“@theryanparker: Tonya Carpenter, the fan severely hurt by a broken bat June 5 at Fenway, has been released from the hospital, her family says.”

LOL, and the team that shall not be named is leading the division with old guys, pitchers with broken bodies ,and no farm system. I passed out from the 2013 victory party and woke up in Red Sox Nation Hell. Imagine how dire it would be had we not won in 2013 It would be like the baseball bat scene in The Untouchables except the names screamed out by Capone/Henry/all the fans would be Farrell, Cherrington and Lucchino. So, pretty much the same that's probably happening on talk radio right now but with even fewer ticket sales.

6/12 vs. TOR: Pedroia 2B, Holt LF, Bogaerts SS, Ortiz DH, Napoli 1B, Sandoval 3B, Betts CF, Swihart C, Castillo RF, Kelly RHP
Has Farrell finally figured out that the 3-hole is for the 5th best hitter on the team? I'm guessing no...

Michael Silverman @mikesilvermanbb 5s6 seconds ago Heath Hembree just arrived in clubhouse. Not sure what corresponding move is. Yet.

Breslow DFA could reasonably be on there too. In fact, I'd say that's more likely than Bianchi. I wish... Pretty sure Farrell thinks he needs to have two LHP in the bullpen, though. Would have been Ross instead of Hembree coming up if this was the move.

“@alexspeier: Breslow is going on paternity leave. Hence, Hembree callup.”

Welp, didn't guess that one...
Anyway, that does make it somewhat surprising that it wasn't Ross called up, not that either Ross or Breslow actually have the splits to make them lefty specialists... FO saving Farrell from himself?
Layne has only faced 2 batters in the last 4 days so that shouldn't be an issue at least.

I said along with all the other old Red Sox fans that I can die happy a few weeks later, no matter what the Red Sox do ever again. Agreed. And 2013 was a gift. This is just frustrating, in part because it's just bad baseball and in part because it feels like the same error twice (2014, watch, rinse, repeat).

Do you enjoy watching overpaid mediocre baseball players performing? I love the playing of the game of baseball. When I can watch it I look at all the little things that go on that make it such a complex game. I am happier when the Sox win, but as long as there is another game coming I'm not despondent when they lose. And I probably started following the Sox long before you were born when the team truly was mediocre, year after year, and with management that made the current gang look like geniuses. Danr, then I'm a contemporary of yours. My first recollection of paying any attention to Major League Baseball was the 7th game of the 1955 World Series, and I first started following the Sox with any interest during The Kid's miracle season in 1957. Been paying attention ever since. I've been to relatively few MLB games live since the mid-90's. I was soured by the strike and the greed on all sides. Would much rather go to minor league games and coach my son's -- now grandson's -- baseball team. Unfortunately, my grandson age 14, just finished his season, and since his team may be breaking up after this year as various members of the team go to various high schools and start playing school baseball, my coaching career could be over. All things come to an end.

To me this team was only a step towards the 2016 team. What concerns me is that at the current pace Ortiz is getting the 425 PA he needs for his option to vest while he's posting a sub .700 OPS at the DH position. Ortiz needs to sit.

All things come to an end. On my Facebook page today up popped a photo of one of my two nephews and his two sons at Camden Yards yesterday. (I started a trend and all my younger relatives are Sox fans). They live near Buffalo but are in Maryland this weekend because their traveling baseball team is playing at Cal Ripken stadium in Aberdeen. The two boys are baseball phenoms with one of them I am sure wanting to play for the Sox - and he may. It is a little too early yet to gauge his potential but I am told it could be quite good. I sure would have liked to have been in Baltimore with them. We moved from Maryland to Oregon two and a half years ago so that we could be here to see our grandchild born. My wife had cancer and died last year and now I am marooned here, close to my daughter and grandchild, which is nice, but really missing the East Coast. The only baseball in the entire Portland area is a low level minor league team off in a suburb on the other side of the city, and Seattle has the MLB and NESN games blacked out most of the time. But I grew up listening to baseball on the radio and it still is fun.

Xander looking real nice in the 3 spot with his 2 HRs, .100 ISO and .395 slg.

Cots lists service time down to the day, as measured from the start of the season. It's actually a really useful site for that purpose.

And I probably started following the Sox long before you were born when the team truly was mediocre, year after year, and with management that made the current gang look like geniuses. Given your Red Sox fan veteran status - I'm assuming going back to the dark days before the Impossible Dream - then I'm really, really glad that you've got to enjoy 3 Championships. If a person is 30 years old, they've probably started following the Sox sometime around 1995 or so meaning that you waited all of 9 years to see them win in it all, and are pretty used to the idea of Sox as Champions, but if you've followed the team for a long time (for me I go back to 1980 when it comes to following the Sox), and you witnessed 1986 Games 6 and 7 (not to mention 1978, Game 7 1975, etc, then I think perhaps you appreciate the Championships in a different sort of way. I started following the Sox in '62, when I was 8. I can remember the Dick Stuart days, and the winter I came home breathlessly on the bus from Hebrew School, two days a week, sure that the Sox had traded Stuart for someone great (oddly, I don't recall rushing to get the Boston Evening Globe each day, since that's where the news would be), and the day I did come home to learn he'd been traded even-up for ... Dennis Benett! Yes, in those days they could be crushing disappointment even when they weren't playing. I can remember when my junior high school changed its schedule to accommodate the '67 WS -- they shortened each of the 7 periods so that we were back in our homerooms in time for the first pitch of each day game, and piped the radio PBP over the school intercom. Of course, there was a gap during the bus ride home, and, again, I have no memory of getting home and watching the ends of the games, although I know I must have. And I have a 1986 Game 6 story that beggars belief, but it ends with me fleeing from my parent's den, which had been my childhood bedroom (!), and collapsing face down on the living room floor, where my fiance (future ex-wife and still best friend) comforted me, while my Dad just sat silent in his easy chair. He passed away on October 4, 2004, the day before the playoffs started; last conversation we ever had was about my conviction that this might finally be the year. So, yeah, very different experience for us old guys. At least these bad teams the last four years (and a month) have had a chance to be good, and have been perversely fascinating in their failure to be so.

Xander looking real nice in the 3 spot with his 2 HRs, .100 ISO and .395 slg. He's actually got the 3rd highest slg and wRC+ of anyone in the lineup tonight. Who would you like to put there instead? As much as we dump on Farrell it's hard to construct a legit lineup when most of your veterans and best hitters are severely underperforming.
