In 2-3 years, your most likely hitting the reset button. Especially if you don't resign Betts or Sale. Better to push your chips in than to plan for the unknown really. That is really the way I look at it.
Yeap, it stinks, but it's the way the CBA is currently constructed and designed. Losing teams gain more in terms of future assets. The biggest reason why the Yankees have been collecting assets is because they hadn't been a true title contender up until last year.
It can seriously all change for the Yankees too. Severino goes down in Tommy John surgery. There goes the Yankees 5 year plan.
So best to plan for the now instead of the future, nevermind the fact that the CBA is going to be a problem with free agents holding out longer and free agency being a problem when it comes to service time (which could be changed in the next CBA).

So best to plan for the now instead of the future, nevermind the fact that the CBA is going to be a problem with free agents holding out longer and free agency being a problem when it comes to service time (which could be changed in the next CBA). I just fundamentally disagree. I think both present and future need to be carefully assessed and the choices that have the best overall outcome for both taken. You present a lot of what-ifs...how about what if Mookie or Sale is out for significant time this year? What if Benintendi goes buckwild? What if...pick your outcome. It’s all about intelligently and diligently weighing outcomes. Cashing in your 401k and buying a Ferrari because you have a family history of heart disease isn’t a smart move when put in simple terms. If it’s protein C deficiency and you have it, and your dad died at 37 and you just had your first minor heart attack at 35, maybe it is. If your parents both had heart attacks in their 70s but are still alive and you’re 37, it’s probably not. I think you’re conflating the context of the Sox’ position with worst-case scenarios, while ignoring the worst-case scenarios that torpedo your argument. The biggest reason the Yankees have been collecting assets is because they made several outstanding moves, including the Chapman flip, and because their recent farm system graduates have all been better than advertised...some much. Judge, Sanchez, Severino...all bigtime successes so far. NY held onto them because they weighed outcomes, not because they weren’t trying to compete. Hell, Chapman was a win-now acquisition. They re-assessed and traded him when their odds were less favorable of making the playoffs. But they’ve been trying to contend all along.

Craig Bjornson: "OK Joe, we'll have to pitch you back to back nights in a bases loaded situation with 1 out and the first guy you'll face have hit for a 1000 ft worth of dingers in the game already. What do you say?" Joe Kelly:

I can't wait until the game fully evolves beyond the dogma of saving your best reliever for the final three outs (even if it's the 7-8-9 guys with a collective .600 OPS, like last night). It worked out because Kelly was awesome, but...

nice comeback win. We really cant complain at all the start of the season. Catcher production....sure. The Sox can only control their play, can't worry about MFY's, until we are actually playing them. Just keep hating them, which no one seems to have a problem with around here. It is fun to hate the MFY's.

I was so confident that when the Sox went up 6-5 and Kimbrel was ready, I went to bed (exhausted from a long early morning drive to the beach for a week vacation). Woke to read about it and not the least surprised that he locked it up easily.

Some perspective on where the Red Sox currently sit. Yes, the MFY are breathing down our necks...but
We are 24-9. Quite a bit of the line up has been slumping. Price is not very good right now, and Pomeranz is still gaining strength - ERod is having trouble escaping some gotcha at bats. So I can only see upside at worst going forward. We are +62. Aside from the MFY, no other AL team is dominant at the moment.
Our upcoming sched - lots of easy picking after the MFY - and we can create separation by playing confident and winning at least 2 out of 3.
Feeling really good about things right now. And Pedey will be back soon enough...and Thornburg....and even Brockstar!

Eduardo's problems stem from his knee and how it holds up. He is also very homerun prone, but he's a solid number 4 in a rotation.

The Yankees 6th starter in German just threw a no hitter through 6 innings and got pulled.
I don't know how the Yankees find pitchers out of no where and then they go on to become a valuable piece to a rotation.

That didnt look bad but his reaction was a lot of pain. not near a tv set - what happened?! First baseman threw at Mookie running down the line on his shoulder. Looks like his whole arm went numb.

That didnt look bad but his reaction was a lot of pain. not near a tv set - what happened?! Mookie was running to second and was hit in the back with a throw from the first baseman. Was safe but fell to the ground in pain holding his right wrist. Appears that his right wrist/arm is still bothering him, but he is going out to play defense, so hopefully nothing serious.

Geez, we've had a lot of close calls with Mookie. I hope he stays healthy - I'd love to see what his season looks like when it's all said and done. He has what it takes to be MVP this year.

Sale sitting in the high 90's velocity wise, for all those who were worried about his velocity.

Great that Sale struck out the side, but he needs to work on that pitch efficiency. 22 pitches in the 1st. He has barely been getting 6 innings lately. Seems like every batter he faces works the count full. The Sox' defense is great, I think he can relax a little.

Betts is now out of the game. I hope he just needs a game off but the way he reacted was bad.

This might be the best stuff I've ever seen Sale throw. Every out is via the strikeout.
