Good for McCann calling out Iglesias for his feeble attempt at Castillo's ground ball. Iglesias is lucky Castellano got between them after that feeble push as McCann would have crushed him. Schilling and Kruk praised McCann for calling Iglesias out for not trying.

Scott Lauber @scottlauber · 19m19 minutes ago Cherington said he "expects there will be another opportunity" for Allen Craig at some point this season #RedSox That's it... I'm fully on board the Fire Cherington train now. Maybe that means he will be mike Napolied?? Can't see it but??

Kelly had 7 K's through 2 2/3 and then 0 after that. Another reason why he could excel in the bullpen.

This is a good example of how Kelly could be a great bullpen guy. Look at how good he was the first time through the order. He actually has a big split in his career in the other direction, and his first inning has been his worst. If he's dramatically better as a reliever, it's because he has better control throwing more often and/or jettisons a pitch to simplify things -- probably the slider, which is his best swing and miss pitch but also the pitch that he gets killed on.

I'm not convinced that Kelly will be a great bullpen guy. Stamina doesn't seem to be his big issue. Inconsistent control and command is his big issue and that can bite him in relief just as easily as it does as a starter.
If he can keep his velocity in the 6th inning as easily as he does in the 1st inning, and I think he does, then it makes sense for him to be a starter. I don't think he's struggling just because he's in the starting role.
I do think that he missed Yadier telling him what to throw, as if he can't figure that out himself. Having an inexperienced catcher like Swihart probably didn't help him.

Having an inexperienced catcher like Swihart probably didn't help him. Stamina is almost never a factor in whether a guy is better suited to starting or relief. It's hard to find any stamina factor at all in starting pitchers as a whole. And most managers will lift a guy at the point where he gets gassed. Kelly does hold his velocity well compared to others, but the skill of being no more below average in the 7th than you are in the 2nd is not one you highlight on a resume. The statement I bolded is either demonstrably wrong or missing the point, depending on semantics. Guys who convert to relief sometimes have dramatic improvements in K/BB ratio. That's a fact. Your assertion is like saying "Depression is his big issue and that can cripple him just as easily on Prozac as unmedicated." It's technically true, but only because Prozac doesn't work for a lot of people. And working backwards to your opening sentence, nobody is convinced he's even going to be a good bullpen guy. There's a certain chance -- my gut says 25 to 30% -- that he can be a great guy, but you have to give it a shot to find out. And right now there is no downside to that, whereas the odds of your being convinced that he's one of your five best starters by the end of the year are minimal.

David Ortiz's 2016 option will be triggered with his next PA. Sweet! Happy to have him as a Red Sox one more year. And if we are in it in 2016 very happy to have him at the dish in the clutch.

Wonder if he can hit singles maybe a couple gappers and if this year's/end of last year's slump wasn't just a pothole otw to being a 250 hitting defensive wiz we can trade with someone else for pitching!

I didn't see anything here and apologize if it is located somewhere else on the site.. The info that Koji's wrist was **not** broken last night, after taking the liner off the bat from Kinsler: Wrist not broken

Does JBJ need to get some knocks the next two days to have any chance of getting on the field when Mookie's ready to play? I'd run him out there everyday but I just don't see that happening.

Since June 11 (202 PA), he's at .266 / .371 / .584 despite a .234 BABIP, with 25 UBB (plus 4 IBB) and 29 SO. Before that, he had 17 UBB and 35 SO in 222 PA, with the same BABIP but a .219 / .297 / .372 line. Huge increase in HR and big improvement in K/BB. I'd love to know how much of that improvement is vs. LHP.

Seems like the odds of dugout fracas increases if Miley also picks off McCann?

You think Iglesias dropped that 2 out bunt to piss off McCann?

I have Said all season that I have seen no decrease in ortiz's bat speed. A lot of media people doubted, but he is proving them wrong.

The story for the rest of the season is Ortiz' chase of 500. I think he gets it. He's also 4 RBI away from 1600.

I'm putting "somewhat agile 3rd baseman who doesn't swing at everything" on my Christmas List this year. Santa owes me from last year.

Miley is actually pitching well and hitting all his spots. I don't care what the box score says.

Nice of Ausmus to let some of our guys face Simon a 4th time. Hope Farrell doesn't return the favor.
