Merloni mentioned it again too. Not a huge fan of him, but he's right in this case, it's something I'm noticing more and more.

Moreland is actually not very good at stretching fully to receive throws. Didn't get full extension there, and if he had he'd have gotten Mallex. Merloni has mentioned this in the past, and the Rays broadcast just brought it up on that play. Yeah Moreland steps away from the throw and doesn't come towards the throw all the time. That and he can't pick balls out of the dirt well. He's good at playing his position, but there's a lot to be desired there.

That curveball is unstoppable for Barnes, especially when he's throwing his fastball for strikes. He's throwing the pitch over 52 percent of the time in August according to Speier.
Lol Eck calls him captain hook.

That pitch to end the inning is where the biggest improvement has been made. You never could have buried that pitch and count on Blake to block it.

This Castillo guy is nasty for the Rays.
Edit- Lol Eck is hilarious. "Maybe this guy will start tomorrow?"

A nice comeback after the 3-0 hole, but after that, a great no drama, well pitched game with timely hitting. another W.

Not a bad way to get back on track. Haha. I love how 1 loss after winning 5 is considered off track. What a year.

Johnson didn't have his best stuff but he was able to grind through it.. Nice job.

JBJ last 10 games 11-35 , 3 HR 7 RBI - lifted average .212 to .222. With his glove - and he stays with going with the pitch and stops trying to pull everything - huge plus.

Always have and probably always will. I am convinced that he is one of those guys, like Dwight Evans, who will hit better as he gets older. I expect he will have a career year when he is 34.

That's great. I think there is an argument that Kiermaier is a better defensive CF than Bradley.

Flip side of this is players today have better medical care, training, equipment etc. I can’t imagine finishing a series and heading for the TRAIN for the next one... or staying in dives, or working in the off season etc. The Bambino wast facing bullpens full of 100 MPH flame throwers from the 6th inning on either. This is going to be fun. Keith Law is full of it. First Mike Trout's career stats to date, nearly 8 seasons and then another post WWII player's stats for his first 8 years, also a CF, and also won 2 MVPs in 1st 8 years and then another post WWII player's stats for his first 8 years. He also was a CF and won 1 MVP in that time. AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS 3771 774 1155 221 43 231 629 186 670 971 .306 .415 .571 .987 3937 890 1238 185 50 249 766 77 799 773 .314 .431 .576 1.007 4074 777 1291 204 79 250 709 179 505 435 .317 .391 .590 .981
Trout is a great player but so far he is not statistically better than Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays, and both of them also were sensational defensively.

Excellent game. They shook off a 3-0 deficit like it was nothing.
It was impressive how Brian Johnson rebounded from a rough 1st inning and shut them down into the 6th.
At the risk of stating the obvious I'd say there's a good shot he's on the post-season roster. I think Cora has a lot of faith in him.
Bogaerts continued to kill Tampa. 3 hits for 7 total bases and JBJ had another highlight reel catch, and I certainly like it when he hits to the opposite field.
Good way to start off the series.

You can see more and more the play of Swihart at Catcher is making the FO smart to not trade him. Especially when everyone in the media I.e. Merloni expected it to happen.
Swihart is a legit catcher. The Sox next year have a good problem. But Swihart deserves more playing time as long as he keeps improving or he deserves to be on another team. This year was understandable. We will see.

Swihart has been very impressive on Defense and you can tell he had worked hard on it. He’s been great blocking balls in the dirt (the pitchers trust him now) and made some great throws to second. Give him a year working with Leon and Varitek about game calling and he’ll be a regular catcher/ possible all-star. Hard to believe he was all but written off as a catcher earlier this year

That's great. I think there is an argument that Kiermaier is a better defensive CF than Bradley. I think the argument is that he has more room to chase more balls down in Tampa than JBJ can in Fenway. I don't think that the advanced defensive metrics can overcome a lack of opportunities because of all those doubles off the Monster being caught for outs in Tampa.

Ryan Brasier is the man. Five more years of control. I have been wondering about this for some time now. Is this true, 5 more years of control? I know Brasier does not have 6 years of MLB experience, but I thought that once the Angels (who had control over Brasier) elected to not offer Brasier a contract, he immediately became a free agent. And since the Sox signed Brasier to a 1-year deal, my understanding is that he is a FA after this season. Can someone please clarify for me how this all works? Much appreciated. if it is true that the Sox control Brasier for 5 more years, he is my opinion a savior and a candidate to slip into the closer's role if Kimbrel does not sign.

His one year contract was a minor league contract. As soon as the Sox put him on the forty man they essentially took over the control the Angels had. I haven't counted but I'm guessing he won't have a year service time this year which means six more years after this, not five.
