You never bet against the fat pitcher. ...Ahh, shades of Mickey Lolich who once famously stated "I don't pitch with my stomach"

Interesting that the Sox prefer Johnson over Beeks at this point to start games.

Think it's safe to say that if the Sox/Yankees meet up in the post-season the Yankees won't be sending Sonny Gray out there for the Sox to beat up.
They'll go with Severino, Sabathia (the Sox need to really hit this guy or it could cost them), trade acquisition (likely a LHP like Hamels or Happ as I hope the Mets hang onto their 2 studs), and Tanaka.
It's too bad Wright got hurt, because I loved the idea of him throwing that knuckler against the Yankees.
As it is, it would be Sale, Price, Porcello, and E-Rod, but I would have liked to have seen what decision they'd make if Wright is healthy and effective as he was prior to his Seattle start. That knuckler he throws is nasty.
Am I getting way ahead of myself? Of course, but it can be fun to do.

Interesting that the Sox prefer Johnson over Beeks at this point to start games. It's possible that they're kind of showcasing Johnson, and it's also possible that it's simply easier not to have to send somebody else down to get Beeks back up again. And of course there's the 3rd possibility that they've liked what they've seen from Johnson lately and he has pitched well in 2 starts so far. While I really don't care for him in relief, it doesn't bother me if he gets a few starts here and there. There are worse options. I can think of other Red Sox teams (2011 comes quickly to mind) that would have killed for a depth option like Johnson.

is Tanaka done for the season? As far as I know, he strained both hamstrings when running as a baserunner in a interleague game. Depends on the severity of the strain it took, but if I had to guess, he'd be back after the allstar break.

is Tanaka done for the season? Maybe I missed the update, but I don't remember it being season ending. At this point Loaisiga looks like a better option than Gray. It's funny how when teams acquire Oakland pitchers they seem (maybe my own bias?) to struggle outside of that big ballpark with all that foul territory.

Interesting that the Sox prefer Johnson over Beeks at this point to start games. Beeks has struggled in 2 of his last 3 starts and Johnson has pitched pretty well as a starter. His last out certainly earned him another look.

Devers is .354 / .367 / .688 since June 17 (12 G, 49 PA). That's .075 / .072 / .130 higher than it was yesterday. So perhaps those little chats with JD may be sinking in? Hopefully/

Yeap, which is why I think he's probably a reliever. 90-92 mph fastball as a starter works in the minors, but it's tough to survive on that in the majors. There are exceptions like Johnson (who is fringe himself) and Wade Leblanc, but they are few and far between in today's high velocity game. Beeks would benefit with a uptick in velocity out of the bullpen in short stints.

The sox seem to like the idea of Johnson hitting from the pitcher slot according to the radio broadcast.

Beeks is a fly ball pitcher probably better suited for teams like Oakland with a larger ball park.
PS-I saw Joe in Musgrave pitch against the Padres Friday night, He looked very good against a light hitting Padres’ team. Might be someone to consider for starting pitching depth.

Would you trade Beeks straight up to Oakland for Lowery?

Interesting that the Sox prefer Johnson over Beeks at this point to start games. Beeks would have been short rest and it's a NL road game. Johnson has done well and he can hit.

Alex Speier @alexspeier Following Following @alexspeier More Cora: A chance Thornburg is ready to be activated. Also possible he will get one more inning, but he’s close to activation. “Probably this week he’ll be with us.”
