Interesting that they think he's AA bound this year. I was favoring A+ personally. On the questions about his approach: I'm not worried because there may not be a better organization in baseball when it comes to developing great hitting approaches than the Red Sox. Cuba, Guatemala, Florida, Maine in April. Which one of these doesn't belong ? I viewed the article as interesting in that they predict league average at AA at age 20. That doesn't happen very often. Also the approach is currently only a little below league average, I'm with you there, highly unlikely that doesn't improve assuming reasonable character. Given his start date am wondering if they hold him in extended spring training for a few weeks to avoid the special level of hell that is the Eastern League in early april

It'll be interesting to see where he goes on MLB's prospect watch list (even though their rankings are the biggest crapshoot IMO). Ian Browne ?@ianmbrowne MLB.com ranks Moncada ninth among all prospects.

Interesting insight into the entire signing process. A must read. www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/rob-bradford/2015/03/13/story-behind-how-yoan-moncada-landed-red-sox Pushing tax returns aside, Hastings turned his attention to negotiations with the team he felt fit Moncada best, the Red Sox. He called Romero, who then looped in Cherington. By late morning the request had been made: would Boston be willing to up its offer to $30 million?
The Red Sox weren't going to get in a bidding war with the Yankees, Dodgers, or anyone else. And, in this case, they didn't have to. Following their private workout with Moncada at JetBlue Park, baseball operations had presented their case to ownership for a healthy allocation of money for pursuit of the switch hitter. Seven separate scouting reports had uncharacteristically yielded a unanimously positive view of the player. The path of evaluation was thorough and long. There was very little intelligence in terms of what other teams were willing to invest -- Hastings held such information close to the vest -- but the Sox had already determined a willingness to reach the $30 million range.
Cherington started contacting the ownership group one by one in order to get the go-ahead to meet Hastings' request. There was one problem: principal owner John Henry was busy visiting the pits at the Daytona 500, where his Roush Fenway Racing Team was preparing for its big day.
Finally, the message was relayed through Henry's wife, Linda Pizzuti, who managed to text the financial request to her husband. He texted back not only to meet the $30 million asking price, but "go to 31." (Another $500,000 was later added.)

That Bradford story is long, but it's a must read.

Yankee fans are going to commit Harry Carray???
or are they going to commit Seppuku after they finish 81-81 this year and Moncada is BA's #1 prospect by mid season?

"go to 31" should be the new Sox battle cry.

selfishly I'm happy to see he'll spend some time in Greenville as I figure to get there about 5-6 times this yr and catch them on the road in Asheville
I figured he'd start in Salem with a mid season promotion to Portland if deemed worthy, this does slow his assent to Boston though no? Under my scenario I thought he might even get a Sept call up or at least a cup of coffee at Pawtucket

Kinda surprised by this. The Padres thought he was advanced enough to attend big league camp this year with a chance to win a spot on their team.

I'd play him at second too. We might want to replace Pedey in two years if his no so recent trends continue... Kidding not kidding...

Once he shows he has the skills, I have no doubt he'll move very fast. The team has had no qualms about rocketing players through the system. I'd bet on playing time in Salem, and maybe even Portland if he shows he's ready. Realize he's just a kid, that he won't even turn 20 till the end of May. Patience, everyone.

Starting in Greenville is just to get him acclimated as he hasn't played Baseball in a while. Both Xander and Mookie were in Greenville and less than a year and a half later were in the big leagues. So yes if he's good he'll move quickly.

Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 4m4 minutes ago Air of mystery around Moncada. His camp deflected question on how or why he was allowed to leave Cuba or whether he has family in the US

Go back to the posts I made earlier. There are new relations between the US and Cuba, and I have no doubt those underlie the tacit agreement that allowed Moncada into the States. It's part of a larger thaw that was announced after those initial questions were asked.
Hard to know what details Abraham is looking for. Maybe he should visit the State Department? I don't blame "his camp" a bit for trying to keep the media dogs away from the family. They may not be ready for there 15 minutes of fame just yet.

Kinda surprised by this. The Padres thought he was advanced enough to attend big league camp this year with a chance to win a spot on their team. If Moncada was to win a spot on the Red Sox he would have to jump Pedroia and Betts (and Holt and Weeks), on the Padres he'd have to beat out Jedd Gyorko. One of these scenarios is more plausible than the other.
