This all sounds like last stage negotiations with Moncada and the Yankees, with the leaks from the Yankees about their limits ... of course, it could be just that the Yankees leak like a sieve, and the Sox don't, but it sure sounds like the Yankees are closing in.

I agree, sadly. The fact that he's already signing also makes me think someone blew away the competition.

It sure seems like Moncada's landing place is going to be the Yankees. I don't believe they are reluctant to spend the money if they think he is all that is supposed to be. How much do the Yankees get for their broadcast rights? The amount he will cost is not a big deal. I think the sox might get him I think you're looking at this through Red Sox colored glasses. You also thought the Sox were going to bring back Lester too, and the Red Sox' offer was woefully short. Money talks in this game and the Yanks will spend what it takes to get Moncada.

Heh, heh... Well we'll see if that cuts any ice, but it's probably better than having Yongervis Solarte bend your ear.

TAMPA — Yoan Moncada likely will sign with the team that offers the most money. However, there is a catch to landing the 19-year-old, switch-hitting Cuban second baseman: Carlos Mesa. According to people with knowledge of the situation, Moncada wants his future team to sign his mentor, a 27-year-old outfielder who played in Cuba for two years as a teenager, was inactive for three seasons, spent three years in the lower levels of the Pirates system and last season worked for Camden (Independent League). “You might have to keep [Mesa] around to help him,’’ a source said. When Moncada was declared a free agent by MLB, there was speculation he could command as much as $50 million to sign. That appears to have drastically been reduced, with several baseball decision-makers believing it will be closer to $20 million.
Also important.

If his price really did drop $30 million (I doubt it), I'd sign pretty much anyone he asked me to sign in order to get him.

The price has neither dropped nor risen, only the speculation of the price fluctuates. I'm pretty sure the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers and whoever, determine what they feel he's worth, decide if they can fit it into their economic models then make offers accordingly. They likely have a range, if they feel there will be competition they will likely go to near the top of their range, if not nearer the bottom.
Keep in mind that $80m present value dollars means that to break even, Moncada will need to average about 2.5 WAR above and beyond his salary for the entire 6 control years just to break even.
For reference, Kris Bryant, the #1 prospect in baseball, is projected (Steamers) at 16 WAR for his control years.
I'm using present value because of the limitations on bonus payments (maximum deferral 3 years even spread, and the 50% tax is payable 100% this year.

Maybe the the secret workouts are only to determine if the Yankees will decide to beat the Red Sox offer. See, that's more speculation.

Doesn't make us right, but it makes the most sense. It's better than saying I'm a Sox fan so that means the Sox will wind up with Moncada. I'd be absolutely thrilled if the Sox went out and got Moncada, and maybe that happens and we're all celebrating today, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Yankees have a more glaring need, a very recent game plan of spending big on international talent to improve their comparative limited minor league talent base, and a history of doing whatever it takes to get a guy they really, really want. Is is speculation? Of course it is. Everything is speculation until the guys actually signs. I personally felt the Sox would wind up signing Sandoval, not signing Lester, and I felt they had a great shot at signing Castillo. Those were three instances I speculated correctly. That goes against the other 500 million times I didn't speculate correctly of course.

I'm gonna qualify this based on the current press and say it's more the latter, that the Yankees leak like a sieve, and the Sox don't. If the Sox were out or thought they were, there would be some stories this morning in friendly press contacts about how the Sox were never that in on him, along with some justifications on why. May still happen, but it seems to be the opposite right now, with increasing buzz that the Sox are all in. Yankees still the favorites, but we'll see today, hopefully.

My long distance 'assessment' is the highlighted. I think that the ink is drying....but then, I am a pessimist.

$30M is perfect in my view. Obviously enough to win, not so much to suck out future surplus value (the calculations start getting hairy when you account for 3-4 arb years). I'm sold. Hope report is true.
