For something to be "unusual" wouldn't there have to be many examples of similar situations in the past? Moncada's case arguably unique.

Thx for reminding me to finally unfollow him in Twitter. Did the same last night. I used to like him, but he's acting like a baby, finding reasons to be overreacting and snarky negative about EVERYTHING. Edes was matching him tweet for tweet.

I don't think the plan would be for Moncada to stay in Greenville for long, which I think is why he's been in Extended for so long. Disrupting Guerra and Dubon's at-bats for a month while Moncada passes through won't kill them. Dubon has been fine, but I did not see a player who should be moved up a level. He and Guerra should spend the year in Greenville. Do you think Moncada spends the bulk of his time in Salem?

I believe it will depend on how quickly he dispenses with A level pitching, as Chris mentions. If he starts fast and stays at a high level, it's easy to imagine just a short stay in Greenville, and the bulk of the season at A+. He's seen a lot of pitching, both Cuban and at the international level. He's not the average newcomer and he may make life difficult for opposing pitchers.

I know this is the wrong thread to get too deep into this, but has Moncada really seen that much pitching? I don't think he's really played that many innings of organized ball, and also not at that high of a level. I think he'll be challenged quite a bit at Salem, and wonder if the same won't be true at Greenville, especially given how long it's been for him.

I'd imagine he's probably facing low A-level pitching or close to it daily in XST.

He's spent a couple years in Serie Nacional, which has been equated to about High A, although with much greater variance of skill level. My thought was the whole point of putting him in Greenville was to acclimate him to U.S. affiliated ball. They're doing a lot more acclimation in XST than I'd thought, and my guess is that it's because they don't want him in Greenville for long.

I don't buy the whole "it's been a while for him" playing baseball. I used to play basketball and stopped for about 3 years. When I got my current job & found out we had a full court gym, it didn't take me long (less than a month) to get up to my level of dominance, vs. better competition than I've ever faced. It's apples and oranges but if you can play you can play. It's almost like riding a bike.

Rusney Castillo was also out of organized baseball for a long time, and he was in a line-up playing ball MUCH quicker. Most of us here thought Moncada would join Greenville a month ago. I can't actually understand why he isn't facing "real" competition by now. He has been at "extended" Spring Training for at least 7 weeks now. For me it is hard to see why he isn't playing everyday and working his way through whatever new experiences he comes face to face with.

I am in no hurry to bring him up. I just want him to taste success at first, and then challenge him. I would expect him to start at Greenville or lower.

Much different. 2) I'd be more inclined to value this anecdote if you were playing in the NBA. Your office pick-up game isn't professional baseball. (Nothing personal.) It's also not just about baseball. He's learning a new language and culture, both socially and on the field. As I've said, I think he's been in XST so long because they're planning on making any stay in Greenville, if there is one (good point made above about a potential change of plans, which could certainly happen), very short. If you're planning on strapping a rocket to him, then you better make sure he's ready for it. There is no reason to worry. If he gets a significant number of at-bats in Salem this year, he's still on course.

There's only two weeks until the Salem Sox are in Frederick, MD, so let's get him up to Salem asap ... SoxProspects South would turn out in force for those games, I'm sure.

Midweek games = no dice for first-year attorney who would need to leave work at like 2 to beat the traffic and just got extra time off to go on his honeymoon. (Also missing a Sea Dogs weekend series in Bowie because my wife decided to visit that weekend, but hey, at least it's just Portland?)

He's not only practicing, he's also having english classes and getting acclimated to a new culture. I know that. I acknowledge that. But lets all chip in and buy him a Rosetta Stone course. He can take that on the road with him. It is a very practical gift. By the way, how many ways can you say " give me a Big Mac?? Their daily meal allowance is not much. I know I'm being impatient, but I want to open up this site every morning and see what Yoan did last night!

Yeah lets hope he does gets used to surf and turf. That special sauce (in the Big Mac) will probably put on too much bad weight.

But let's not brush this over as all other MiLB teams have spanish speaking players who could help him get acclimated to the culture. Also, and this is my stupid point of the day, Ted Williams came back after not playing for three years. Look up his stats his first year back. He had a career average year. Again, not the same thing but if you can play, you can play. It doesn't matter how long you've been out or what planet you're from.
