Not really we needed a coverage LBer and he's an old school ILB run stuffer, just like Roberts. Belichick doesn't use coverage backers. Never has, never will. I think he's right too. Myles Jack looks awesome when he's breaking up passes while covering tight ends. Pat Chung looks like, well, a safety. No one highlights Jack getting swallowed up by tight ends on running plays. But that's the cost of playing "coverage backers" One he dropped a ton of weight to run that 40 time, at 246 at pro day. Played at 255 to 260 during season. Second the Patriot certainly use different players for coverage, lately they've just used 3 safeties instead of a LBer. Roberts was never used on sure fire coverage plays.

Well at that rate, Bentley could drop another 20 lbs, run a 4.45 and you'd have your coverage linebacker (aka a safety who tries to run around blocks in the box). If you read my original comment, you'll notice I mentioned that instead of using coverage backers, NE just uses a third safety in anyway. Belichick doesn't play coverage backers. When NE had the uberathletic Jamie Collins, He got torched for big touchdowns in key games. The "coverage backer" that the Patriots "need" is typically a glorified safety who gets mauled in the running game. If Belichick followed conventional draftnik wisdom, NE would never have a shot at competing because they would be drafting for "coverage backers" and "no. 1 wideouts" just like the rest of the league..but 20 picks after the rest of the league. Instead Belichick drafts players like Bentley who, though completely overlooked in the age of "coverage backers," will eventually play 40% of the defensive snaps and help shore up a rush defense that was a sieve in the Super Bowl. But if Chicago wants to use Roquan Smith on Rob Gronkowski in coverage, be my guest.

I don't agree you don't need a coverage LB because of Collins. He was great, but would do too much free lancing and thus gave up big plays. You just need a smarter Jamie Collins type player. They offered him a big contract for a reason, when he played smart within the system he was special.

This Bentley kid already looks like a steal. Reportedly ran mid 4.6 at his pro day. Played at 255 lbs. Seems really intelligent from the interviews on YouTube. He also would have been a steal in the 7th round or as an UDFA. Huge reach, but this is what the Pats do. They may as well just trade all of their picks.

That's why they trade out as much as possible. Their board is one which fits their system.

As Bill gets older he seems to take almost no riskier type players, which in a way I get. Just late in draft, why not roll the dice? Chances are they don't make the team, so I'd like at least one upside guy that might have a red flag. A guy like DeShon Elliott, but they won't take him.

He was drafted in the 5th round... that’s no longer reach territory - it’s draft who you want territory

I agree but Bill would rather take useful guys who can fill a specific role than take a guy who might not be able to do anything at all.

Top of the 5th round for a guy almost everyone had not being drafted is a reach, not a huge mistake, but still a huge reach.
Come on Duke Ejiofor makes so much sense.

Christian Sam is a great value pick and fills a need. Love it.
Pro Football Weekly draft guide had him rated as a 1st to 2nd round prospect. A true 3 down LB that can play the run and pass. Entered the draft process late, so that likely hurt him.

Seems like they are higher on him than others. Most see a backup LB who’s a MIKE backer. We will see. Seems like he plays faster than he tests.

I'm shocked WR Equanimeous St. Brown and RB Josh Adams are still available. Not really a need, but great value. Still got Luke Falk and a bunch of other QBs sitting there.

Very. I will never fully understand their draft logic.

I guess its a good thing, they must have players they are targeting. Just a big change from past years with very few picks. I was expecting a future draft pick when they made the trade.

All those QBs and they wind up with Danny Etling?! Really hope Brady stays healthy for a long time.

There were like 8 guys that were very interesting, he wasn't one of them. Heck he was never mentioned at all. Which is saying something given he played at LSU with a ton of talent.

LSU hasn’t been that great lately and they were a running team. I don’t expect anything but I also have never seen the kid throw.
