So the Northcut signing was a bit of a coup ? How much higher was he projected to go without signability issues ? Well he was a consensus top 100 prospect on all of the big lists.

And then I guess he joins the team in Seattle but as a setup man or the closer?

Here are my "super wicked early speculative gut-check predictions" for the 2018 signing season. I don't have any inside info behind this yet, these predictions are just based on gut feel and years of history of making these projections. These initial guesstimates have usually been decently solid projections in years past, but they're just that - projections with a significant amount of possible variability. Especially this year, when the club seems to have shifted philosophies fairly significantly. Feedback is welcome and appreciated. I will update as more info comes in and as opinions evolve. Top Ten Rounds (entire amount counts towards bonus cap)Round, Overall Pick, Player, Projected Bonus1 Triston Casas $2,552,800 (reportedly signed, awaiting physical) 2 Nick Decker $1,010,500 (expected to sign soon, in Boston to take physical) 3 Durbin Feltman $600,000 (expected to sign soon, in Boston to take physical) 4 Kole Cottam $375,000 (expected to sign soon) 5 Thad Ward $311,800 (expected to sign soon) 6 Devlin Granberg $75,000 (reportedly signed) 7 Jarren Duran $189,900 8 Elih Marrero $10,000 (expected to sign soon) 9 Brian Brown $5,000 (reportedly signed) 10 Grant Williams $2,500 (reportedly signed) After 10th round, above $125K (first $125,000 does not count towards bonus cap)11 Nick Northcutt $600,000 (Expected to sign soon) 12 Chase Shugart $250,000 (Still playing in College WS) 16 Chris Machamer $300,000 After 10th round, possible $125,000 or less signs (count $0 towards cap) 13 Dylan Hardy (will sign) 14 Nick Lucky (likely to sign) 15 Andrew Politi 17 Lane Milligan (expected to sign) 18 Eddie Jimenez (likely to sign) 19 Jonathan Ortega (reportedly already signed) 20 Kason Howell (on the fence) 22 Yusniel Padron-Artiles (expected to sign) 23 Ryan Fernandez 24 Logan Browning (will sign) 25 Caleb Ramsey (will sign) 26 Korby Batesole 27 Gregorio Reyes (reportedly signed) 28 Kris Jackson 31 Connor Berry 32 Bramdon Perez (expected to sign) 33 Adrian Torres (seems very excited to sign) 35 Jeremiah Boyd (on the fence) Total spent towards cap using these projections: $5,907,400 Red Sox Cap: $5,699,100 Red Sox Cap +5%: (no draft pick penalty): $5,983,950 Super wicked early projected not to sign21 Brandon Howlett (probably makes more sense to go to FSU) 29 Mason Ronan (on the fence, but more likely to go to Pitt) 30 Ryan Bliss (will not sign, re-committed to Auburn) 34 Jared Poland (likely headed to Louisville) 36 Jake Dukart (re-committed to Oregon State, will not sign) 37 Davis Wendzel (likely headed back to Baylor) 38 Art Joven (will not sign, headed to Bakersfield) 39 Shane Selman (returning to McNeese State) 40 Zach Watson (highly unlikely to sign, almost certainly headed back to LSU) Link: Draft Signing Period PrimerUpdated projections

Right after Mike updated his projections. More money to be allocated elsewhere (probably for Northcut).

Apparently some of that to be allocated to Cottam who got more than predicted. I think $700k-$750 will be the number for Northcut.

I moved the Trey Ball and 2013 draft discussion to the Trey Ball thread. I can't imagine theres anything more to say about that pick/draft, but if there is, please do it in the appropriate thread....this thread is a great resource for signing news and we don't want to clog it with the Trey Ball conversation that won't go away.

Earlier a video clip was posted regarding Adrian Torres. I just wanted to clarify his situation as I think some were lead to believe he is likely to sign. It sounds like he was contacted in earlier in the draft but couldn't come to terms (likely at the $125K limit for post round 10 signings). He was selected later anyways but sounds unlikely to sign unless there are unexpected savings elsewhere (which could also very well be offered to someone else first). Here are some quotes from him and more good insight into how the draft works...a main takeaway is that guys selected in roughly rounds 11-20 are contacted beforehand, and I'd imagine that the vast majority of those guys agree to a number or at the very least, seem likely to sign as opposed to HS guys selected in roughly Rounds 25+. Adrian Torres

With all the talk of Feltman maybe being able to help the team this year where do people think he'll be assigned after he signs?

With all the talk of Feltman maybe being able to help the team this year where do people think he'll be assigned after he signs? I’d figure they’d start him in Salem while eying to move him up to Portland quickly. But that’s if the Sox go that route, has there been any indication that they’re looking at Feltman this way? With exception the Sox tend to be conservative in their assignments. In which case he’s a candidate for Lowell/Greenville.

With all the talk of Feltman maybe being able to help the team this year where do people think he'll be assigned after he signs? To find a comparable example, you’d probably have to go back to Craig Hansen and Jonathan Papelbon, which were over a decade ago. Vast, vast majority of the time, the Sox stick college arms in Lowell (or Greenville if they’re being aggressive). I’d think he’d go to Lowell to start, with a promotion to Greenville. And then maybe skip Salem and start in Portland next year. I don’t see the need to rush him right now. Why risk his development when we have a good and deep bullpen already. I’d have to see more out of him before I’m convinced he’s a better option than the guys we have right now.

They usually keep them in Lowell or the GCL where they'd like them to get a routine and also introduce them to their shoulder strenghening program, stuff like that. I don't remember someone starting in Salem or even Greenville so it seems a strech to see him pitch above SS ball.

Translation (approximation): Pitcher Camuyano Gregorio Reyes signed with the Boston Red Sox organization, after being claimed in round 27 in the past MLB rookie draw. In the photo, Reyes and the listener Edgar Perez.

Wow that's a sneaky good way of signing players. Future scholarships. Don't know if I've ever seen that before. Probably don't pay attention enough to these type of things though.

I believe it is pretty common for high school players across the entire MLB, not just the Sox. It would also seem logical that it would be encouraged by MLB, if not mandated.

Yeah pretty nice perk for a 25th rounder, you know? Those first 11 round picks might not need it with their bigger bonuses and higher chances of making it to the show, but for a 20 something rounder, that would be a easy perk to want to include if you're going to take them away from college to go play ball professionally and take years of their lives they could have used to study instead. Now they could still study after playing ball on the Sox dime, whether they make it or not.

I'm speculating but it would seem like a likely reason there are so many nepotism high schoolers drafted in the early rounds throughout baseball. The team gets the extra cap room, the player gets a full boat. MLB also looks good here, nobody is going to complain about scholarships. It wouldn't shock me to hear that some senior signs get post-grad scholarships. It just makes sense.

"Top three" would include Decker. Did I miss something here? Or is Decker about to sign as well? Figurative, not literal?
