OK, I can't remember the last time I went to NYYfans to soak up some schadenfreude, but I had some time this morning, and the Moncada thread's a doozy ... best comment so far: "Maybe Hal would've sold Babe Ruth to the Red Sox." Ha! This one is good too: Pretty broad and incorrect tweet. From what I understand. $30M in taxes for passing allotment $15M Moncada $15M Cuba

I suppose it's also possible that they start him out in Greenville when it's super cold up north.

Does Moncada play 3B or 2B in our system? because according to the projected lineups he'd be booting the following people.
Greenville - Doubon/Devers Lowell - Acosta/Chavis Salem - Rijo/Witte
From a talent perspective it would look like Witte would be the guy who is expendable position wise, but would that be too aggressive moving him to high A??? It would also open up a path in Portland for later in the year and/or 2016 too if he was at 3rd.

I think it will depend on how he looks in spring trainning, if he looks rusty or if he looks ready. If he is ready I think Salem is the likely place they send him. If he looks like he needs time maybe he goes to Greenville. One of the other guys stays back in extended and go to Greenville once Moncada is ready to move on.
But really let's get him in the system first then go from there.

I'd send hin to the Bronx first in that bullet-proof glass car the Pope uses, drive him over to Queens and Manhattan. Then down to Salem.

Bring him to Greenville and move Doubon to SS

I'd be very surprised if he didn't start in Salem with a potentially quick move to Portland.

Bring him to Greenville and move Doubon to SS Then where does Javier Guerra play? I guess Lowell is a possibility, but I think he earned a full season assignment and is more a promising short stop than Doubon is.

Moncada's signing bonus total cost would probably surpass what we paid to every minor leaguer in our system. If they sign him they are going to put him at the whatever position or level they think he is best suited for, regardless of that teams roster.
EditZ: Wow, I've been inactive in following baseball since I took my new job, but I missed the part that WE SIGNING MONCADA, and for a lot less than I thought it would take. Awesome.

I completely agree, I'm just pondering where that may be and what implications that could have on other guys.

I don't watch ESPN these days to listen to the speculation, but do we have a consensus of how his name is pronounced?
I've sounded it out as Yo-Anne Mawn-Cah-Dah. But I could also see there being some hard 'A' sounds, or silent 'Y's. Any idea?

So does Moncada immediately leapfrog Swihart as our best prospect?

Joel Sherman ?@joelsherman1 9s10 seconds ago Tampa, FL Now hear it was #redsox #brewers #Yankees for Moncada. #Dodgers would have gone to $35M if waited until July 2 to sign Wait, what? Why did the Dodgers need him to wait? Does he mean Cubs?

Yeah, that makes no sense. I guess if teams didn't have to take the 2 year penalty, it may have gone that high. This was interesting:

Why did the Dodgers need him to wait? Does he mean Cubs? Because the Dodgers are rumored to have multiple deals in place for J2 prospects. They can't reneg on those "deals" so they needed to wait.

Wait, what? Why did the Dodgers need him to wait? Does he mean Cubs? Cause they want to sign some top July 2 guys too. Here is a tweet from McDaniels: @kileymcd: During my July 2 research, Dodgers were rumored to have a multi-million dollar deal, which seemed weird w/Moncada rumors. Now it doesn't.

Fantastic move by Cherington. I wonder if there are any chairs being thrown in Cashman's office right now.

Am I missing something or is this totally wrong? I realize having to pay the tax up front makes somewhat of a difference but ultimately the Red Sox don't care where the money goes. They valued Moncada at 63m and if he was a free agent that's roughly what they would have offered him. Thats essentially correct, at least from the Red Sox perspective, although I suppose it could have gone higher if not for the additional penalties for going over the international spending cap. The Red Sox were already over, so it didn't concern them at this point, but any other team (except the yankees) would have also had to have been handcuffed in international signings for the next 2 years, which may have discouraged higher bids.

Does Moncada play 3B
Several factors in play. Does X become solid at SS, Papi (how much longer), and Dustin's continued production. People may move around for various reasons but I'm thinking 3b long term.
