I've purposely stayed away from here and the radio since the loss because I didn't want to get into the over-reactions. There are a million different things you can get into as to why they lost but the realities are, when the Patriots lose they often look Bad because they look so good when they win or they are really good and able to win games even when they play poorly.
They also are a group that takes time to gel, especially with so many new players. They have good coaches and they will improve as the year goes on. Yes there are things to be concerned about but year after year the coaches figure out ways to scheme and find roles to cover up their weaknesses.
And I'll leave it at this. Brady has lost 3 openers in his career. 2001, 2003 and 2014.... how did those years end up?

ESPN's Dianna Russini saying that Pats are likely moving KVN to the edge (to replace Hightower) with Harris/Roberts getting more offline LB snaps.
I want to see more of Wise and would even be interested in what Langi could do.

And Gronk is already hurt and we are just about done with week 2.
Anyone else not think that the Edelman injury isn't a big deal yet?

And Gronk is already hurt and we are just about done with week 2. Anyone else not think that the Edelman injury isn't a big deal yet? It's always been a big deal but it is something they have the talent to overcome... however, adding a pile of other injuries on top of it makes that task pretty damn difficult. The other injuries tho don't change the Edelman one. If Amendola, Gronk, Mitchell and the rest of the are healthy they can still overcome the Edelman injury. Health is certainly a huge concern at this point both offensively and the Hightower injury. Even if healthy this team was and is going to take a few weeks to come together. So many damn new players their scheme is complex and they rely on every player doing their job so one person out of place or not recognizing the situation makes them look bad. We've all watched this team long enough that we should know this by now. Sure it's possible this could be a 2009 situation where they can't get the players on point all year but I seriously doubt that with the guys they have as leaders.

If Edelman was healthy but Cooks/Hogan were out and then Gronk gets hurt, we'd be worried too.

I hope this isn't the year that's determined by injuries. It's the most important players that are going down. Without Edelman their offense is different. BB is still trying to figure it out. No matter what he does, he knows he still has to find a decent slot receiver. Long passes look good, but the money is in the short ones over the middle. That's where you get those crucial 3rd down conversions. How many more guys are going down this season? It still scares me whenever Gronk gets tackled. Will he get up? 50-50 chance.
The real test will be against the Bucs in October. They are getting really good and it's a home game for them. That could be our next loss. Maybe BB will have figured it out by then. Who could doubt him? Maybe Danny A. will be back. That slot guy is so important to Brady's offense.
And, oh yeah, who wanted to sign Butler long term for big money? He'd better straighten himself out, or that fat paycheck he was counting on will disappear.

Not so sure. I think we've seen teams pay for CBs with lesser resumes than Butler(even factoring in his awful start this year).

I want to see more of Wise and would even be interested in what Langi could do. Wise was a monster in that game. Wow, I liked him, but didn't think he was that good. The fact that the Saints coach brought up Wise as a player to worry about pre-game is amazing. We got lucky. Our Arkansas DEs are looking good so far. Even Marsh applied some pressure. I didn't notice Langi at all.

I think Langi only played 6 DEF snaps (he did have a monster hit on ST though).
Also, it looks like Harris is being considered a pure MLB and with NE not using the base much (Richards played 42 of 69 snaps as 3rd S in game 1; Roberts played 36/65 as the 2nd off-line LB in game 2) he's seeing very little playing time (2 snaps in game 1 and 1 in game 2) so I wonder how long they will keep him if that's his only role (and they aren't going to use base).

I like Butler too. He didn't put up any stats but seemed to be active and they are moving him over the line (sometimes outside, sometimes reducing inside). Still making mistakes, mind you but BB/MP showing some confidence in him.
Branch, meanwhile, only played 6 snaps.

I will say this Rowe was a better match-up for the two big WRs of the Saints. Just a match-up thing in my opinion. Butler leading DT in snaps is eye opening. As was the play of Jonathan Jones. Both looked really good and showed our great depth at CB and DT.
Dorsett even started to look good. Not sure what his injury was, but he can be a weapon. They are already running plays to get the ball in his hands.

That last drive was a thing of beauty. Also the refs need to call more holding calls against Gronk defenders. Every play the Texans were all over him.
Nice to see Cooks and Brady get on the same page when it mattered most.

McDaniels is obviously great but I really did not like how he handled the play calling in the second half outside of the first and last drives. It was like they were intentionally running to have to convert third downs. I realize these things set up play action and rest the defense etc, but it was too much. The pass rush was an issue but you can combat that will quicker throws - chipping defenders or just keeping tight ends into block. They didn't need to push the ball down field like they were trying to most of the day - they could have had some pass designed "run plays".
I will say this that there are a lot of new pieces so it's going to take time to get them all going. It usually takes time for the returning players to build the playbook throughout the season but still wasn't a fan of the play calling during that stretch.

A couple quick offensive notes:
- was relieved to get Cooks a big day both because the Pats needed it and because great receivers need the ball or you risk losing them.
- Amendola is so important to this team, please get a new punt returner.
- Allen is a great blocker but can't catch a cold. Was nice to see Hollister out there and he made s hell of a catch.
- really hope Mitchell can return.
- Dorset dressed but didn't really play (didn't notice him really at all but I was distracted a lot of the game); however based off of last week I do think it's possible they got something with him.

Nate Solder could turn into a real problem this year. I'm extra concerned as I heard recently that there were retirement rumors swirling around him this offseason. If true, this could be why his play has dropped (injury? Or is he just not as dedicated?) and could be why there hasn't been an extension.
He's made about 36m on the field in his career already. That's a lot of dough in the real world. He has been through a lot with his son and things like that can change people's perspectives of what's important in life. AND don't discount CTE concerns. Just something to watch.

I was surprised yet again by the lack of screen plays and overall lack of throwing to RBs. I only remember one screen to Lewis, maybe I missed some doing other things. Against an aggressive team like Texans screens are money usually for us.
The offense just needs to get healthy. No Dorsett and Burkhead limited us yet again. Dorsett is huge going forward. It's hard to go 4 and 5 wide if you don't have the receivers. Allen and Brady are miles apart it seems. He has been wide open a ton and yet nothing.
The D line is looking good. Flowers, Marsh and Wise brought a ton of pressure. Watson just kept escaping and making plays. At the same time the secondary has not looked good. Too many big plays.

If you're as nerdy as I am, you might enjoy this article about the Pats Offensive Packages they've been using: www.patspulpit.com/2017/9/27/16357258/tracking-the-patriots-offensive-personnel-packages-through-the-first-3-weeksI like this breakout bc it expands the depth chart to more than just 11 positions. The most used (not surprisingly) is the 11 Personnel Package (1RB, 1TE, 3WR) and the depth is pretty much as follows (with QB and OL staying the same): RB - White (79 Snaps), Gillislee (16), Lewis (7), Burkhead (1) FB - none WR - Cooks (103) WR - Hogan (103) WR - Amendola (53), Dorsett (50) TE - Gronkowski (85), Allen (18) - Guessing much of those 18 were after Gronk's injury In Power Packages (1RB/2TE/2WR, 2RB/1TE/2WR, 2RB/2TE/1WR - 21 personnel most used): RB - Gillislee (39), Burkhead (15), White (10), Lewis (7) FB - Develin (32) - some of the snaps above prob came as FB for MG and/or Rex WR - Cooks (62) WR - Hogan (62) TE - Gronkowski (61), Allen (28) In Jumbo (3TE or Extra OL) RB - Gillislee (18), Lewis (10), Burkhead (2), White (1) FB - none (save for 1 Develin snap) WR - Hogan (17), Cooks (12) TE - Allen (29) TE - Gronkowski (28) TE/OL - Hollister (19), Waddle (7), Fleming (5) - Hollister/Waddle might be closer if the latter wasn't the starting RT last week. Guessing his jumbo snaps were as a T. A similar look on the Defensive side (I hope it's to follow) would be interesting as well.

I'm almost to the point of quitting the NFL without a thought about the protests. The officiating is so terrible and subjective that no one can convince me that it's not rigged anymore. Penalties occur on every single play but they call ticky tack ones at the most important times. Or not, depending on which team the league wants to win.
