LHP Daniel McGrath had a rough outing in Australia on 2/4. ERA up to 8.31
I still think he has a brief MLB run in him.

Billy Conigliaro has died at age 73. At age 21 in 1969 he hit 288/.367/.563/.929 in 90 PA playing all three OF positions. In 1970 (the year his brother set the all-time record for HRs hit by a man with vision in only one eye) he hit .281/339/.462/.801. But the downward trend continued and after 1971 he was traded (Traded by Boston Red Sox with Jim Lonborg, Ken Brett, Joe Lahoud, George Scott and Don Pavletich to Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Marty Pattin, Lew Krausse, Tommy Harper and Pat Skrable (October 10, 1971)) and he only played two more years. Edited to add a link: (he was Sox’ first ever draft pick, #5 overall) www.google.com/amp/s/www.mlb.com/amp/news/billy-conigliaro-dies.html

Billy C was angry at Yaz around that time and I think there was a Yaz and friends faction vs Conigliaro and friends faction and I think they probably made the deal with Milwaukee partially to break that up. I believe Billy C was driving the car when Tony C had his stroke in 1982 and had to rush him to the hospital.

Good to see Roenicke wind up in a good organization with a chance for another ring. He can hang out with Dave Robert, Joe Kelly, and of course Mookie.

Angels manager Joe Maddon stated Wednesday that he thinks Ty Buttrey has the potential to be one of the best relievers "in the American League and in baseball." That is high praise from the Angels skipper. Buttrey is coming off a rough 2020 campaign in which he held a 5.81 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 26 1/3 innings. However, the 27-year-old has shown flashes in the past of being an effective high leverage relief pitcher, posting an 11.0 K/9 and 10.5 K/9 over the two previous seasons. Impressive numbers for a groundball pitcher who has shown the ability to limit the long ball. Buttrey will work in a set-up role behind Angels' closer Raisel Iglesias this season.

This is so cool. Imagine if young Kaz (now a freshman in HS, time flies) achieves his baseball dreams and helps lead the Sox to another WS win in the future as his dad did in 2013.

Wow, lefthanded curveballer. The only thing he seems to have in common with his dad is his slow fastball. If his dad can teach him his splitter, look out. I'd love to see Kaz make his way back to Fenway. I mean you can't say the name Uehara without smiling.

Thyroid cancer is the least bad of the cancers, but the fact that he had lymphoma in 2006 means he has been in remission a long time. Hope it has not spread anywhere else!

I’m no doctor, so I don’t know what it means... if it even is cancer at all or something less frightening. That’s why I’m just hoping for the best. I love Lester, everything about the guy (not that that matters, really when hoping for a guy’s well-being).

While I'm not trying to downplay the severity of what he's been through, apparently the hope is that he can pitch again in about a week, so seems like a minor thing.

Former Sox outfielder Shannon Wilkerson was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma Cancer. There’s a Facebook fundraising page if anyone is interested ( Facebook Link). Back when I ran Sox Signatures I had a signing with him in 2013. He was the first signing I ever did and was awesome about introducing me to new players and helping my business grow. Always a nice guy, always made time for the fans after games, really a great kid.

Rheal Cormier, twice a Red Sock, died after a year long battle with cancer.
Thinking of the thread on reliever trades, while he was still a swingman he was traded to the Sox (with my avi Mark Whiten) for Scott Cooper (who fell off right afterwards). He was then traded away for known creep Wilfredo Cordero. Rheal then came back as a full time reliever and did great for 2 years. Pitched until he was 40.

Did he go by the nickname Frenchy? I liked it when he entered games - he didn't raise my blood pressure at all. I felt he was highly competent. I remember him pitching two solid innings in the division clincher in 1995. Solid LH reliever. Way too young. Awful. RIP

Had some really solid seasons, he was pretty valuable as a swingman on the 1995 team. Very sad to see.
