Having Hanley and Gomes playing both LF should be funny I think Pedroia would say, "not so funny."

I was curious and looked into Porcello's splits a little bit more. In the first time through the lineup, batters are triple slashing .216/.252/.353 But in the second time through the order, they're putting up a .313/.364/.505 Then it goes to a slightly more respectable .291/.344/.465 for the third time. His strikeout rate is also 3x higher when facing batters for the first time in a game.
I've never really looked at this stat much so I don't know how it compares to other pitchers and he's only got about 100 PA for each category, but that's pretty significant. I wonder if it's a pitch selection thing or if his stuff isn't great when hitters get to see more pitches. Guys like Kelly and Clay have the opposite problem.

If you find that a pitcher is better the 3rd time through the order than the 2nd time, then it's very safe to conclude that your sample size is too small.
(Note that I would normally not bother looking at MenOn/BasesEmpty splits in-season, but in this case they are absolutely in line with his career splits.)

OK, someone got on base. Should be an automatic hook for Porcello.

Mookie should have been pulled out of the game for that.

What's going on? Yes, it hit his hand rather than the bat... but aren't you supposed to try and get out of the way if you want to be awarded 1st base?

OK, someone got on base. Should be an automatic hook for Porcello. Hey, not bad Farrell, only off by three batters.

Arkansas eliminated by Canes. Hopefully that means Benintendi signs soon and starts in Lowell by next weekend.

The ninth hitter always has fewer at bats than the eighth batter and thus fewer opportunities to get on base. It makes no sense from a probability standpoint to put at ninth a better hitter than the eighth hitter. To amplify: Each batter in the batting order has approximately 17 fewer at bats over the course of a season than the batter preceding him. Thus, there is no such thing as a second leadoff batter. The ninth position will come to bat about 116 fewer times than the leadoff position, and about 17 fewer times than the 8th position. The idea is that you get more out of those fewer opportunities to get on base due to the better following hitters. Look, I'm sorry that there are mistakes in your book from the 60's, but that's been known and corrected since 10 years at least. You need to get over it. I am not aware of that. Please give me a source. However, my argument is based on numbers which cannot be refuted. The eighth batting position is going to get more at bats than the ninth. How can you argue with that? And then why would you put a better hitter ninth? It can't make sense.

I'm someone who has loved numbers since I was 3. What was a love for the numbers on the back of baseball cards became an obsession with sabermetrics and baseball statistics in general. I love the statistical analyses guys like mgoetze, FTHW, Eric, and the mods bring to this board. With that being said, I continue to disagree about bunting basically being a sin. I'm so pro sac-bunt. I don't care if it decreases the probability of winning by a slight bit. This offense sucks right now, and with Sandy Leon up with a runner on 1st and less than two outs, I'll take the sac-bunt EVERY SINGLE TIME. My god that double play was so unbelievably predictable. I hate the sac bunt with an MLB-caliber hitter at the plate. With Sandy Leon, who's maybe a high-A hitter, yeah, sure, sac bunt it up.

Big Papi nowhere near the 81 mph hanging slider from a LHP. He's cooked versus lefties.
Xander Bogaerts is a shining light this season, though.

If Bogaerts would start doing that more I wouldn't be mad.

If you're sick of this and want to see Moncada hit a rocket double in the RCF gap, @tommypro25 has video on Twitter

I can't recall a more frustrating team to watch. At least the pre-2004 teams would wait until the post-season to rip your heart out. This is like slamming your head into a wall on a nightly basis.
Why can't this team hit? Surely there MUST be something more than luck at play here.

Good for Mookie. He needed a follow up game like this.
