I got to look at brooksbaseball tonight, but Thornburg was touching 95 mph today. I don't think he's done that yet all year.
This coaching staff has been money all year. In year's past, you would only hear about other players picking up stuff to fix mechanically (like Pedrioa with Price last year). This year they completely remade Xander's approach and stance, turned Barnes into a legitimate weapon in the bullpen, and now they're fixing Thornburg. What a breath of fresh air from year's past.

Just what they needed. A low stress quick outing for Chris Sale.
Whatever they did with Thornburg worked today. I'd like to see some consistency with it but he certainly made quick work of them. Don't know if it was because it was garbage time or his stuff was that good, but it seemed like his control was a lot better.
Can't say the same about Joe Kelly who still looks like a mess, falling behind hitters. He got a gift from the umpire.
JBJ has continued to swing the bat well over the past month which is quite helpful.
A good series. Hopefully they can take 2 of 3 from Baltimore. If they can sweep they'd finally crack the .700 winning pct which is extremely hard to do this time of season. Maybe they can even come away with an Orioles LH reliever by the end of the series.

Ave velo, 94.5. 2018 previously: 93.7.
FB movement, 12.6". 2018 average previously: 11.5."
My FB effectiveness study is four years old now and was based on several years of data, so it's scaled to lower velocities. But in that study, that's a jump from 52nd out of 283, to 26th. The FB movement would rank 5th, after Antonio Bastardo, Koji, Matt Moore, and Jake McGee.
If Thornburg's too good to option (and he and Brasier both need to be given shots at the 7th), then you really need to trade Workman or Kelly if you pick up Britton.

With tonight's rainout, Yankees will be playing 20 straight days from July 31 to August 19. Sox will have four off days in that stretch.

Imo I think this would portend not trading for a RP at all rather than trading Workman or Kelly in order to acquire Britton. If that's the case, I'd so after Dozier/Merrifield and/or a Fiers type starter before getting a reliever.

People are really fickle about the relievers. Thornburg was on the shelf after major surgery, for a year no less. The release point, the command, learning the hitters, and more, ...all of it needs to be fine tuned.
While he can certainly do that in the minors why should he have to? This team specializes in blowouts. Facing ML hitters is exactly what he should be doing if they expect him to have it together by the playoffs.
There will likely be more episodes like yesterday's till it's all working. Cora's doing exactly what he should to see what pieces the team has in the pen. He can't get that from the minor leagues and no, they don't have to win every game.

JBJ will be LOLing at the haterz all the way to the WS MVP. Let's build the Jackie war wagon Edit: this horse has been beaten to a pulp, but the narrative of him hitting the ball hard and getting no results has seemed to go on for 3 months now. Some of those hits are dropping recently. He must have swigged Jobu's rum somewhere along the way because this is getting ridiculous. His slash line is only going up incrementally because he's consistently hitting the ball hard it seems every at bat. Also he can still go get it with the best of them. I wonder how long it would take even for the haters to notice the difference between him and someone like benintendi in Centerfield once Jackie is gone

Even guys like mad dog on the MLB Network are running out of excuses as to why the Red Sox continue to win. Last month it was "they haven't played anybody and the Yankees are playing all the good teams". Last week "the Redsox must be the luckiest team in terms of health in the history of baseball". The other day he flat out alluded to maybe the Redsox being the "evil empire" For some reason in my flawed brain these comments warm my soul deep

Every time Kelly comes in I get nervous. Can he hold an 8 run lead? Maybe. How do you throw 99 MPH and have trouble getting people out?
The pressure must be mounting in NY. Every time they look at the scoreboard the Sox are winning. Whew. No days off to rest. 5 games behind. Better not lose. Oh the humanity.
Damn this is fun.

That's the most emotion I've seen from porcello. How soon we forget him side suplexing Kevin Youkilis. I'll give you that, well played sir. Subconsciously I put no-hitters and championship series aside from everyday rainouts in the dog days of July against Baltimore
