It would be interestin to see what Farrell does here if Kelly cant get out of this. Imagine Bringing Kimbrel for a 4 or 5 0uts again

Is there a more frustrating pitcher to watch on this team than Kelly? He is getting squeezed a bit though.

Kelly's idol is definitely Kimbrel from last year, but he won't even get to that point.

Kelly is the 8th inning guy......until further notice. Scott the loogy....Hembree in the 7th and Barnes the long guy until our injured guys return.
Hasn't Kelly's slider improved?!...His hard/straight fastball sets up the slider. Somebody work on his spin rate.
We need to keep Kimbrel rested and healthy...not counting on Thornburg.
Puhleeze get Smith healthy

Hey guy I understand....Kelly would not be my first choice if there were options..... and in July maybe there will be. We need both more offense and a deeper bullpen. As to complaints about Sox inaction on 3B, look if Pablo did not re-emerge we still had Hernandez, Rutledge and Holt left/right options. That was not optimum but who would have figured injuries to Holt, Hernandez and Pablo (especially on reports of his rejuvenation). I don't fault the Sox based upon reports and their options..

Per pitch/fx Joe Kelly is throwing 4 pitches (4FB, 2FB, SL, CU) fairly evenly (between 17 and 33% of the time).
Per statcast Joe Kelly has thrown the hardest pitch of the season (102.2 mph) and has the highest average velocity (for an individual pitch type) so far this season (99.1 mph)
Why is possibly the hardest thrower in baseball throwing 4 different pitches out of the bullpen?

A couple of plays Marrero made today no one else on the Sox makes.

A couple of plays Marrero made today no one else on the Sox makes. Nobody is hitting. Forget the platoon, Hernandez should be the everyday 3B until early June (after super two date) when we take a chance on a young 3B not named Bevers. Considering the 3B production, it's a nothing to lose, everything to gain, situation.

Wow. I didnt think Sale would miss his target that badly on an 0-2 pitch. Thst fastball was 98mph the fastest he threw all day. He didnt care where it landed just wanted to blow it by him. Pretty irresponsible. You've got to be kidding?

Because hitters aren't challenged by his straightball fastball? My opinion: One of the reasons why Kelly hasn't been effective despite the stuff is that his control hasn't been good enough to get ahead of hitters. He'd then try to get out of the hole by overpowering them, but without the command that requires. Don't fool yourself. Featuring hard stuff over the middle of the plate, even at 97+, isn't going to work against major league hitters. Kelly has been a poster child for that mantra. It looks to me as if he's sequencing his pitches much more effectively, for whatever reason, perhaps from working with the coaches and the catchers. The wipeout slider sets up the high hard stuff nicely. Add in the curveball and he can freeze batters in their tracks. It's never been about his stuff which can be mind-boggling. Its been about pitching, not just throwing.

On Farrell reports Tyler is sometimes throwing up to 120 feet without much carry. Hmmm...he can on some days throw a distance of home to second.... He has been on the shelf for 3 months and this is his 'progress'? Something is wrong IMO notwithstanding MRI findings.

Its been about pitching, not just throwing. I'm not very good at evaluating pitching mechanics, but does his offspeed stuff look anything at all like his fastball out of his hand? That's why Kimbrel is so effective, because almost no one can lay off his sliders since it looks exactly like his fastball and they have to cheat a little on the velocity.
