The best part about the Moncada situation is the 5 million dollars that separated the Yankees bid from the Red Sox is the same amount of money they're spending on Stephen Drew this year!

Thank you Jon Lester. You either pay for past performance or for future performance.
There's risk in both, but 62<155

So who is the first reporter to bitch about it? I'm sure Cafardo and CHB had two articles pre-written to criticize the move no matter the result.

So who is the first reporter to bitch about it? I'm sure Cafardo and CHB had two articles pre-written to criticize the move no matter the result. Well they could point out that the Red Sox are creating a future problem. They have too many of these darn kids that are coming up at 21 or 22 years old and will be free agents by the time they're in their prime at age 27, ready for the Yankees to pluck since these could be guys (Bogaerts, Betts, Moncada) who could command $200 million deals if they pan out, because we know the Yanks aren't interested in them when they're young. That could be something to look forward to reading about from them.

OK, I can't remember the last time I went to NYYfans to soak up some schadenfreude, but I had some time this morning, and the Moncada thread's a doozy ... best comment so far: "Maybe Hal would've sold Babe Ruth to the Red Sox."

@espnnyyankees: To be clear, it's obvious Cashman wanted Moncada but it seems like he couldn't get Hal to go any higher

Remember when the Sox were going to be neglected and suffer because of J. Henry's soccer team?
I do give credit to Ben, but lots and lots of credit to ownership on this one.

My god, Cherington is a terrific GM.
Also, the Yankees org has become a dumpster fire, and Iove it.

Shocked! For as long as free agency has existed I cannot remember outbidding the Yanks for anyone they truly wanted (resulting in "learned helplessness")..we did snatch Mike Torrez from them. They even took Luis Tiant from us at the end of his career (Bowie Kuhn was sickened). I cursed the sox fate of having the uber wealthy Yawkey die just on the eve of free agency- the "curse" would otherwise have ended long ago. Then decades of losing every bidding war with them- El Duque, etc. This is wonderful!

We were all made out to believe we lost this guy to the Yanks or LA. I would love to see how the posting works. It's funny how close the bidding is. The Sox musta knew to win they would have to go 30. I wonder if the agent tells them . How cool would it be if they documented the whole process of this kid finally signing with a team?

Like this move. Also if you haven't seen Cashman's statement on this: Cashman: "You only have so much money to spend. We have massive financial commitments and when you make those you have to live with them.'' (Translation: "Screw you. We're buying Price and Zimmerman next year. And Upton. So there.") Or they're getting ready to sell. This. The other siblings will only live so long. They probably want the family to cash out. "I'll take my $500 mil now, please."

Yep, this is pretty much all John Henry. Every GM in the league would sign Moncada if their owner let him. Sure, good on ownership, but it's the application of available resources that's the real job of the GM ... and the Sox/Cherington set this up by not re-signing Ellsbury or Lester, not panic-signing Scherzer or Shields, etc, etc. The A-Rod comparison's fun, but even a better one is just looking at the $9 million difference between the Sox cost and what the Yankees were willing to do. It's less than half of what Sabathia and Teixiera will make this year, about 60% of what Carlos Beltran is going to make, the same as Drew+Capuano ...
