Shugart seems more like system filler than someone to get excited about. I would prefer they go after another tough sign with more upside than a filler type middle reliever like Shugart.

The money that Shugart is going to get isn't going to get one of those tough signs with more upside. It's not like he's a $600K dude. He's getting $125K over the cap, and they're not $125K away from signing someone more promising than Shugart.

I don't see him costing over $125,000. He has like a zero percent chance of getting more if he goes back to school. He'd likely get a lot less next year, as he's never put up impressive numbers really. So its a $125,000 or let him go back to college.

not to grab too much out a very limited sample size, but striking out the first four guys and 6 in 4 innings in the semifinals of the NCAA tourney leads me to believe he must has somewhat decent stuff. Worth the sign.

Are you basing this off of anything other than one bad inning against arguably the best team in college baseball?

I also wouldn't worry about Shugart being the guy that prevents us from signing someone else. I have to agree too with the sentiment that he won't cost us more than 125K. My guess is that he was the 2nd pick on Day 3 because the Sox think that he's a guy whose stuff plays up in relief AND he would agree to sign for 125K or under. Now that TX is eliminated I can't imagine it will take him long to sign.

Shugart was pretty meh at Texas as well as the Cape league last summer. He is 5'10" and 180 lbs. He throws upwards of 93 mph and straight, , command issues, with a profile as a middle reliever. That's why I am saying that I would prefer the Red Sox use any excess over $125k for someone with a higher ceiling, with Shugart as a fallback option. He can always go back to Texas for his senior season if things don't work out.

The Sox have now signed the players I am most excited about, #1, #11, #2, #7, #3, #4.
#3 only low there because he's a reliever. He's the one I think has the highest probability of reaching his ceiling.
CAVEAT: I once thought Bowden was better than Buccholz and that Margot was Cutch II.

I hear you about how we get sometimes get too attached to prospects. I lived in Yardley PA in the mid to late 1990s and I got to see a lot of the Red Sox AA prospects in Trenton, including Nomar, Pavano, Rose, Nixon, etc. For some reason, I thought Donnie Sadler would end up better than all of them. I also thought Rose would have been better than Pavano. Oh well.

LOL, I was in Colorado Springs (higher elevation than Denver) the year Jack Cust came through and saw several Sky Sox games. I swear he averaged 480 foot HRs and had a reasonable K rate. I never expected a career 32% strikeout rate. I thought he was going to make Babe Ruth look like a weakling.

So as far as I can tell, that leaves - Shugart (likely to sign) Machamer (no clue there, seems less & less likely) Howell (Appears to be on the fence, but likely leaning toward college) Adrian Torres (on the fence, seems to want to sign, but indicated he might be looking for more $$, although more than what is hard to tell)
Everyone else, unless there is a major surprise, has pretty much said they're going to (or returning to) college.

Gregorio Reyes has reportedly signed. My guess is they're waiting to figure out whether to send to GCL or DSL. We'll have to see what Marrero got and whether guys like Howlett or Ramsey got over slot (seems like the former may have) to determine the likelihood of any other signings. They sure did move quick this year.

Looks like Caleb Ramsey got $125k (plus college $$), but it isn't official. Marrero could get $100k or $10k. Shugart will be interesting. Some are saying $125k, Mike has $250k. If we can get Shugart for $125k, it might allow getting Machamer or Howell (assuming Howell's hangup is that he's looking for more than $125k). Anyway, I think it allows us to focus on these last 4 potential signees.
