Ross looks like Ownens without any good pitches.

Watching Chase Headley play is just another reminder of what Boston could have done this past offseason. fWar of 1.9 to date and Zips and Steamer project an additional 1.2/1.3 for the remainder of the season for a slightly over 3 fWar player. And all that at a 4 yr 52 mil deal. Many on this site wanted Headley over Sandoval and to this point they were right to. And your method of forcing him to leave NY and sign with us would have been.....? $$$$$$

Perhaps not but he was a free agent and had they offered him 4 and 60 it would have still been a better deal than Sandoval's. It is a valid question as to if he wanted to leave NY or not.

If he turns down an extra $10m to re-sign in New York, so be it, but you make him make a hard choice or force the Yankees to match Boston's offer.

I'd give anything to see Uehara in with the game actually on the line. Just once. In the sixth inning? Nah. I don't think closers should be stuck to such rigid ninth-inning usage, but having a general idea of when to get warm, start stretching, etc, is one reason closers in the post-Eckersley era have posted such dominant stats. To have Uehara in the sixth he needs to be getting stretched in what, the fourth? Two on and one out and Miguel Cabrera up in the eighth, or even the seventh? Yeah, sure. But if the starter has to come out in the sixth you need a lot of outs from your relievers, so taking the closer so far out of order isn't going to do any good.

Great debut by Owens, even without considering the horrible strike zone and the hostile environment.

Owens didn't have great fastball command, but pitched wel through that. Certainly showed enough to keep him in the rotation injuries aside.

Other third basemen traded or signed this offseason: Josh Donaldson, Luis Valbuena, Hector Olivera, Jung-ho Kang. Other 3B who may have been available: Daniel Murphy, Aramis Ramirez, Juan Uribe.

I missed the first and fourth innings, but Owens's fastball command looked quite good to me, to be honest. Fewer fastballs that missed up in the zone compared to previous times I saw him.

Unreal. Bleep you Farrell. Yeah, he should brought Ross in to start the inning. That would have worked. Or, maybe Way Back Ogando. We have numerous 6th inning options.

Isn't the first part of your sentence not something that is particularly new? He has always had command issues, just a question of how consistent he can be in order to reach his ceiling.

Not to mention that the reason Headley signed later was that teams weren't beating down his door with offers. I mean, if he was so dead-set on signing with the Yankees as people claim, he could have just signed on day 1 of free agency, but he didn't. Also, I would have made Travis Shaw the opening day 3B ahead of WMB.

I'm calling it tomorrow. Severino will get EVERY close strike call. Someone on the Red Sox will get thrown out for arguing the strike zone. I'll guess 7 IP, 1 run, 0 BB.

Shaw looked pretty shaky at third when I saw him there last year so I can understand why the Red Sox were hesitant to go with him. Dude must have worked really hard to improve to the point he has (which squares with his reputation, for sure). But yeah, the Red Sox had numerous internal options better than Middlebrooks. Cecchini and even Ryan Roberts are better players (though Cecchini's 3B defense isn't good enough either).

What could possibly go wrong with penciling in a starting 3B who hadn't played 3B in years and had a 96 wRC+ in AAA the year before? Did you really predict he'd be better this year than Sandoval at 3rd? I don't know what's more unlikely, Shaw being better than Sandoval or predicting that Teixiera and ARod to have 56 HR by August 1st.

Captain Obvious but something has to be done with this bullpen. I know the starters have been bad but at least they're 16th in fWar with 5.8 right with the Twins and slightly above the Orioles at 5.6 and well above the bottom teams of Philly at 2.9 and Colorado at 1.3.
The bullpen on the other hand has generated 0.1 fWar good for 27th and better than only the Twins 0.0, Tigers -0.2 and Texas -1.1. Well behind the leaders of NYY 4.2, KC 3.9, Balt 3.7 and StL 3.6. I won't be surprised to see multiple trades this off season to address both the starters and relievers. Also think its greater than 50% Kelly is moved to the pen.

I was for signing a cheap vet and letting him, Htolt, WMBs and Cecchini battle it out. There's wasn't many around here who wanted an overweight 3B with four seasons of declining numbers. Especially at $95 mill.
