Love that the Celtics went outside of their comfort zone and drafted size instead athleticism.
Monroe is definitely not coming back now though.

I like the pick a lot as well because the Celtics definitely need some beef upfront and that late in the first round you have no reason not to do it. Love how long he is.

Yeah... 6'9" with a 7'5" wingspan...Say what? Apparently he is an outstanding athlete, rebounder, shotblocker but not great offensively. We can deal with that. I made a comment previously where I panned his character but I confused Williams with Mitchell Robinson.

Jackie Mac w/ Fran Fraschilla, Zach Lowe and Brian Windhorst on NBA jump says he slid because of "low motor". It seemed common knowledge on the set.

They also agreed him being drafted by the hardest playing team in the league was a good thing for him.

It was the perfect combination of need and best player available. The Celtics are going to be so much fun next season if nothing really bad happens like last season.

Maybe...but is there a better guy than Stevens (and the Celtic team) to get the best out of him? What I like is that he is a great athlete in a sport where athleticism is primo. You can't make those guys with hours of practice in the gym. And if he doesn't pan out, someone else will want to trade banking on that athleticism alone.

This is pretty awesome. Baynes is here to stay too. Also reassures that Howard isn't coming to Boston.

The more I think about the pick the more I love it. Just crazy value to get a guy like that on that spot, it speaks volumes to the depth this draft had with Evans going right after him.

Talk about depth, Rawle Alkins, Trevon Duval, Allonzo Trier, Kenrich Williams, Bonzier Colson, Billy Preston and Brandon McCoy all went undrafted. I'd take all of them over Bird and Allen for the 2 way contracts. Would go crazy if we could add even one of these guys.

I like the pick.
Besides the obvious, he's actually a pretty good passer. His first year at A&M the coaches told him he actually tried to pass too much.
I think that's an interesting wrinkle being overlooked. Brad can make use of that skill.

Agreed on Williams. From everything I’ve read he’s a terrific athlete and defensive player, just not much of a shooter. But given their ability to move the ball, I’d imagine he’ll catch more than his share of lob passes, and I’ve gotta think that a team that emphasizes movement and effort will help keep him really engaged. This just seems like a perfect match, and WAY down in the draft. He could be a HUGE steal.

I think Williams would hope the Celtics bring back Smart. There's no one better on this team at the lob pass than Smart. They could connect dozens of times this season on the lob play if they teamed up on the second unit.

I do really like the pick but he’s a role player at best in this system unless he learns to shoot. He can be an incredibly valuable role player doing exactly what they need but I feel the need to point that out.

Non-Celtics note here:
The Suns absolutely nailed this draft. They got Ayton obviously and I’m not his biggest fan but the dude is good. Then they made that trade and got Mikal Bridges who adds shooting and defense and a level of maturity/ work ethos to a young team and they topped it off with Elie Okobo. My god this team will be exciting:
Pg: Knight/Okobo Sg: Booker 3/4: Jackson/Bridges C: Ayton

Absolutely love this pick at the end of the 1st round. Celts may have gotten very lucky here. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I would have been willing to move into the back end of the lottery to get him.
Read something, can't find it, that says he was poorly used at A&M and they didn't take advantage of his skill set. As for the motor, the Celts as a team will take care of that and hopefully he has a chip on his shoulder from falling so far.
IMO the strong just got stronger and this guy will contribute. That is something with the 27th pick.

He can be an incredibly valuable role player doing exactly what they need but I feel the need to point that out. I wanted to add some context to this. He’s the guy that will stop a team like the Cavs (last year) from inserting guys like Nance or Thompson into the lineup and killing us on the glass because he can match up athletically, lengthwise and is a good rebounder. This is a good thing. I pray that Stevens, Horford & company can bring out the best in him. If he’s a lazy piece of crap though they won’t be able to do anything and he won’t be here long. Edit: also of note: Brad has NEVER (college or pros) coached a guy with this skill set so it’s a brand new toy that he gets to use and try to incorporate. Good news for Williams is that he focuses on defense and understands its about switching as well as guarding your own man so he’s ahead of the curve there. Hopefully, his basketball IQ is good enough.

That is something with the 27th pick. I think I remember hearing about him being poorly used at A&M on ESPN's coverage. I don't think they were implying that he could create his own scoring opportunities, but that A&M could have exploited his size & athleticism to get more easy baskets. I do love the pick, this was their most obvious area of need and they were able to fill it with a legitimate talent. I think the best thing about this pick is that they got their big guy and didn't have to trade Rozier to get him. With the draft behind us and Irving/Rozier still on the team, I wonder how this impacts Smart. Is he gone now? My guess is that it doesn’t have any impact on Smart. I think they want to keep Smart at the right price independent of Rozier. My feeling is Rozier is Kyrie plan B, plus great depth for this year when they want to win a Title. If Marcus is too expensive, he’s gone and if not then he’s here for at least a year. I still don’t think he’s getting a big offer even just a one year deal. He’s restricted and teams hate having their money tied up in restricted free agents, cap space around the league is limited this year (won’t be next year), and teams don’t pay for defense especially on the perimeter. All it takes is one, but I’m not buying any rumor surrounding him and won’t until it actually happens.
