ERod is freaking painting the corners in the last couple innings. Real nice outing by Erod. He was looking worn down the last few starts. Well done.

.500. That's my goal for this team. Have to finish 17-9. I started thinking about that a few weeks ago. It would be a great comeback. Some talk about going to a six man rotation, and when Papi hits 500 he's likely to sit. Not playing Hanley and Panda helps, but probably not enough. In case there's any doubt, I don't care about the losers thread on draft status.

Knocking the Yanks out of a playoff spot or ending their division title chase would be fun.

I have to edit this post, but can anyone make an argument that JBJ hasn't been the redsox best player for the last 45 days? all but 1 (me thinks) of his xbh, all but 2 rbi and he's now opsing 950 or whatever and after his complete breakout and followup big games he's continued to git, and hit the ball hard. It seems like the only thing the naysayers have left is he doesn't make contact or hes hitting cookies. It's the MLB. Mike Trout strikes out 150 times a year. Papi aside, I think JBJ has improved and been our best player the last month and a half...which is not so small a sample size JBJ has been great. I'm rooting for him. But even as a non stat head, 45 games is a small sample for me. It's been a great sample though ,of what might be. well, he had a three run triple today, and if and plays would have gone his way he would have made them outs. so today he's 250/250/750. another .1000 day ops for JBJ, our best player recently and that's saying a lot with papi, mookie, xman, and blake all doing their thing. and brock too

Umm, JBJ is not Mike Trout. Not even in same universe I don't think anyone is seriously saying that, but he has been Troutian in the last few weeks. I wouldn't think anybody on this forum expects this ridiculous power surge to last long-term, we are just happy that he has seemingly turned himself from AAAA player to a very valuable piece

Umm, JBJ is not Mike Trout. Not even in same universe He sure does seem to be A.J. Pollock, though (with more strikeouts and more power as a wash). The difference is that Pollock went 17th in the draft, had a solid but underwhelming ml career (including missing his second season) and was never a top 100 prospect, and then immediately lived up to original expectations in MLB. JBJ pretty much did the opposite: killed it in the minors and was ranked in the top 35, struggled terribly in MLB after being rushed and got so messed up he lost a year, and is now living up to his ml promise.

Sox are three games out now, so perfectly doable with so many games against TB and Baltimore. Third place is so much better than another last place finish, especially how it's coming about (great performances from the kids, Porcello and Miley pitching well).

The kids are playing so well, but I'd like to throw this out.......Josh Rutledge has played quite well and is only 26. Him and Holt give us 2 very solid options behind the starting infield. I hope Travis Shaw starts back up, but I have my doubts. Rutledge has been a solid pick up. So true Steve. Really who hasn't been doing well. What a damned turnaround. A month ago the Sox looked like the Phillies and now they are playing the most exciting baseball I can remember. DD has inherited a dream situation.

That's -1.0 WAR / 150 to 3.9 (give or take 0.5 from rounding). Not sure if it's real, but it's amusing.

Umm, JBJ is not Mike Trout. Not even in same universe Did Trout go 4 for 4 today with a bomb and a double and 4 rbi? Didn't think so.

He has a career high K%, career low ISO, and a .412 BABIP propping up his batting average. The defense has also seemed extremely shaky to me, and his career DRS and UZR strongly back that up. He's more or less a replacement level 2B-only, so if we keep him in the system, hopefully it's as nothing more than AAA depth.

I've got him pegged as a nice guy to stash at AAA while he has options left, and be a replacement who is actually a replacement level player. Guys who aren't but are required by injuries to get a lot of PT can kill you. (Speaking of which, I think that setting replacement level as the average performance of the actual replacements is demonstrably wrong. Half of the replacement players can't be below replacement level, by definition! Replacement level should be set (I think just as obviously) one standard deviation below their average. This will barely affect the WARs of regulars, but it will make much more sense of fringe guys who in the current system get 100 PA here and another 100 there, with slightly negative WARs across the board.)
