I hope Bogaerts keeps something like this up going forward. He makes a big difference when he is going well.

Rick Porcello has no business being in the playoff rotation. He's played his way off of it.

Rick Porcello has no business being in the playoff rotation. He's played his way off of it. The problem is Fister has been terrible the last couple of outings, too. I really wish David Price could be stretched out. A rotation of Sale, Price, Pomeranz, and E-Rod gives the Sox their best chance. If Porcello and Fister were left off the roster, I'd probably add Maddox, but this won't happen. I think they gave up on the idea of Price starting a bit too early. That said, he could really be a force out of the pen. Now if only they could get JBJ to pretend it's June, and get some health. It'll be interesting to see what Nunez looks like by this weekend. I'm not too optimistic about his health, though. We'll just have to wait and see and hope Hanley finally has a stretch that lasts more than a few days. Also hope that Bogaerts is turning the corner, to, and that Betts isn't hampered when he comes back the way Pedroia has looked lately. They need to be able to shake the rust off. I really hope they wrap things up by tomorrow or Friday at the latest, although I'd prefer tomorrow just so some guys can get more rest. JBJ could certainly use a breather.

Whoever it is between Fister or Porcello, I don't see them lasting anymore than 4 innings, unless they're on a absolute role when they are pitching. Even then, they'll be on a short leash if they're rolling. Price is going to piggy back their starts, it's just a matter of Porcello or Fister keeping the score as low they can while they get the quick hook. This bullpen is too good to waste in the postseason. Price can go innings 3-5. Then it can be Kelly, Smith, Reed, then Kimbrel. I can even see Robby Scott sprinkled in there between Kelly and Smith but that's what day 4 of the postseason should look like.

Angels get walked off in the 10th, so the Twins clinch the second WC.
So these are the only remaining magic numbers:
2: Red Sox division, Rockies WC 3: Indians #1 seed
Meanwhile, the Sox came back from 24.4% tonight, the 11th win since August 11 in a game they were below 25%, versus 0 losses after getting to 75%.

They clearly want to limit Price’s innings, which I can understand.
Two pitchers need to step up. Nobody looks great right now.
Going off of last nights game, I haven’t seen Bogaerts swing it like that three times in a game in a while. Him getting hot in the playoffs would be an incredible boost. The lineup is a lot deeper when Bogaerts is feeling it.

Coming out of the Toronto series - the good
Price Bogaerts Hanley Smith Maddox (bullpen in general, except Kelly's speed bump)
the worrying
Sale Pomeranz Porcello injury bug JBJ in a long drought Benny and Devers in a funk
Important for the Houston series - hoping that Sale, Pom and Porcello can fix their location and/or velocity issues Keeping Hanley and Xander and Vazquez hitting Hoping Nunez and Betts and Pedey are OK and can get some good ABs in before the playoffs Hope that the parts of our offense that are stuggling - esp JBJ, but also Raffi and Benny - get turned around.

Right now, we feel real good about our RHB, assuming Mookie is healthy and hoping Pedey gets there. Xander 1, Betts 4, Hanley 6, and CV 8 -- all look like strengths. Moreland, Devers, and Benny have to slot in 3, 5, 7. Moreland's HR last night went 380+ and would have been a HR in all 30 parks. So that's maybe a good sign. And in fact his 2 HR in his last 3 starts matches the number in his previous 19. There's an argument for hitting Moreland 3rd if he's hot at all, which I'll post later after I've updated the numbers. Devers was .450 / .476 / .800 in his last 21 PA on the road trip. Facing the two LHP may have messed him up temporarily, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him get back to raking in this series. The last time they gave Benny an extra day off he went 5/8 with 4 2B in his next 2 games. He's struggled ever since, beginning with the 15 inning game in Tampa. It's reasonable to hope that he rakes in the post-season, after some downtime. JBJ's slumps and streaks are extreme but there is no knowing in advance how long they'll last. That he's ice cold right now has very little predictive value for his post-season.

It really looks like some of the younger players need a blow. Some of them have played a lonnng season at what seemed like a mostly really intense pace. That's no excuse, but watching Beni/JBJ I cant help but think they're a litte gassed mentally or physically. Watching some other playoff teams field minor league squads for weeks makes me wonder if that's the best thing long run. A lot of regulars have hit well, and if you take out 20 extra inning at bats (roughly 9 or 10) even their slash lines would be markedly higher. Yes I know that's a super asinine exercise. However this team showed me a lot, especially in the "pass the baton" department. Price throwing like he has, and if he can do it for a few innings at a time is exciting for me. Maybe the fact the rotation being up and down in terms of performance bodes well. You know because teams might not know which guy is showing up. Thats a theory, right? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Eternal optimism of the spotless mind.

There will be a lot of days between the last game and the first playoff game then a lot of days off until the World Series is over. Staying sharp might be a bigger factor depending on the circumstances.
