The continued inability of the Red Sox pitching staff to field their position is so incredibly frustrating. At some level, it represents a failing by the coaching staff to adequately prepare their players. Throwing to bases should not be this difficult. How the heck is that on the coaching staff? It's up to each player to be able to do their job. It's MLB, not Legion Ball! I try not to be unreasonably harsh on the coaching staff. But this isn't a couple players struggling with something that they just don't have the tools or skills for. This is just about every single starting pitcher on the roster over almost a decade who have struggled with a rather fundamental skill that they should be able to easily grasp with enough practice. This coaching staff (and it goes back to Tito, though Farrell was the pitching coach at the time) has, for a sustained period of time, not placed enough emphasis on having pitchers field their position, which includes holding runners on, making throws to bases, backing plays up, and so on. These are really basic, fundamental things that should not be an issue if the pitchers focus on it and do enough fielding drill reps in Spring Training and throughout the year. But Farrell (both as pitching coach and as manager) has generally expressed an attitude that pitchers should focus on pitching rather than fielding the position. This is a calculated decision, and one that serves the organization poorly.

Sandoval is OPSing a whopping .395 in his last 20.
The $20 million dollar man is probably our biggest issue right now.

Middlebrooks is putting up better numbers then him, in San Diego.

Whatever, it's still way too SSS. Yes, we get it. Anything but a seasons worth of stats is a SSS. But this is a forum to discuss things. We can use SSS to discuss the effects certain players are having on our team in the short term.

Wow. Middlebrooks is doing better than Sandoval with a .266 BABIP, let alone defensively where he has been much better. Classic hahah.

It is absolutely crazy to think Hanley once stole 50 bases in 1 year.
He is quite possibly the worst baserunner I've seen on the Red Sox since Manny left.

Sandoval in April: 9.1% BB, 15.9% K, .361 BABIP, .130 ISO Sandoval in May: 3.2% BB, 14.7% K, .205 BABIP, .111 ISO
OK, let's have a "discussion" here. Tell me why I should think this is anything but bad luck?

Hah this team is just funny. But it actually looks like Hanley's knees are killing him when he runs.

So not only does Hanley's mistake cost them a run, but then Napoli runs into an out by a mile.
Guess they figured Panda sucks so its not even worth giving him a shot.

Oh my god, that was the worst decision to try and score that I've ever seen. What the **** was Butterfield thinking there?

Oh my god, that was the worst decision to try and score that I've ever seen. What the **** was Butterfield thinking there? He was probably thinking the runner started on 2nd base, which was what the situation should have been...

Hah this team is just funny. But it actually looks like Hanley's knees are killing him when he runs. And we now send slow runners from first on a single? The whole coaching staff is dingy it appears.
