Re: your list, Eric, we're generally of similar tastes/opinions, which encourages me to see "Ghost Story" even more. However, I actually really liked the bleakness of "Logan," and I was supremely disappointed by "Get Out." The latter was, to me, a giant cliche in imaginative wrapping. While the acting was very good, and his friend excellent comic relief, I went in anticipating horror, and just felt totally deflated by the third act with the campiness. Never seemed to develop a consistent mood/tone to me, which is admittedly a major aspect of my horror sensibilities. The Imposter movie is much better than its reputation. It's drawn out by one of the worst extended action / fight sequences in film history in the middle, but it has excellent production design and they nail the PKD paranoia in the opening and ending. A Scanner Darkly might be my second favorite PKD novel (after Do Androids Dream ...). It's beautifully written. My indie sci-fi movie list (have I posted that link already? It's a labor of love) has my take on the film relative to the book. I really dug Ex Machina as a piece of filmmaking, despite the plot holes, but it also got the science of consciousness entirely wrong. (That she can understand the "Mary the color scientist" thought experiment actually proves she has subjective experience, so what precisely is the purpose of the testing? Why wouldn't her creator know her behavioral algorithm?) There was a rival film, The Machine, which in many ways I like better; in the bonus features the director admits to getting obsessed with the topic and reading everything he could get his hands on ... and it shows. Whereas my sense (and standard joke) is that Garland just read the Wikipedia article. Part way. You're in a distinct minority re Get Out. It's not, to my mind, a horror movie at all; it's a vicious social satire about race that uses sci-fi plot elements and horror tropes. That the third-act plot stuff was familiar and outlandish isn't supposed to be campy; rather, that those tired tropes are serving as a perfect metaphor for white cultural appropriation is a trip. I thought the tone was entirely consistent, right down to the ending. It's been an amazing year for fantastic films that function more or less entirely as metaphors or allegories. That describes four or five of my favorite 11 films of the year so far: A Ghost Story (less obviously than the others), mother!, Get Out, Colossal, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which are my #s 2, 3, 8, 9, and 11.

Eric, curious what you thought of Last Jedi?
I find the imbd reviews interesting. It currently gets a 7.6 score but if you read the user reviews, the vast majority of them are awful, with almost all of them under 5.
I haven't seen it yet. Hate going to the theater anymore...

I know it's not a movie but last night I downloaded all 7 seasons of Game of Thrones, I'm curious about what all the brouhaha is about. From scanning, it's not me favorite gendre so I might not go deep into them, time will tell.
My movie tastes are not what would normally be found in a movie buff thread so I'll throw out a top of my head list of all time favorites for giggles. (Time when it was made is a major consideration).
Clear 1-2-3: Gone With the Wind Dr. Zhivago Cool Hand Luke
Next tier (the particular order would change depending on when I did the list):
Godfather 1&2 but not 3 The Blues Brothers 1 & 2 Silence of the Lambs & Hannibal (Whatshisname (Hannibal) is one of my favorite actors) Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid Little Big Man (or pretty much anything with Hoffman but that's my favorite) Platoon (most realistic Vietnam combat scenes) Saving Private Ryan (the scenes when they were getting off the boat were incredible) Top Gun (great jet footage) The English Patient Star Wars 1 Avatar Forrest Gump Rocky 1 Indiana Jones (all) Thornbirds miniseries Roots miniseries Evita (still can't believe Madonna pulled that off) Terminator 1 12 Years a Slave Men In Black 1
Saw 1-6 but you pretty much have to watch them all in a short time span to appreciate that they thought through future Saws for each release. Some scenes from future saws had to have been shot while making earlier Saws.
Probably a few more.

The first two episodes of Game of Thrones were pretty good. I'm looking forward to watching more.
First, I started to watch last year's Oscar winner Moonlight which I hadn't seen but 30-40 minutes into it I shut it off. Good acting but a boring story about nothing.

Game of Thrones is epic, just keep watching it gets better and better. If you like it check out The Last Kingdom and Rome, two other great series that are similar. Rome was also epic and The Last Kingdom is like Vikings meets Game of Thrones. Was by far the best series I started watching this year.

Some recent action movies I really enjoyed were American Assassins, Atomic Blonde, Blade Runner and I was surprised by The Hitmans Bodyguard and Baby Driver. Both were very good. I really hated Mother. Maybe the worst movie I watched all year. Acting was good, just not a fan of that type of movie.
Haven't seen it mentioned but Sci-fi fans should see Valerian and the city of a thousand planets. It's an entertaining movie. I didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised. Also if you want to make your wife happy try The Mountain between us or Home Again. Not my type of movie, but the wife really liked them.

Thanks for the recommendations. lol, for my wife, if it isn't heavy action with a lot of dead people, she's likely not interested. The whole Terminator series, for example. Even action drama like the Hannibal series is of little interest. Interestingly, in Filipino Tagalog movies, she always watches light hearted comedy love stories.
The original Blade Runner wasn't one of my favorites. I almost always like the originals better than the remakes (The Thing, for example). Also, a lot of series movies seem to go downhill after the first one but maybe that's me in specific gendre overload. Alien, Predator, Rocky, American Pie, Friday the 13th, for example.
In terms of actual time spent viewing for both my wife and I, we have every Disney movie ever made and two kids. Do the math.

For me Rocky 4 is the most entertaining one, followed by Rocky 3. I also like Aliens 2 the best, but Aliens 3 was horrible.

If you turned Moonlight off after 30-40 minutes then it makes no sense. You need to watch the whole thing to get what it's about. Not saying you'll like it, but yeah, if you don't get through it, it's just a random movie. Had the second part where he's a teenager started yet when you stopped watching?

Just finished watching a sports documentary on Netflix simply called FASTBALL. Kevin Costner narrates . David Price Craig Kimbrel have spots in this. A lot of good stuff here. WITH MORE WINTER ON THE WAY!!! This may be a good alternative to watching snow fall.
WARNING;There is part where Goose Gossage talks about the fastball he threw to Yaz in the 1978 Yanks vs Red Sox game.

I wizzed through the last portions then read a few synopsis. It's just not my type of movie. I don't mind 'touchy feely' in a movie but not when touchy feely is all that it has to offer. No action, no historical perspective, no 'great' acting, no comedy, no outrageously pretty girls. I don't know the kid, I don't care. The problems portrayed in the movie are small time problems when compared to the real world everyday situations of millions of kids worldwide. I'm through the first seven Game of Thrones episodes, very pleasantly surprised on a lot of counts. ADD: A touchy feely movie I'd highly recommend is "On Golden Pond". In spiite of the annoyance of Hanoi Hannah, it is an acting clinic by Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda. No action, comedy, sex, history or deep plot.

I need subtitles for GoT so I know which characters to pay attention to. It seems like there are about 5000 of them, half of which have 1 scene in the entire series.

One problem with shows that air in multiple countries is that the exact timing is not the same everywhere. You will need to find the subtitle that synchs with the version of the show you are watching. It's a bit of a hassle but not all that bad since they download in about 1 second each. If all your episodes are from the same source then you only need to figure out which is the right one for episode 1 in any given season. Also, some translate the Valarian (and other tongues), some don't. If they use the word colored in the title, they do (they are in white but the Valarian, etc is in yellow) Vargas NcGillicutty

The subtitles I want would be something like "don't bother remembering this guy's name because you'll never see him again" or "pay attention to this because it'll come up again in 3 seasons".

Ah OK gotcha. There are commentary scripts but I don't think that what you are looking for. For me, I found the opposite, small characters do reappear quite often. My thought is that I'm glad I'm watching them bunched together in a short period because otherwise, there'd be too many story lines to see only once a week and be fully aware of the situation at hand. I use the scripts but mainly because of our current living situation, both computers/TVs are in the same room so, I either have to wait until everyone goes to bed or watch them in low volume with the dialog scripts. I also like the other tongues being translated, there's a lot of important info going on there. I'm not much of an actress/actor follower. I only recognize one actor, the guy that played the Sparrow high priest. I don't remember where I've seen him before though and I don't know a single cast member's name in real life. Does anyone know if the word 'supper' is common in parts of England ? The only place I've heard that word used is the North East USA. My deceased wife was from England and she used the word 'dinner'. Just curious. It's also interesting to me that the chief editor's first name is Crispin. Shakespeare would be proud.

Until last season, you needed to pay attention to every character in GOT. Even the small ones come back up years later. For the first 3 years I rewatched every season before the new one. You would always catch stuff you missed and get back into the story after 9 and 1/2 months. It just got to be too much, so I had to stop. Can't spend a month rewatching the series every year. Heck by now it might take 2 months, unless you have a ton of free time. The point being that almost nothing in GOT is just filler. It all has meaning and tons of little hints towards the future episodes.

Checking into this thread for the first time in forever ... The Last Jedi is in some ways my favorite Star Wars movie, and I'll have to rewatch The Empire Strikes Back for the first time since 1984 in order to confirm that it's overall #2. ( A New Hope didn't stand up as well as I thought it would.) I saw it twice in the span of five days, the second time with an out-of-town friend and his wife and his kid -- and he and the kid were also seeing it for the second time. In terms of non-sfx visual appeal, I think that just the battle scene in Snoke's chamber exceeds everything in all the other movies combined. Fanboys who would have been perfectly content to see the same story repeated in every movie (as long as the world was expanded with new stuff), and have a very rigid idea of what's allowed in the universe, hate this film, not because they don't think it was good, because they don't like what happened. There were things that delighted me because they surprised me, but these fans don't want any actual surprises. SPOILERS START: They especially hate that the crazy plan didn't work. Of course, because it didn't, we will never be sure again whether the crazy plan in every future Star Wars movie will work or not. Fanboys think it's too dark (e.g., the situation the Resistance is in at the end), and yet compared to the average film it's still hugging puppies. SPOILERS END Basically, this was a film targeted at the huge amount of viewers who love the movies but are not obsessed with them, and its purpose was to make our interest in the series permanent by being unpredictable. Nothing kills a franchise more than being predictable.

The 8th and final year won't be airing until 2019. The bad news is that it won't air until 2019. I just finished the first 7 years, liked it a lot. My favorite character is the Imp but the Dragon queen is great eye candy. Funny that they left it with her and her brother as lovers, incest seemed to be a theme throughout. A wild guess is that they will find out she isn't a Tagaryen and everyone will live happily ever after.

Snow is her eldest brothers son, so she is his aunt... In the history of the Targaryens, they all marry their brothers and sisters, so this is pretty normal. Some even marry two or more sisters...
