Winston sure looked like a Jets QB tonight.

Is Orton retiring that be a blow? Spikes and Hughes are also free agents. Regardless, I think Miami is clearly a better team, but the Jets aren't as far away as people think if they can find a QB. Great defensive line, decent receivers and TE and solid running backs. They have a mountain of cap room. Of course getting a QB is the hardest thing in football. Orton sucks but he's far better than anyone else they had on the roster. Even an Orton-level quarterback is not always readily available. As for the Jets, they have Eric Decker who is a decent #2 receiver albeit a bit prone to drops, but I don't see much else in the way of WR/TE talent there, and with that awful secondary the defense is going to collapse without Rex, despite their terrifyingly good D-Line.

I wouldn't put much weight into what anyone says immediately after a crushing loss like that, never mind a college kid. Kind of surprised someone even asked him that. There's also the "what was he supposed to say?" issue.

That falls into the category of "bare assertion" for me-- there's no analysis of why that escrow would be any sort of burden for the Patriots.

I was only pointing out from a trusted source (Reiss is up there with Speier for me in terms of the best beat writers in the city) that a benefit here is to improve the cash flow.
I don't know - nor, really, care - whether this was actually a "burden." Just pointing out that it's likely at least one reason why they did it.

I love Mike Reiss but this is obviously outside his area of expertise, he's going by what he's been fed.

It wouldn't be all that bad. One bad throw aside, he looked like this year's RGIII to Mariota's Andrew Luck and that fumble was gloriously goofy. His INT rate is a giant red herring and his off the field problems might make him not worthy of a shot. When he's on, he's very good, but that was also the case with Geno Smith and he fell out of the first round in a year with pretty much no other QB and without the baggage.

Having watched Winston a good amount (fiancee is an FSU alum, so adopted them somewhat in the transaction), I'm dubious of how good of a pro he'll be unless he grows up. Even before last night, I wasn't a fan of his in-game composure - yeah, he'd look great during those second-half comebacks, but dear god was he awful in first halves this season - and it's clear from his off-field issues, even excluding the alleged assault (the crab legs theft, the "f- her right in the p-" thing), that there's immaturity there. Now, quite possible that happens, but I'm not sure I want to gamble a pick at the top of the first round on that happening. Could just be me.

Hey, if anyone wants to know whether drafting a talented but immature quarterback is a good idea, they could just ask Mike Pettine what he thinks...

Harvin, Amaro and I like Kerley as a 3... Those guys aren't bad if they had a good QB. Amaro started poorly, but greatly improved and looks like a solid TE. The corners need a complete overhaul, but they have a crap ton of cap room to do that. I guess the point with Orton is they aren't going anywhere with him so losing him can't be that bad.

Hey, if anyone wants to know whether drafting a talented but immature quarterback is a good idea, they could just ask Mike Pettine what he thinks... To be completely fair, Manziel was never talented or anything close to that for pro level. He just never had it, he was a glorified Tim Tebow in that he was a college QB and that's it. Winston has the tools for greatness, but like Chris said he'll nave make it as well unless he grows up as a player and as the not all that great human being he is now. I'd never bet on either with a top pick, but hey what is a sport without terrible franchises?

Winston and the Jets deserve each other. Watching his post Rose Bowl interview was telling as he basically said that FSU was a few bad plays away from making a game of it with Oregon. Of course, most of those bad plays were by Winston who obviously was nOt seeing eye to eye with the head coach and offensive coordinator based on some of gap heated discussions on the sidelines. You add his poor decision making off the field and Winston has bust written all over him.

The two fumbles by Cook were huge, and then Winston's gaffe kind of broke it open. Also, his wideouts dropped a few catchable balls. I also generally agree with his point. If those key turnovers don't happen, the complexion of the game is completely different. Oregon just got so much momentum they couldn't be stopped.

Because of Baltimore beating Pittsburgh I think that means they automatically go to New England next week leaving the winner of Cin/Ind to go to Denver.

The New England defense will shut them down. I can't wait to see how they do with playoff refs.

The New England defense will shut them down. I can't wait to see how they do with playoff refs. I hate to say it but the refs were pretty easy on Baltimore. They went from "that was a legal version of a helmet to helmet" to "they MAY have got away with a facemask there" on back to back plays.

And that's why you don't bet on the Lions!
Edit: How large must have been the check Jerry signed for the refs on that PI no call? Pete Morelli should be in jail, I've never seen something so ridiculous.

And that's why you don't bet on the Lions! Twitter explains why you don't bet on the Lions: Alex Kirby @alexjkirby · 14 minutes ago Complain all you want about the flag, but you had 4th and 1 on the Dallas side of the 50 and didn't go for it. Alok Pattani @alokpattaniespn · 5 minutes ago If DAL fails on either of those 4th downs, Garrett prob gets crushed postgame. Caldwell should face ?s on not going on 4th-&-1 from DAL 46.
