I think that the annual signing and discussion thread is my favorite thread of the year.
On another note, can we not only ban nepotism picks, but the extra announcement of who the wasted pick is related to? And the last comments thanking the commissioner, and the clapping at the end of the conference call selections. Can we make all of that punishable by taking money from the allotment pool?

Python @jbelge15 2 u2 uur geleden Westvale, NY Big thanks to the redsox for drafting me! Very proud and humbling moment. Thanks to all my coaches, family and friends for the support. Jeff Belge seems very happy judging by his twitter feed. Ranked #68 by BA.

OK, draft is over. Let's put all the discussion regarding draftees, interviews with draftees, and potential signings (or not) here.

Just a general comment, we seem to have drafted several relievers which I don't recall us doing in past years.
Love the draft, love the SP coverage, thanks guys.

Rather than focus on starter v. reliever distinctions, I prefer to look at it as the Sox drafted some power arms. Through their development in the minors, they will sort out the starter/reliever roles. The Groome pick makes this a great draft in my eyes. Rare to have the chance to draft a top-of-rotation arm like that.

I would also like to thank the SP staff for the amazing coverage and the work they put in. I'd also like to thank my fellow posters. The discussion in here is unrivaled on any other sox forum and provides an active place for us prospect junkies to get our fix.

Rare to have the chance to draft a top-of-rotation arm like that. Exactly. We've only had 2 top 10 picks since we drafted Nixon in 93', we drafted Ball in an incredibly razor thin draft class in 13' and obviously Benny Baseball last year which looks to be a good one. Usually top talent arms like Groome are long gone before we get a chance to take them. I think the Sox had a very solid overall draft, the top arm in Groome and loads of college arms that should be able to move through the system quickly as relievers (and some longer to develop as starters). We should not have to spend a whole lot of money signing FA relief pitchers for the foreseeable future, which should save us money here and there to ::ahem:: sign Xander, Betts, and Bradley to long term extensions.

No official news but perhaps some hints as Nicholas Quintana @_Quintana12 is now following SoxProspects.com on Twitter and Stephen Nogosek (@stephennogosek) profile has that he is a RHP for the Boston RedSox Organization. Also, Matt McLean @mattmclean6 Jun 10 Matt McLean Retweeted MLB Draft Tracker Thank you redsox for this opportunity! God is Great! Ready to get to work

From the article: According to multiple major league sources, as of Friday evening, there hadn’t been any significant dialogue yet between the Red Sox and Groome about a signing bonus. One source characterized the sides’ likely positions, at least initially, as “far apart,” to the point where Groome (through his representative) declined a request by the Red Sox that he take part in a standard post-draft conference call with reporters who cover the Red Sox.
Which would seem to throw water on the idea that for all the subsequent rounds, the Sox were drafting with the idea that they had talked and pretty much knew what it would take to sign him.

I think the distinction for us is whether or not they project as relievers. From my perspective, I think that we are fine with taking relievers if they have a shot of becoming starters in the pros. I don't know how many relievers we take that the FO thinks will remain relievers.

I read this as the advisor trying to prove his value. I don't know if the agent has ever represented an elite prospect before, but I do not recall seeing his name previously. This is a marketing opportunity for the agent and he does not want to blow it. At the end of the day, I would be shocked if Groome did not take the last and best offer from the Sox.

How long can the Sox wait is important as well. We'll know fairly soon.

Obviously these quotes are coming from the player's advisors. I mean the kid came out right after the draft and said he didn't care about money, that's a nightmare for any agent to hear. Expect this type of lingo to be leaked in the press for the next few weeks as the agent tries to get as much as he can. Bottom line is I'll be shocked if he doesn't sign.

I'd be shocked if Groome doesn't sign too. They should be able to offer him 4 mil, and its hard to see how he turns that down given how high his draft stock was beforehand and he still slipped to 12. It would be a pretty big gamble to turn it down and try to get 5 or 6 next year in a deep draft, especially since that would give him the reputation as a tough sign and the issue could crop up again the next year.
I'm not too too worried about the 11-40 guys. If they get the first 10 i'd be very happy with this draft given their pool.

I view Jeff Belge as emergency plan "B" if they can't sign Groome. I seriously doubt if the Sox will be able to land both.
I do think Groome will sign though but it never hurts to have a decent backup which would cushion the 1 year wait if we can't sign Groome.

Yeah, honestly I can see the Red Sox signing only one universally ranked player (MLB/BA/PG) after round 10. That means only one of Quintana, Fitzgerald, Jones, Belge, or Bergner. And even then I'm ok with it. At least assuming they sign rounds 1-10, which I believe they will.

They signed a lot of shortstops and relievers it seems like. A little odd they didnt sign more outfielders.
