We are closer to a playoff spot than the Nationals

They really need to stop sitting jackie, mookie or castillo in favor of De Aza or Hanley. Castillo and Jackie in particular need those ABs and are more important for the future.
I get the argument Hanley is getting paid a lot and he needs to figure it out... But castillo is also getting paid a lot, is a better player right now and could probably make better use of the playing time.

Did Mookie suddenly forget how to play 2B? If they really want to keep playing Hanley so badly, why not let Mookie play 2nd?

I like the idea of them sitting Bogaerts and Betts once a week or so rest of season; it's a really long year and I remember some former player talking about how after his 1st full year he was so worn down he thought he had mono through November

7.5 back of LAA with 40 to play. YA GOTTA BELIEVE .... Just think, if Hanley and Pablo had simply played at replacement level they'd be only 5 back... They've combined to be 6 bWAR below what they averaged (per game) the three previous years. Plus they've been -0.4 and -0.2 wins, respectively, in clutch hitting.

Right. The Nats are 5 out of the division.

If we knock the mfy out of the division title between that and playing time for the prospects. It will be a good seaon. Except for the deadwood.

Several of you must not have read Edes' piece on Sandoval today in which he writes that Sandoval has been working on his weight and his mobility and that there are improvements in both. I read it and don't really care. Let's revisit in spring training or better yet, send him packing. He needs to commit to baseball as his entire life, not just for a 3 week period or however long it has been. Or just retire when he's 32 after embarrassing himself for too long. you seem like barrels of fun. No credit for some of the great plays he's made recently or how hard he's been hitting the ball, and going the other way, just talk of him retiring? after 3 years on this site I've just come to the conclusion that ubless said player is your fave, you just seem to hate on the guy. Personally, I haven't seen any lack of effort. His weight, hasn't gone down, not much beyond 5 to 10 pounds though, since spring training. Yet you question his drive. Like you know him.

He actually said that he signed in Boston so he could be himself and not have to get weighed all the time like the Giants made him. "Be himself" = "Be as fat as he wants to be", because what else could it mean? I read that recently and that's pretty much the entire source of my dislike of him. People are naive if they don't think the weight has anything to do with him not being as good. His best year was the year he was the thinnest. He got pulled out of a game last month because he had to run for 3 bases without stopping. Some people defending him make it sound like it's impossible for him to be in better shape. He's getting $19 million per year from the Red Sox so he owes it to the team and the fans.

We shouldn't be playing spoiler to the MFY. We should be competing with them. This is a terrible season. Spoiling the MFY's chances would be nice, but it doesn't erase the horrible performance this year.

Yeah with a new manager, new President and the kids its actually fun to watch again.
When it was mid July and Farrell was doing a horrible job managing, just throwing out broken down vets this team was pretty close to unwatchable. I wish Farrell the best of luck in his treatment but I absolutely do not want him back.

I wish Farrell the best of luck in his treatment but I absolutely do not want him back. Isn't this so much like the time Joe Morgan took over in the 80s? The Sox had been playing below expectations and then went on to win 19 of 20 or 21. The uncertainty that had crept in as this season wallowed on has ended. The club has a new manager (no one's fault), a new head of Ops, Lucchino gone, Cherington gone, a new GM on the horizon, the kids playing more, change to the rotation.....No more waiting for the guillotine. It's all like a breath of fresh psychological and mental air. The albatross has fallen off. Plus I like Lovullo giving some of the guys some days off. First the club needs to see all the players to evaluate better and it gives a rest to those out for a game too...keeps the perspective fresh. Watching the kids do well is what we live for on this site! I have no idea how the Sox team has hit since the beginning of August but man they are raking! This has been so exciting in an otherwise very down year. I now set my schedule and can't wait for the next game.

I don't know, he's been playing with a bit more focus, doesn't look as heavy. I don't think he's a total loss. Hanley on the other hand,..ugh. Baseball is so weird. I can't begin to imagine to have the guy who brought me in a gave me a big contract get fired precisely because he brought me in. I know I'd really feel crappy about it. I feel like Sandoval and Porcello will do what they can to show this market that they're better than what they've shown.

Thanks chavopepe for the snapshot of what is possible in 2016 at C, 1B, SS, LF (sans Hanley), CF, RF. That snapshot is alot different from a month or two ago. Some more kids belongin that recent snapshot, including Owens, Rodriguez and Wright. The kids, plus Pedey, Papi and Brockstar will make for a formidable 2016. Even the pitching has become easier to fix. Lots to smile about, lots of reasons to fill Fenway.

I read the same article, and I thought it meant that he could be himself in that locker room with the other personalities that were already established there, like David Ortiz or send interaction. I read the same article, and I thought id man that he could be him so now locker room with the other person audi that were already established there, like david ortiz or bogaerts,Hanley or even some sort of chili Davis connection I don't know. What I on normal human being, didn't take from it was "I want to be as fat as I can get' Some people don't want to be happy, I've watched in the last 3 weeks or so and seeing a different player proves to me that he didn't just want to get his money and start eating until he died which is what it feels like you are insinuating

It is much more fun to listen to the games now than it was a month ago. This is almost a completely different team - and a much better one. I don't think this is a fluke.

Wonder what the reason is that both Lovullo and Farrell seem to not like playing Castillo.

I think they should try Bradley third in the lineup with Bogaerts second. That would put three fast runners at the top of the order.
I would like to see Castillo in the lineup every day but the only way that can be done and keep Betts and Bradley in the lineup is to bench Ramirez. I don't think they can do that.
