Sucre never pitched before in pro ball, not in minors. Although as a Venezuelan, he likely has taken the mound in the winter. 19 pitches, 15 strikes. He pitched one inning against Houston back in June.

Let's just say, if JBJ keeps this up, all the teams that declined trades for him at the deadline are going to regret it. JBJ would be a star if he hit for a line of .241/.333/.456 year in and year out. I'd be shocked if they shopped him at the deadline at all. Based on his year in AAA, he projected as our second best OFer next year. Why would you shop that guy? Only if you didn't believe that minor league numbers were predictive ... and Bill James has cited as his most important discovery the fact that they are. Note that precisely a week ago he was hitting .121 / .254 / .172 in 71 PA, and now, 5 G and 23 PA later, he is at .250 / .340 / .500. That's .591 / .609 / 1.364 over the five games, BTW.

I'm not saying that will/should shop him. I'm saying, he was available a this past deadline 2 weeks ago, and if he keeps this up (unlikely) but if he actually becomes an average to above average MLB hitter, a lot of teams are gonna regret not pulling the trigger.

Ortiz 2014: .263/.355/.517 wRC+ 135 (.256 BABIP) Ortiz 2015: .263/.352/.512 wRC+ 129 (.256 BABIP) Ortiz is certainly declining. At this pace he should be totally replaceable by 2020-something.

I don't know how you can say this with any certainty. Ok, he was seemingly available and being dangled out there. We will never know the truth though. He was always worth more to us than anyone else. The only reason you ever trade for a guy like him is if they're getting given away, like we did with Middlebrooks. You don't trade for him like he's a potential All-Star. Now if he finishes the season with a wRC+ over 100, his value will skyrocket this winter. I still want to keep him, but if a team offers that kind of value, I'd listen.

I don't know how you can say this with any certainty. Ok, he was seemingly available and being dangled out there. We will never know the truth though. When I said "I would be shocked if they shopped him at the deadline," that was past tense. I believe the only source that they did shop him was one of Nick Cafardo's scouts. It's unclear whether those scouts are a) imaginary, b) equally as ill-informed (polite for a different word that begins with "i") as Cafardo when it comes to playing armchair GM, or, and this is my favorite, c) trolling Cafardo by telling him obviously wrong things to see if he'll actually print them, and/or by simply endorsing his obviously wrong suggestions when he badgers them unfairly for GM-like advice (since Carfardo should know that scouts have no special expertise at all for what teams should do, nor are they expected to). Which brings us back to this: yes, I would regard "you should sell low on a former top 25 to 35 prospect even though he's been the best young hitter still in AAA and is possibly the best defensive outfielder in MLB and hence currently projects to be your second-best outfielder next year" to be obviously wrong.

Actually, that game made me sort of sad, in a "what might have been" sort of way. But it certainly made the team look pretty promising for next year.

I've seen a few people say this, but their pitching is still garbage. I'm not usually the glass half full type, but the young core they have looks great, even if all these guys don't pan out. Eduardo and Henry Owens could make or break next season.

We have a Mookie,JBJ,and Rusney outfield today. Good to see Rusney back in there.
Also, Hanley won't play until Tuesday at the earliest. That's 11 days, not sure why he isn't on the DL?

Henry, please try pitching to the corners. Stop throwing the ball right down the middle of the plate.

But that's the positional team, they still have real problems (short term and medium-term) with their pitching.

Wow, Rusney? Really? Lol. The outfield has been a circus this year to say the least.

Guess that marks the end of Bradley's one-at-bat slump.

I think it's fair to say that most days in which Owens records a 10/1 K/BB ratio will turn out far better than this one.

Hank's a talented pitcher. He loses his mechanics, for sure, and he can be prone to big innings, but he's got some stuff that'll play, I think. His breaking ball looks a lot better than it used to.
