch for a blues fan.

CONFIRMED GOOD ALBUMS OF 2017:
Mutoid Man - War Moans
12 songs, 39 minutes. Grade: 60+. Genre spanning hardcore/metal album, loud, fun, right mix of sincerity and parody.
Pile - A Hairshirt of Purpose
13 songs, 46 minutes. Grade: 65. If you ever wanted an album that sounds like a combination of Radiohead and The Jesus Lizard, and I don't know why you wouldn't, here it is. For a genuinely weird art rock album, it's super catchy and listenable.
Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile To The Surface
11 songs, 50 minutes. Grade: 65+. I might have pushed this to 70 if not for the relentlessly bleak sad bastard lyrics. Musically, it's gorgeous.
Elder - Reflections on a Floating World
6 songs, 65 minutes. Grade: 65. Stoner prog, hell yeah. The nicest distorted guitar tone you ever did hear.
Sylvan Esso - What Now
8 songs, 29 minutes. Grade: 60. Minimalist electronic art pop. Vocal hooks are hooky.
Wire - Silver/Lead
10 songs, 37 minutes. Grade: 55+. Old school gothy post punk. Best by them in... a long time, probably.
ODESZA - A Moment Apart
16 songs, 60 minutes. Grade: 50+. Didn't grab me as much as their last, still a solid album of whatever the hell you call music like this.
PROBABLY GOOD ALBUMS OF 2017:
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
14 songs, 55 minutes. Grade: incomplete. Haven't actually dug into this one much yet. Safe to assume it's great.

I think this is the one that god tried to post above:
ADD:
It appears to have been removed from youtube, maybe a copyright complaint.

FTHW, can confirm that Damn. is up to Kendrick's typical level of greatness (I'm a huge Kendrick stan, and I'm not even the biggest hip-hop fan, honestly), but will admit I needed a few listens and probably need a few more to really get my head around it. I spent most of my initial time with the album just jamming DNA. and Humble. on repeat. I'm geeked to hear what he does exec producing the Black Panther soundtrack. The lead single he did with SZA (whose album I probably need to check out) is great.
Kind of interesting: he re-released Damn. recently with the tracks ordered in reverse. Interesting concept.
By the way, can someone sell me on whether or not current hip hop is as terrible beyond a few artists as I think it is? I've come to grips with the fact that it might just be me getting old, but I feel like everyone's trying to be Future right now with their flows (that sleepy sort of relaxed thing), and I do not love Future. I feel like there's Kendrick and Chance and a couple others. Also, someone tell me where to start on J. Cole.

I feel like there's Kendrick and Chance and a couple others. Also, someone tell me where to start on J. Cole. I mean yes, hip-hop portrayed in the mainstream media is pretty cringeworthy overall. I agree with your exceptions of Kendrick and Chance and would add Run the Jewels. I hate to make a mainstream vs. underground distinction in 2018, but I can say there is still some really interesting hip-hop being made that won't receive any Grammy nominations anytime soon. It kind of depends how obscure or abstract your tastes are. That said, its not like Kendrick makes highly accessible music. You need to be willing to follow his lyrics and concepts to fully appreciate his music. TPAB is a really challenging but rewarding listen for example. If you're interested in checking out some under-the-radar albums, start with these: Open Mike Eagle - Brick Body Kids Still Daydream Oddisee - The Good Fight (Iceberg is another album of his that is pretty great) Quelle Chris - Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often If you can handle even more abstract hip-hop, then I'd further recommend artists like Homeboy Sandman, Milo, Aesop Rock, Danny Brown, and Elucid, all of which have pretty consistently made quality music in the last handful of years.

I gave the heading to David Gilmour's guitar solo is mesmerizing probably would give Steve Vai's FOR THE LOVE OF GOD a heading of amazing
BUT
I would give Estas Tonne THE SONG OF THE GOLDEN DRAGON a heading of speechless.
I stumbled onto Estas Tonne just recently.
