I remember Phillies fans thinking the Red Sox and their fans were crazy to not give up a Blake Swihart for Hamels. They called us "prospect huggers" and they sarcastically used labels like "future HOF Swihart". I want Swihart to punish every Phillies pitcher this series. A HR or two would be nice.

On the one hand, I can't get mad because every team overvalues their own players. Lots of people on this forum were saying the same things about the Pirates after they wouldn't trade their prospects last year at the deadline. But on the other hand there's an irony in calling Swihart a "future Hall of Famer" derisively when Swihart has a better chance than any current Philadelphia Phillie of being a Hall of Famer one day. And Phillies fans are generally obnoxious anyway. So yeah, watching Swihart run all over them would be pretty sweet. How many organizations would Swihart be the best 25-and-under guy? At least half, right? With the Red Sox he's like fourth. The young talent in this organization is insane.

"And Phillies fans are generally obnoxious anyway." -- Ya think? They're more delusional, like their GM. I remember arguing with one guy on overthemonster.com for a long time who came over to comment on every Hamels article yelling at everyone who thought they could get Hamels for less than Xander AND Mookie. (Who BTW have 7.0 fWAR this season vs. 3.5 for Hamels at 1/22nd the salary) Not that that is proof of anything, but I also lived in Philly for 8 years and the baseball fans are nowhere near as smart as the Eagles and Flyers fans.

Can someone please tell me why Sandoval continues to hit in the 2-spot? And why Holt, who is carrying a .601 OPS in the 2nd half, continues to hit in front of both Rusney and JBJ?

Veteran "respect", just like Farrell would do it. I understand that this can't be an easy position for Lovullo, but if he wants to manage his own team one day, he's not doing a great job of showing it. He's managing not to offend Farrell by coming up with anything too different, and not doing anything too stupid with DD having everybody's job on the line. His lineups look like he's thinking "what would Farrell do", then he goes ahead and does it - rather than putting his own creativity on it and strengthening his own managerial case. Or maybe Sandoval batting second is his way of being "creative", not sure what's worse. Pretty weird that we'll see him manage for a few months - at no point does he really do anything that would excite you at the thought he could be the manager long term. He's just holding up the fort, which maybe is the mandate at this point.

I was going to say that they're just hitting people where they're used to or are comfortable, but Sandoval coming into this season had 17 career PA hitting 2nd. And he has a 440 OPS there this year. It's kind of insane. Guys with a high BA and mediocre Iso and IsoD are good for precisely one thing: knocking in their teammates. They're good guys to have hitting 6 or 7 after some guys who get on base a lot.

It will be interesting to see what Kelly's pitch mix will look like tonight. Like most pitchers, he'll vary it start to start, but he's also a guy who sometimes picks a whole new approach and runs with it for a while. He's doing that now. Here's his last 5 starts:
When FB Ch Sl Cu Previous career 68% 12% 10% 11% BOS@DET (8/7/15) 45% 20% 31% 4% SEA@BOS (8/14/15) 66% 14% 17% 3% CLE@BOS (8/19/15) 64% 12% 17% 7% BOS@CHA (8/24/15) 46% 20% 24% 10% BOS@NYN (8/29/15) 60% 23% 11% 7% Here's his pitch effectiveness, in runs per 100 pitches. Negative is good. Obviously, making a single mistake or great pitch on a night where you only threw a few of a given pitch will give you a crazy number.
When FB Ch Sl Cu BOS@DET (8/7/15) 4.05 1.42 -0.63 23.00 SEA@BOS (8/14/15) -1.61 -5.20 7.61 0.67 CLE@BOS (8/19/15) -3.05 4.58 -3.06 7.00 BOS@CHA (8/24/15) -1.70 -5.29 -2.88 -6.20 BOS@NYN (8/29/15) -4.11 1.17 -2.18 -4.71 Last 4 starts -2.64 -1.51 -0.15 -1.63

I think they're using Sandoval 2nd as a placeholder while they get other players used in other spots in the lineup. Pedroia is going to bat second when he's healthy, so I'm thinking they aren't going to bother having Bogaerts/Swihart/etc. get comfortable there. Not saying I necessarily agree with the approach but I think the key is that the team's goal right now is getting the young guys geared up in their roles for 2016.

I don't get Sandoval hitting second either. Or Holt. My only explanation is that he thinks they are the most likely to perform given career numbers. In Sandoval's case that's reasonable career wise, and to an extent Holt is when looked at on a career basis. It would be great if they both did finish strong except for the fact that we all are playing for a protected pick.

Or maybe Sandoval batting second is his way of being "creative", not sure what's worse. I think Lovullo just agrees with Farrell about basically everything and thinks Farrell's way is the right way. It's not that he's intentionally imitating Farrell, he thinks that way himself in the first place. Which of course completely disqualifies him from managing a major league team in my opinion.

It's mind blowing at the potential for Betts. His defense should only get better in CF, where he's already in/near the top 10 according to Fangraphs, and his offense is already above league average at just shy of his 23rd birthday, and he's been massively above league average at every level he's played at.
I think Bogaerts still has the chance to be the better of the two bats (and therefore a "likelier" MVP candidate), but Betts may likely end up just as much, if not more valuable overall. Betts' ability to play CF also allows for JBJ to play RF at a sensational level and if his bat plays, it makes the decision that much easier.

I'm really looking forward to watching this OF for a full year in 2016. Did anyone catch the pre game show when TC mentioned how these young outfielders remind him of 1975? Jim Ed almost got violent with him. Too funny. Psycho Lyons was the voice of reason.
