Disagree. They may have said "we're taking him if we can get him under $1 million, and if he took $550, that's another $550 you can throw at another prospect(s) who might not have signed. Only way out of this terrible farm system is volume right now, and hope to hit on a few. For the discussion it is irrelevant. Obliviously his actual number that he signs for is important. The point was, whatever the number is the Red Sox knew it what it was prior to picking him, and likely prior to making any picks at all.

Yusniel Padron-Artiles and Bramdon Perez both have 'professional baseball player for the Boston Red Sox' in their Instagram bio. Flimsy evidence, but still. Has been proven correct in the past.

Add Lane Milligan to the list of the draftees that changed their social media bios. He has "Catcher in Boston Red Sox organization" on his Twitter profile. Lane Milligan

But in my defense, your honor, we're starved for prospects. And that is what we do.

Feel like early signings this year will curtail the daily arguments about “life-changing money” that people have some years. I remember the year people were losing it over Ryan Boldt almost daily lol

I don’t know if I agree with that take. The kid just got drafted by the Boston Red Sox. That’s worth one hell of a celebration. Just need to keep in under control. They may be professionals, but they’re still human. They’re allowed to party and have fun and enjoy themselves. Just stay in control. Nothing posted today, so I assume the party at the Moon Tower was fairly tame? You assumed wrong...

I'm really, really intrigued by this draft.
The hit tools are the big question marks, but the Sox potentially have a power hitting 1b in Casas, a power hitting 3b in Northcut, a power hitting RF in Decker, and an interesting offensive player LF) with a quiet potentially good hit tool (although the comment that he totally needs to rework his swing is kind of concerning) in Granberg, and a catcher with some pop in Cottam.
And oh yeah, potentially the highest impact/quickest moving closer/high leverage prospect in Durbin Feltman.
Normally you don't lust after relief prospects, but this kid is really promising (although I wouldn't push Kimbrel out of the way for him!).
The biggest questions will be the hit tools. And it's possible the new strategy is to let others develop starting pitching talent and then use surplus position players to obtain the quality proven pitchers.
Meanwhile I look forward to any other signing surprises the Sox have left. I don't know why, but for some reason I'm kind of stoked that Eddie Jimenez has signed (I think) - throws really hard.

Looks like Caleb Ramsey is signing. Nice article with some information on how the deal went down during the 20th round. A $125k signing bonus and another $216k for schooling. He will report to the GCL on Monday. Looks like the Sox will keep him in CF. Caleb Ramsey

I really getting pumped about this draft. A couple of power arms from the pen. I love the first rounder. I cam around to the catcher in the fourth round. I tell you the Sox don’t screw around if they want to sign these guys they will.

Soxprospects is filled with all sorts of suspect individuals on twitter, and it couldn't be anymore awesome for everyone here lol. It's like that classic situation where your buddy says "check out that girl at 2 o' clock." You don't want to look directly, but the guy in you can't help it to eventually look. Can't blame the Sox fans for looking in this case.

Thanks for that, I got good laugh at this. Joking aside, I've seen a few articles come out describing what type of quality individuals our draft picks are. It's kind of an added bonus that these kids are going to be fun to root for and the type of people you want to succeed in life. For sure, I get that sense too. The road from high school to potentially the majors is such a long grueling one. You really need to find guys that are going to consistently put in the work, be resilient to struggles, open to coaching, and ideally avoid the distractions common to many guys in their late teens/early 20's. I'd imagine our scouts are taking makeup very seriously in their evaluations for the most part. It seems like Casas, Decker, and Northcut are good kids, extremely motivated and extremely focused on baseball. That should help them in their development for sure.

During Theo's time as GM, it was mentioned one year that there were 200 players on Boston's pre-draft list--based on the whole spectrum of evaluation criteria--tools, projections regarding development, character, etc. I was startled that the list was not longer. It would be fascinating to see the Red Sox' 2018 pre-draft list after the deadline for signing players has passed.
How many players were on the list? How many were not picked by any team when the final round ended? How highly did the Red Sox rate their selections compared to other evaluation services such as Baseball America, MLB, Law, etc.? We will likely never know, but it would be great to have a look at the pre-draft thinking of the Red Sox.

It will be hard to sign Watson, but the Red Sox might just go for it. Nice snag in the final round, would be too bad to see it slip away. The Watson pick feels like insurance in case Northcut doesn't sign, so they have someone to throw their savings at. Good call, I hadn’t thought of that but it’s an astute observation.

I remember the year people were losing it over Ryan Boldt almost daily lol Lol, Boldt was def one of the biggest of the recent “one that got away” sources of bemoaning. I’d’ve liked to see them sign him (if I recall, they left a fair amount of $ on the table that year, so it was kind of a fair complaint), but the reality is, it’s always a crapshoot to some extent.

So the Northcut signing was a bit of a coup ? How much higher was he projected to go without signability issues ?
