Regarding Glovegate with Hanley.... the gloves of today are all oil treated, even the pro models. They can literally be broken in in a few days, they don't take months like the gloves from 30 years ago. Maybe Hanley, who never wore a 1st base mitt before, put on Nap's and loved it so he decided to keep using it ?

Oh yeah, I've disliked that contract from the start and have always been wary about his aging curve (both because of the defense and because his main offensive skill (making a lot of good contact on pitches outside the zone) ages poorly). For that deal to work out, they really needed to get a lot of surplus value in the first couple years of the deal, and that certainly seems unlikely to happen now. With that said, if Sandoval bounces back to a 110 wRC+, he's probably the best 3B on the roster even with below-average defense. I'd take Holt, though Holt has more value as a utility player, especially on a team that often carries 13 pitchers. Still, there's probably what... a 25-35% chance Travis Shaw is a better player than Sandoval right now? And if Sandoval is worse than Shaw in year two of a 5/$95 contract, that's bad.

Holt's lack of arm makes him a defensive liability at 3B to me, and as you suggested, if it's close, you'd prefer to keep Holt as the utility guy. But yeah, at this point, it's all about triage with Sandoval's contract.

Holt is fun to watch, until he isn't. That part of it often happens when he's paying third. His footwork can absolutely stink, he ends up on the wrong side of the bag, and he's not fluid at all with catch and swipe tags. At short his range is limited at best, and he lacks consistency, good plays sprinkled liberally with poor ones. He's a wonderful utility player, emphasis on utility.

Reports out of camp is that Hanley is goofing around and laughing while not putting extra work at first base already.
Is anybody else worried? I kind of am, I want this guy succeed here at first for just one year. The Sox could really use his bat potential this year. God this stinks

I have a good question. If Hanley fails at first, can anyone see the Red Sox using Hanley in a Mike Carp role in 2013 and be a guy mostly used in a pinch hitting role? With Holt the Sox can carry a positionless player in Hanley if need be. Maybe Hanley can be quite good pinch hitting for Rusney or JBJ late in games where you need a good at bat saved. Hanley can at least do that. He can also fill in for Ortiz once in a while at dh too.

Heard him on the radio yesterday, saying pretty much that. I'm mixed about it, because Merloni's opinion is probably the only one in the local baseball media I really care to listen to, but I think he's been pretty hard on Hanley (vs. Sandoval, for example). At the same time, he said this last year as well, about Hanley not taking the time to do the work in Left field, and that showed up in the results.

This is reaching self-parody level. Every little thing he (and Sandoval) do going forward are going to be subject to confirmation bias by the talk radio crowd. If you're convinced that they're lazy dispassionate jerks, you'll see everything through that lens.

Exactly, jmei. There's not much for unbiased opinions here, everything Hanley & Pablo through a certain colored lens. You want guys loose and able to laugh and joke. The guys are human. The glove issue is BS used by Hanley haters. Let's just see what happens. I'm NOT going to apologize for him, but I'm going to give him a chance to prove himself at 1B. Open mind.

Yes, everything is fine. Pablo is in much better shape while fatter and Hanley is working hard on defense as always.
Those two poor guys. They didn't do anything to bring this on themselves. Silly negative people will criticize anything, even guys making $19-22 million per season and giving every indication that they don't care that they're worth less than zero and literally ruined an entire season. But just wait, things will be different this time. I'm fully confident for some reason other than what I see, hear and read.

If someone said something incendiary on Boston sports talk radio about a player who's already been established as a punching bag for Boston sports talk radio, it MUST be true.

Yeah, it's a fine line. Some of the commentary can get a bit over the top, but you can't just dismiss it as "biased". I shut down most of the local media, but I listen when somebody like Lou says it, even if I don't agree. As I said, he highlighted the fact that Hanley didn't seem to put in extra work last year, and we all saw it. And to be clear, from what I heard at least, he wasn't saying that Hanley shouldn't be laughing, etc. (now that would be silly). Just pointing that he's got a lot of work to do in pinning down some of the fundamentals of playing first base, and that the way he was going about it so far, goofing off, a little bit unfocused seemed a bit worrying. He talked about Hanley continuously snapping his glove (or something) when he received the ball, kind of to play it "I got this" cool, but a habit that may lead to a lot of dropped balls if that keeps up.
By the same token, he seemed surprisingly positive on Sandoval's bat, and has been pretty positive all along on Kelly as a fifth starter. So I actually happen to think it's fair to pay attention to his commentary.
Now Felger, Mazz, Ordway, people like that - just shut off the radio, that's what I do.

You know what would be a big story? If one of the two gave some indication that something might be different this season. I don't listen to talk radio.

You mean training for six weeks with a minor league coach over the offseason? That kind of indication?

Peter Gammons @pgammo Ruben Amaro:"Now I know my scouts did a great job and we asked for the right players for Hamels(Swihart, Betts, Bradley, Bogaerts)." Okay, that's actually really funny.

Fat Pablo in Spring Training 2016: Hmmm...where did I heard this BS before? Oh, yeah it was said by a certain fat, overpaid 3rd baseman in 2015: God, I've never hated a baseball player with such a burning passion than this falla!

While being disappointed in Sandoval's conditioning I'm more distraught by the media, and perhaps some fans following them. The nation is currently making some progress with regard to racial and sexual orientation prejudice, however the derogatory weight comments by Felger, and to a lesser extent Tom Werner were offensive and people in my corporation would be immediately dismissed for them. Yes he is overpaid and underperforming, however I had personal experience in the past with compulsive eating and it is a very difficult trap to climb out of- almost like Newtonian physics in that the harder you attempt to resist an urge to not binge the more you bring it on. It is an illness, and is widespread nationwide.
In general the over critical nature of the Boston media, Felger, Shaunessy in particular is a disincentive for players to come here, and just spreads negative vibes in what could be a more enjoyable pastime. Witness the hot seat Don Sweeny is now in as no deadline move will be viewed positively. This "win every year pressure" is what results in moves like Bagwell wheras patience and a longer term view enables more effective team building- yes it's better to take some lumps some years.

It is an illness, and is widespread nationwide. He has/will have $95 million from the Red Sox to deal with his "problem". This is an incredibly insensitive sentiment to the over one billion people on this planet who live (or die) on a dollar a day who are starving and don't have clean water, medical care or access to education. Let's have a little perspective and only call real problems an actual problem if we're going to compare professional sports to real life.

John Tomase @jtomase 7m7 minutes ago Pablo Sandoval just said his body fat percentage was 23% last year and is down to 17% now. "I'm proud of that," he said. "I worked hard."

What would be awesome, would be a way to view tweets without quoting the post, clicking on the BBC Code tab, copying the url, opening a new tab and pasting the url. In firefox anyway...
