The Sale trade has looked pretty awful over the last month... Good thing we have a few years to evaluate it. yeah, it's just particularly glaring at the moment because both of our viable second base options are injured and Moncada is tearing it up right now

And Sale clearly isn't as sharp tonight. I'm glad he got to throw 12 extra pitches in a meaningless inning in his last start. 12? With the lead they had in that game he should’ve come out at 75.

JF loves trolling Sox fans. Well, he sure got me - I think it's a bad idea to have terrible hitters bat second! The genius of JF

Waythings are going with all the injuries, the division could actually get a little dicey if Houston comes in still playing for home field. Better pray Cleve wins enough to make it moot as fast as possible.

Frustrating to see Happ do this against our lineup again, hope I never see the guy pitch ever again.

Last season the Red Sox completed a hot streak to put them at 92-63 before they limped thru the rest of the season losing 8 or 9, finishing at 93-69 before getting swept. And they had a horrendous clincher that took the fun out of the party. The Red Sox completed their hot streak at Game 155 for the second year in a row bringing them to 91-64 with a 5 game lead with 7 left to play. Now the Sox lead will be down to 3, as the Red Sox have another uphill battle to climb and a decimated lineup, one that clearly doesn't hit lefty starters. Ideally Pomeranz and Sale are done pitching in the regular season and we see Elias and Velazquez gets starts this weekend, but with the 3/4/5 starters going, if NY wins again tomorrow the lead is down to 2 and suddenly the Sox need a tired Pomeranz and Sale just to try to hang onto the division, all while the lineup is pretty banged up. This is not the scenario you'd want going into the playoffs. But last year is not this year. See how it plays out first before we call on the Dire Wolf. Last year is last year. I felt the team that went into the playoffs last year was pretty healthy and looked excellent on paper and was favored to win against a decimated Indians team. This year's team has played like the little engine that could. The lineup is nowhere near as good as last season's and they are so banged up. Benitendi fouled the ball off himself twice in one AB. Betts has his wrist issue. Nunez, I don't have a good feeling about. If he does play it's hard to imagine him performing the way he was. Hanley's shoulder hasn't been right all year and Bogaerts hasn't been the same since his thumb injury. Sale and Pomeranz, whose velocity is down, look like they really, really could use a breather. The Sox need to clinch by Friday so that those two don't have to pitch Games 161 & 162. And the Sox still struggle to hit lefty starters. There's a lot to be concerned about. If any Red Sox team can overachieve it's this one, but these aren't the storylines you want to see in the final week of the season.

The short series really makes it more unpredictable. If we win the division, which is very, very, very, very, very, likely. some of those factors may not even be in play.

Sale clearly handed the Cy Young to Kluber after tonight, but man have I enjoyed this ride. We all had high hopes for him, but 8 WAR and 300+ strikeouts in his first season? We are all incredibly lucky to have watched this season.

Gas Can Hembree doesn't disappoint.
At least he is pitching himself off of the playoff roster

Hembree is the worst reliever in MLB with inherited runners on base. That's still unchanged tonight.

tough night. not helped by ump. Need to take care of business tomorrow. The Nation is getting restless, with good reason. Although these arent your fathers Red Sox, the past is hard to forget.
Get em tomorrow.

Looking at our "lineup" (or should that be tonight's "offense"), it was clear that we needed Sale to be near lights out to win.
So the outcome - at least the poor offensive showing - isn't unexpected - but the pitching the last two nights is certainly disappointing.

I'm sure that the 12 extra pitches didn't help, but I'd be surprised if it's in the top 5 reasons why we are losing tonight. Sale spent a little extra energy in his previous start for seemingly no good reason at all. Now in his next start, he clearly wasn't the same guy and gave up a poor outing this time around. THIS isn't a top 5 reason why the Sox aren't losing tonight?!!!! I'm not arguing that the 12 extra pitches was a good idea, I just think you're demonstratively exaggerating the impact of those 12 pitches on this start. I mean it is a gamethread and opinions are often whimsical and reactionary (even on a good day), but I'd blame the umpire's strike zone, our own health and offensive inadequacies, Toronto's offense, the bullpen, other "durability" problems with Sale not related to those 12 pitches (durability relating to his decrease in effectiveness over the season and on stints after shorter rest), and of course, potentially Farrell's management of the above factors. And I'm sure that the Baseball Gods deserve a shoutout as well. That's at least 5, right? I was trying to be polite. Maybe it's top 10.

Man if Dick Cheney and Bruce Wayne have taught me anything it's that if there is even an one percent chance of a colossal choke that would suck, we have to treat it as an absolute certainty. Please win tomorrow.

Something that has become really concerning is JBJ's poor recent hitting - 5 for his last 39 - 1 HR, 3 RBI. And he looks as bad as the stats indicate.
Seems like all season multiple parts of the lineup have been in deep slumps.
