One rainout complete in the Eduardo, pray for rain, pray for rain, pray for rain, pray for rain proposed rotation. Buchholz first 2 starts: 7.84 ERA, 4.16 FIP, 3.60 xFIP, 3.09 SIERA Buchholz next 4 starts: 5.14 ERA, 2.33 FIP, 2.99 xFIP, 2.92 SIERA Buchholz last 4 starts: 2.48 ERA, 3.20 FIP, 3.32 xFIP, 3.47 SIERA Is there a reason that you'd consider his season-so-far ERA more predictive than his FIP of 3.06, xFIP of 3.15 or SIERA of 3.19? Miley first 4 starts: 8.62 ERA, 4.75 FIP, 5.90 xFIP, 5.85 SIERA Miley last 6 starts: 3.49 ERA, 3.27 FIP, 4.28 xFIP, 4.40 SIERA It may be fair to give him a mulligan for those first 4 starts, 3 of which were with Leon behind the plate. 6 starts with Leon: 6.59 ERA, 4.17 FIP, 5.83 xFIP, 5.89 SIERA 3 starts with Swihart: 4.05 ERA, 2.89 FIP, 3.07 xFIP, 3.13 SIERA. Basically, the above splits seem to be entirely from having Leon catch 3 out of 4 games, and then 3 out of 6. Although the ERAs were dramatically different in his first 3 Leon starts from his second 3 (13.50 vs. 2.89) and the FIPs a bit (5.10 to 3.68), his xFIP went from 6.33 to 5.57 and his SIERA from 6.09 to 5.76. One way to help fix the Sox would be to make Swihart his primary catcher.

Well it was mostly a joke; I'm fine with the rotation on the whole and think it'll be league average or better by year end.
I want to live in one of the alternate universes where Vazquez doesn't miss the season.

I got screwed by the rainout. Coming to to town to watch some games Wednesday-Saturday. Just read that Rodriguez is now going to pitch the early Wednesday game.

“@dan_Shaughnessy: John Henry tells Globe’s Alex Speier he will address media at Fenway today/tonight.” ooh. Probably just to reiterate the plan and sticking with JF/BC.

JH is smarter than to just cut the legs out from underneath his manager or GM publicly. He's not going to say anything of substance. He'll say the results are unacceptable, but we knew that.

Outstanding. I think his biggest deterrent has been a pretty short track record. But the stuff and outstanding control would point to great things. I would say that he's behind Giolito as well. Giolito is a freak, only injury will stop him it seems.

Here's a caveat: Chris Mitchell seems like a nice guy, but KATOH (the minors-to-majors projection system that he cites for the third best pitching prospect comment) has major, major issues.

In 93.1 innings at three levels, he walked 17 batters.

Kiley also had him as the 8th pitching prospect overall, and only ranked 3 pitchers in a higher tier. I agree, don't buy anything into the KATOH projection, but it's clear he is on the uptick.

I'm not saying it applies to these two specifically, but everyone now being all gaga about Rodriguez and slightly down on Owens shows why retroactively talking about "selling high" is so much easier said then done. As much as I like Rodriguez, it is very possible that we're in a five-day stretch of his value being the highest it will ever be.

Surprised they are going with Leon tonight since you gotta think he'll catch tomorrow. Although they do seem to stick to a system of not having they same guy catch a day game, following a night game and you would assume Swihart will be E-Rod's personal catcher for the time being.

I kept my mouth shut when there was early chatter on this board that the Sox had no pitching prospects to speak of, and that Rodriguez might be a bottom of the rotation guy at best. For now I'll just say that this is a 22 year old with dynamite stuff he can actually command.
We really have no idea how good he might eventually be, so we might hold off on hard and fast projections. There isn't an unlimited supply of crow for all of us to chow down on.

I would like to see Swihart here as well. He had the day off yesterday, and has been making hard contact more frequently of late. No way he catches both games tomorrow.

Leon is starting because he's become Buchholz's personal catcher. And this seems to be the answer to just about every "why is catcher X catching today?" question. It's also why platooning catchers is impossible.

It's also why platooning catchers is impossible. It's also a decision made because of superstition and SSS, but it happens on almost every team. Swihart has been a better framer and capable game caller it seems.

I saw him pitch live last year after the trade and I believe I declared here afterwards that he was the future of rock and roll best argument I've seen for the Sox having an actual #2 or better anywhere above A-Ball, FWIW. Sometimes you gotta put the neck on the chopping block. Here's hoping the axe stays dusty on this one.
