Gives me hope when I see the bullpen keeps opponents runs off the board.

Loved watching Barnes' emotion in the dugout there celebrating a teammate picking him up.

Neon Leon, at it again... I would note that Leon's hot streak has now gone on for the catching equivalent of 1/3 of a season. This is starting to become more than just a JBJ hot streak. The amazing part has been his offensive consistency -- he's been a positive contributor in almost every game he's played. How long until the organization thinks that "hey, we have to start considering this guy in our future plans?" Or is it past that point already? All of a sudden the Vazquez/Swihart tangle just inherited an extra string of spaghetti. Past that point, I think. At the very least he's an elite backup. Swihart's lost season will have him going back to Pawtucket next year to recover his trade value. CV is now out of options. The interesting thing is that, because of his history, Leon's trade value will be far less than his likely on-field value, for at least most of next year. I argued against having CV and Swihart share the starting catching, but having Leon and CV do that next year, in order to get a better read on both, makes a lot of sense.

Picked a good weekend to spend in Boston. Good vibes around the city both of these nights. Hope we keep rolling.

I hope to god the FO give every chance to Swihart to reclaim that catchers job. He is so young especially for a catcher prospect. My perfect scenario would be Vasquez and Swihart to make the team. I never believed the reporters that they had to move one of them. Where would they be if they moved one of them?
I even bought if Leon is for real and claims a job, it's even better because now you have Swihart or Vasquez as back up .This is where the difference shows more Swihart can do other positions and he has a bat also. This makes the Sox bench next year even stronger. We will see its a nice problem to have.

Awesome clutch job by Ziegler. WOW! I wonder if anyone in MLB history has ever entered the game with the bases full and nobody out and fanned the side on 9 pitches. Both events -- the Houdini (escaping that situation scoreless, as named by Bill James) and the perfect inning -- are themselves rare, the latter especially so. Ziegler, of course, missed it by one two-strike foul. It would be fun to find the most impressive innings of relief of all time (i.e, since we have pitch data). The most impressive possible save would be the perfect Houdini, in the 9th inning or later, with a 1-run lead, and all of the 9 strikes swinging, and against three great hitters. You could find all of the Houdinis where all of the pitches were strikes, and rank them by the other criteria.

Kopeck did that this year, if I'm not mistaken. An immaculate inning. MiL, of course, and the bases were not full.

Fairly surprised to see Buchholz on there. Even in his 'on' years I don't think of him as a strikeout pitcher. Pedro is less surprising.

About the batting order: nobody really has an idea yet where Benintendi and Leon rank relative to Pedroia and Ramirez. We're fairly sure that Ortiz, Bradley, Betts, and Bogaerts are the four best hitters, and it seems likely that Shaw is the weakest link (although still above average), unless Leon comes crashing back to earth. Leon's ROS projections are comically low (as, say, Jose Bautista's would have been at a comparable point in his breakout); projection systems are just not geared to deal with transformed hitters. PECOTA thinks Benny is better than Pedroia and Hanley; ZiPS and Steamer don't.
Furthermore, in this small sample Benny has been much more of a table-setter than RBI guy, but PECOTA's projection has him as the opposite sort of hitter.
A final thought: Pedroia is destined to be a great #9 hitter, if he would be OK with that. With Ortiz gone next year, you can begin by saying he's the 4th or 5th best hitter on the team, but each of these things will bump him down a notch: Hanley at DH or their signing a DH; Benny being as good as he looks; Leon being for real; eventually, Moncada joining the lineup and being as good as hoped. It gets harder and harder to justify hitting him in the top half of the lineup.
But he's a guy who needs to have good hitters behind him. Earlier I posted numbers that showed how poorly he had done when not protected by good hitters, and pointed out how he gets himself out by being too aggressive when he thinks he's the last guy who can get the job done. Now consider this: excluding IBB, he's a lifetime .305 / .368 / .456 hitter -- except with 2 outs and RISP, where he's .247 / .334 / .352 in a full season's worth of PA (679).
He's very much more a table-setter than a knock-in guy based on his numbers this year (yes, even with the GDP), so he'd be a perfect and rather deadly 9 hitter.
