Glad they're getting the losses out of the way early.

The D will get a lotta heat tomorrow, but McDaniels gets a straight F. It's kinda a little much to expect your offense to score 43 points to win. Expecting them to convert on 4th and 1 occasionally isn't expecting too much. A quality play call helps with that.

Amendola is already hurt, this is why the Edelman injury might be the reason why the Patriots don't win this year. They'll be fine on offense. How bout that defense though? The O-line looks awful and the Patriots lose their best 3rd down player. I think they will be good but who knows by now much. Defense is a dumpsterfire.

The defense was worse, but I expected them to be a work in progress so I was more disappointed by the offense, they were terrible in the red zone and clutch situations. The defense really fell apart at the end, and they were very limited throughout the night, but the offense had many opportunities to take control of the game and failed every time. It was a bad game all around, poor coaching and in game decision making. The Super Bowl winning Patriots teams have tended to struggle early, so here's to that trend continuing.

If you knew Mitchell was that injured you should have kept Carr.
Brady looked off tonight. He clearly missed Edleman and is not fully on the same page with Cooks yet.
The DEs look horrible outside of Flowers. Wise made a few plays, but he is a rookie. Marsh looks lost, which given only 5 days isn't surprising. Big issue. Smith looked like MVP type QB. RBs got the corner with ease.

Clearly a team in progress, which is not surprising. Hightower's injury will hurt if he is out long term. Ditto Amendola, and with Mitchell in IR as well....well, it is going to take some time and patience for this team to gel.
Pretty brutal game to watch after the first quarter or so.

Carr was the sexy name but some thought Lucien was better. I think they can re-sign him after week 3 (per terms of injury settlement).
KC was so much faster/quicker than the Pats. Having to play in dime as much as NE did (w/JR on D) is not ideal. Did Harris even play?
EDIT: I'm wrong on Lucien. It's much longer than that (3 weeks after his injury settlement expires - which I believe was 3-weeks from the start). He can sign with another team at any time but with Pats, he's not a short-term solution.

I imagine this will be a rough stretch of practice until their next game at NO. How they bounce back will be telling in my opinion. Hopefully, they bounce back like in 2014 by playing Pats football. This was ugly on both sides of the ball, but it is worrisome that injuries are already an issue.

Good news (relatively speaking) on Hightower's injury - ligament sprain, not tear, and he may be OK to play some in the next game. Haven't seen anything re Amendola's injury yet.
Lots of speculation about why Brady didn't do is patented sneak in the two short yardage situations.
As others have said above, it is going to be a pretty intense set of practices before the next game - the Pats players and coaching staff should be pretty grumpy about their performance.

KVN (who played 100% of the D Snaps and 39% of the ST Snaps) signed a 2-yr extension per Mike Garafolo

I think Van Noy has a bunch of upside. I really like that move. Outside of Hightower he is the only 3 down LB we have.

My scheme-expertise is lacking but he seems locked in to an off-the-line LB role more than an edge player. I like the extension as well.

He is currently usually off the line. Used more as a coverage LB so far. I just think he could give us some pass rush help down the road. Had 25 sacks in College and 13 in one season. Would love to see some plays were they have him rush the passer in some blitz packages. Heck I want to see more blitzs in general.

We're definitely missing the lost draft pick from deflategate here. Even a guy similar in quality to Malcolm Brown would be huge. Could either have moved on from Solder and got a nice tackle or a solid DE or LB.
Solder looked like crap and almost lost us the Super Bowl. I think it was very wise of Bill not to extend him. Yes, tackles are hard to find, but cap space is valuable too and he is not worth it if he is injured or just flat out bad half the time.

I think this board did a relatively good job of not freaking out after last nights game. That said, boy the media really made the game out to be a slaughter by the Chiefs. I'll concur that the 4th quarter, was indeed a slaughter, but overall, nah? Its hard to read the articles today and remember that we were actually leading 27-21 after 3 quarters last night.

You would think. Instead they played their normal try not to give up big plays D and it didn't work. When you have Butler, Gilmore and Rowe play man coverage and Blitz like crazy.

Yes, tackles are hard to find, but cap space is valuable too and he is not worth it if he is injured or just flat out bad half the time. I don't know about that. Sure it would have helped, but this loss was about injuries and moves that didn't pan out. Edleman and Mitchell being out really hurt as Brady is not on the same page with Cooks yet. Gronk was running funny early in the game. Elay being a bust, Nink retiring, Rivers being out for year, Shea being out, along with even Langi. We were forced to play Marsh a ton and even Dorsett after only 5 days with the team. Rookies Butler and Wise played a ton. Way too much inexperience on D line. Cheifs went right at it with runs and screens all night. They got Garcia as Soldier insurance. At the same time most of the game Brady had all day to throw. He was just off and was just never in sync with his receivers. Then in 4th they stopped running and Chiefs just went after them. Danny was on Bench and it was bad. Thing is it was only one quarter and Houston is a stud pass rusher. Overall I like Soldier and don't mind paying him 10 million a year. It's hard to get good tackles, he was the 17th pick if I remember right. So you can't just easily replace him with a late first round pick. Heck you know they likely would have traded down anyway.

Sports media as a whole apparently is getting worse, they're going way too much for that shock value narrative and insane hot takes. The Pats lost to a very good team that played lights out. Nothing much to read here. While Brady did noodle arm some throws and the defense played just a tad soft, it's way too early in the season to judge anything. Again, no problem at all losing to a top team at the top of their game.

Weren't people wondering if Belichick should be fired after that one?

The loss of Edleman is their biggest problem. They really don't have anyone to take his place. Brady has it easy with Welker for a number of years, then passed on to Edleman in that role. No one else on the squad is even close to those guys. They're going to have to reinvent the offense schemes to account for their loss. Before the game, I was wondering how they were going to do that. They haven't yet.
If you played high school football, you remember how your coach reacted after a loss. Lots of yelling and screaming and a few laps. Football coaches can get crazy. Beat you like a dog. Rough week for the Pats players,

While JE is a big loss it's not one that can't be overcome. But -
- Amendola needs to be healthy (he had 6/88 before leaving the game) - The Cooks/Brady connection needs to continue to evolve (there were some good signs but also some that screams "work in progress" - Need more production from Gronk (granted, he was going up against a stud in Berry - who may/may not have gotten away with some serious holding calls) - Better play calling from McDaniels

The biggest problem is depth right now. We lost Edleman and Mitchell. Our #4 WR last year was the #1 weapon. We can't run 4 and 5 WR sets because we don't have the WRs. Last year you could get Mitchell on the other teams #3 CB, Amendola on there #4 and White on there #5 or a LB. You need depth to get those match ups.
I thought we would use our RBs a ton. I was expecting to see a bunch of formations that had White and Burkhead both playing but I didn't. That might be because the Chiefs rushed only 3, thus taking away our very good RB screens plays. Heck I would love to see a 3 RB set with White, Burkhead and Lewis. You could move them around and make the defense really confused.

They should start lining up both Burkehead, Lewis, or White at the wide receiver position if the Patriots are hurting depth wise at that postion.

Gotta believe Hollister will be active this week for some 3-TE sets, as well.
Even if they pick up a WR, how ready will he be to contribute significantly this week?
