2016-2017 Patriots' Season Thread
|
Post by voiceofreason on Feb 6, 2017 8:14:57 GMT -5
Atlanta is a very good offensive team, that goes without saying. Both they and the Pats have been getting off to great starts all season meaning they can play with a lead giving them a big advantage. If both offenses get off to fast starts again on Sunday I can see this game being a dogfight and being decided late. Final score being something like 40-37, Pats. The difference I see in these teams is their defenses and who can comeback from being down early? If the Pats don't get off to a fast start and find themselves down by 2 scores in the first half they wont cave or get nervous in the bright lights of the Super Bowl. They have the defense, QB and the coach to comeback and they know it. Once again something like 37-34, Pats. On the other hand if Atlanta gets down early I think the Pats have the ability to do what they do to everyone lately, stay comfortably ahead and win by double digits. It will be like most Pats games against good teams. It will seem closer that it is but the Pats will never lead by less than 7 and go on to win 37-27 or worse. That being said I am really looking forward to this game. Truly think both of these teams are the best in each conference and are peaking at the right time. Can't ask for much more in the SB. GO PATS!! HAHAHAHA.... Although I have to admit my confidence waned when Atlanta had the ball around our 20 late in the 4th and could have put the game away by simply running it a few times and kicking a FG. But alas we are not talking about BB and Brady, we are talking about the Falcons. So they take a sack, followed up by a holding penalty and end up punting the game back into the Pats hands. OMG!!! So I not only kept believing last night but I called it a few days ago. It was rougher and more dramatic than anyone could have dreamed but oh so sweet!! Epic win!! Have to say it reminds me of being down 3 to the Yankees in 04 then winning 7 straight and for the WS.

I haven't read or watched any not-sports news in 14 hours. Wonder if I can keep that streak going for another 4 years.

Simply unbelievable. Along with the GOAT, how about some props for a few of the other guys who stepped up big:
- James f'ing White: playing the role of the feature back and setting SB records for points and receptions in a game. Blount couldn't get anything going and was more or less removed from the game plan after that fumble, and Dion wasn't doing much either. Think back to last seasons' AFC Championship game when Brady kept shoving desperate passes to White, and he caught, what, 3 of them? What a performance last night.
- Amendola may not be a prominent piece on this team game-to-game, but the guy always picks the right time to have his biggest moments. He's as good as it gets when it comes to converting on 3rd downs/in the red zone. Love Danny.
- Trey Flowers is a beast. Underappreciated all season it seemed, but man was he awesome. That sack after the Julio catch was HUGE.
- Loved seeing Malcolm Mitchell emerge in the 4th with some nice first down gains to help us move down the field. Not hard to see him having a big second season.

A couple things:
1. One play that won't ever get any press is Hogan's catch on the game tying drive along the left sideline... it was a back shoulder throw that gets intercepted if he doesn't come back thru the ball to catch it... watching the replay of it you can see how subtle but huge that was.
2. Jimmy G is now a 2 time SB winning QB... how many first round picks is he worth now? Joke just a joke

The ONLY comparable to Tom Brady is Joe Montana. Obviously you posted that before the game, but at this point we're now only talking Brady in comparison to Jordan, right? The coolness on the biggest stage for so long is just unprecedented in football. The sense of inevitability when Brady and the offense get going is startling. That 4th quarter looked exactly like 20 other Patriots comebacks and drives.

Thinking back about the game there was an underrated moment that changed everything IMO: I knew Atlanta was boned when they recovered the onside kick and still had to punt. The body language changed just a bit on both the offense and defense. That was some you come at the king you best not miss mind games. There's an underrated reason why Belichick might be the best coach in any sports ever: he dares people to mess with him and they're frequently unable to and once his team smells weakness it's over.

Yet another Super Bowl win where the opponent snatched the defeat out of the jaws of victory. That's 2 SB's in a row, where the opponents have gift wrapped the hardware to the Pats. They deserve credit for the win and not quitting, and they are something else for sure, but what we saw here was experienced folks (with a shout out for the Will to Win) vs. inexperienced folks. The fact that the Falcons didn't run it 3 times after that amazing Jones catch, was as an egregious mistake as you will ever see in play call management.

There was almost 5 mins left, I understand throwing on second and 11, BUT you can't put your QB in the shotgun then take a drop and run routes that are slow to develop. Same thing on the strip sack on 3rd and 2.... you use quick routes in those situations. It's inexplicable and Ryan screwed up both times.

Also, I don't buy the whole the other teams gave those games away talk. It's crap and negative think. Preparation, superior coaching and making big plays when needed won those games. As a coach or an athlete, when you put yourself in a position to succeed, good things happen.
Butlers pick was a result of that, plus a lucky catch. Seattle being disorganized after that catch caused them to waste a key time out. And Bill recognized this and didn't bail them out. Then Hightower made an incredible stop and with the clock running, if Seattle wanted to maximize their scoring plays throwing when they did was the right call. They were in that spot because of their dumb timeout after the Kerse catch. Then Butlers made the play because they knew what was coming due to preservation and then they made the play because of perfect execution. If you want to argue they should have just take. 2 plays and run it instead of 3 then that's fine, but don't talk about it like the Seahawks gave that game away. Football is a game of preparation and the better prepared team clearly won.
Last night was a similar story for different reasons. Was there luck involved? Sure but you help make your own luck.

And then other times, you run into teams that play like the Pats and lose. As an Eagles fan, I know this pretty well. That 2004 Eagles team probably would win 8 out of 10 typical Super Bowls, but not that year because the Pats were ridiculously good.

Patriots took a time out with 3:50 seconds left with Atlanta at the 23, 2 and 11, up 8 points. Run up the middle twice, run the clock or force Pats to use last timeouts and kick a FG. Up 11 with less than 3 minutes on the clock and the Pats out of timeouts. Game over. Bad decisions by coaches and players happen when you cant handle the pressure of the moment, the game speeds up. Kind of like what you said about Jaylen Brown and the game slowing down for him. For BB and Brady the game is going in slow motion. I couldn't believe how the Pats were so methodical while coming back. I was yelling at the tv for them to move faster and take less time off the clock, wrong. Unbelievable.

We unsuccessfully tried an onside kick in the 3Q and won the game... Amazing.

There was about 7.5 Minutes left at that point down 16 and Atlanta had the ball. That and the fumble recovery or else it would not have happened because all they had to do was get a first down or two and eat up a few minutes of the clock and the Pats would have simply run out of time.

Also, Edelman's catch may have (I repeat may have) made up for David Tyree's ridiculous helmet catch.

I have to say I think people are being way too harsh on Atlanta. They tried to do what got them to SB. At that point in game Pats had shutdown running game. It's not like they couldn't have got a negative run and a holding call still. Maybe they fumble it. This wasn't like the Seahawks. They were a run first team, built around a tank of a running back. If Atlanta ran ball 3 straight times, lost a few yards and then kicker misses kick people would be all over them for not trying to win game and get a TD. Number one offense is league went for the win. All the credit in my opinion goes to Pats D, they made plays.

Wait a minute Seattle should not have ever been in position to score as they had a fluky hail mary type pass to make it to the 10 or so. That's trying to rewrite history AND the facts actually back up Carol he made the right call despite what all the cry babies say through out the country. A pass had not been picked in that situation all season through out the NFL and was very successful while running it was not successful and there had been fumbles. That's a fact, people don't let others who don't know the facts attempt to control a false narrative. Any great comeback needs both sides doing there part to make it happen, so that's a weak attempt to steal glory. They earned it.

And Bill recognized this and didn't bail them out. this was the most sublime moment of all my hours watching sports in my lifetime. Matter of fact, I can picture the TV shot that showed him very well visually. At the time I thought why isn't he calling time? But he gave them rope enough to hang themselves, and he is truly a cut above all the rest. I stand by my statement that Seattle handed them victory. When we talk about gifts, it really has nothing to do with lucky plays or the like, props to all the players who compete at such a level of durress. It has to do with tactical strategy in adversity, and honestly, it is something the other teams lack, maybe because of experience, relative to the Patriots. However, last night was Falcons game to lose, and they did. Brady didn't look good for most of the game and you can't excuse the Falcons playcall mgt. They had no business winning that game. Perhaps the disparate number of plays worked against the Falcons, but no matter, they should have won and would have 98 out of 100 times (as seen by win probability at 28-3)

Your argument has no factual basis. You can't argue something as fact, when you don't know what the outcome would have been. You can only second guess...which pretty much everyone did.

Something being "universally" panned doesn't make it fact based either. There are a lot of coaches who defended the decision for logical reasons. You can second guess for sure but people like to hate.
Also the win probability people might want to take a break. Between the election and last night they aren't rolling so hot
