Is anyone else troubled by the fact that they are still holding him out a couple of days, rather than playing him right now? Greenville is away on a road trip, back tomorrow. So, no. Pretty sure Steve was joking and refering to Abrahams' note on the Globe the other day.

That's before he signed.
And this was in spring training.

The left-handed swing is a thing of beauty, and the right side isn't bad either. I know there are questions about what level his time in Cuba should be equated to now that he's stateside, but from looking at the leverage he develops from that left side, I'd say this guy has seen a bit of pitching. The way he shifts his weight when he loads up, and his ability to repeat that on each cut, tells me that he's been working on this for a long time, even if he is only 19. As scouts have mentioned, he also looks to have the potential to substantial power given the way he can get under the ball.
Obviously, doing it in batting practice is not the same as game action. It's still a very good predictor of his ability to rise in the system, I believe.

I'm curious to see how quickly the Sox will push him up the ladder... Obviously he will need prove at each level he can handle the pitching and put up the stats that he needs to. If he can destroy single A and A+ I'd think that he could potentially get to AA by the end of the regular season...with the potential to have a cup of coffee in the AAA playoffs. I don't want to push the hype meeter..but I'm so excited for this it's not even funny! I would make the drive today to Greenville if I didn't have to work. If he gets to Salem soon, I will have a better opportunity considering I live in VA

Very much looking forward to this. Thanks for the heads up. Hope the hype is hyperbole. Like to see this kid advance. My sources say he has a Mookie skill set.

Very different player from Mookie, as you can read about in our Scouting Scratch on him: news.soxprospects.com/2015/03/scouting-scratch-yoan-moncada.html, as well as his scouting report on his player page.

Not sure how this write up is that different from Betts. My source watched Moncada's BP and observed that the only player in the system to match his (Yoan's) bat speed was Betts (he also mentioned Brentz and Castillo as having plus bat speed). He also mentioned that they were both fast, possibly with an edge to Betts. This and their good glove work portends the ability to play positions, other than SS, in Moncada's case, and 2B, in Betts' case. Arm strength is YTBD. Betts had a plus arm for a 2Bman and a mediocre arm for a CFer. Not sure how Moncada's arm translates Power comparisons are too early to draw IMO. We've seen Betts hit some lasers out of the major league ball parks.... we've yet to seen Moncada get the ball out of the infield in Greenville. The consistency of the Betts/Moncada skill set comparison is that they are both average or above average when comparing the 5 tools. Together they are the only two young recent Red Sox prospects that this can be said about. I am really looking forward to seeing Moncada in person sometime this Summer.

Moncada is not a good fielder at second base right now, for one thing (the fact that he's made 3 errors in two games backs up what we saw in camp). As for the arm, Moncada's is plus and is probably a little better than Betts's is.
Moncada projects to hit for a lot more power than Mookie does - he's got plus raw while Mookie has, at best, slightly above-average game power and maybe above-average raw, particularly when you consider his size.
Speaking of which, it's also a completely different body type - Moncada is bigger, thicker, more muscular, and much taller, while Betts is smaller and more lithe. Moncada is also a switch hitter who's better from the left side while Betts hits from the right side only.
So they're similar in that they have plus batspeed, are naturally 2B in the lower minors, and possess plus speed, but there's not a whole lot of similarity beyond that. They're closer in comparison than say, David Ortiz and Mookie Betts, but I don't think of them as possessing the same toolset at all.

Moncada probably has the skills to play second base, but the technique isn't very good. Backhanding balls to one side or the other is a fundamental no no when it comes to basics. That's not something he should be doing on everyday ground balls. Lots for him to work on.

@alexspeier: Red Sox minors injury updates: Moncada (hamstring) day to day; no DL yet. Margot (intercostal) to play extended ST games within about a week

A lot of Sox prospect talk on the most recent BA podcast, but Josh Norris (I think?) in particular raves about Moncada, who he saw in person for his debut. Badler mentions that Buxton might be the only prospect in baseball who grades out better just on pure tools.

Strange write up on Devers in the linked article. The first paragraph seems out of place with the following paragraphs.

Thoughts? Anyone who wants to bet against a 19 year old in A ball who hasn't played in over a year should be ready to not complain when they are eating crow. 48 at bats for the rusty 19 year old will not define him.
