2018 Patriots Season Thread

I count QB, WR, TE, DT/DE, LB, S as the positions that could most use a first round talent. It'll be tough to land a QB with a first round grade late in the round, so I'd guess the most likely pick would be a DT, DE, TE or WR, but I wouldn't be shocked to see a LB or S being picked either. I guess an offensive lineman could be in play if Trent Brown departs but that would be disappointing with Wynn returning. The OL and CB groups project to be in very good shape moving forward.

I'm going DT over TE in the first round. You worried that the Pats won't be able to resign Flowers? Flowers is a DE not DT. We need an upgrade over Brown, Guy, Shelton, etc.

I’d really love a bonafide first round talent WR

I'm going DT over TE in the first round. I wouldn’t draft for position in the first round. If there was a stud DT that fell then I’d be good with one, but I’d rather a stud tight end over a solid defensive tackle. My post was more tongue in cheek tho because the guys from Iowa and Bill loves Iowa guys.

NFL probably won’t let them fire Tomlin after all the minority coaches that were fired yesterday.

I'll change my mind about 30 times before the draft. Yet I would really love to build up the D for Brady's last years. No position needs more help than DT.

I can agree with that but they also could use a linebacker and or defensive end almost as badly come next year and it might be easier to fill the DT via a free agent. Either way I do want a better defense but also Gronk may retire

WR is going to be tough to upgrade. Free agent class sucks too, if I remember. The WR draft is actually very strong this year. It is littered with "big-bodied" WRs. Kelvin Harmon AJ Brown N'Keal Harry DK Metcalf Hakeem Butler JJ Acrcea- Whiteside Tyre Brady David Sills Colin Johnson Lil'Jordan Humphrey and has speed/explosion guys: Marquise Brown Andy Isabella Paris Campbell Tyron Johnson Greg Dorcth I think it's one of the deeper WR drafts in quite some time. Give me Hakeem Butler with one of the 2nd rounders, and I'll be set

There are no clear 1st round WR, No plug and play type options that are clear Year 1 contributors. There is definitely talent in the draft. But free agency is a dumpster fire, and already includes Dorsett/Patterson/Hogan.

Golden Tate would be a decent pickup. (who by the way did very little to help the Eagles after being traded there as I expected)
I love his skillset though and having a full offseason and training camp to prepare, I think he'd be quite productive.

Either way I do want a better defense but also Gronk may retire I just have to ask how do you think LB and DE are going to be needs almost as bad? We have depth and young players at those positions. Sure in a way they could use some upgrades. Yet DT has been our weakest position this year and you have Guy and Butler signed for next year. No young players or depth at all. I'd rather resign Flowers than a DT. The type of guy we need is going to be crazy expensive. Then look at veteran WRs. Not that I don't want to draft some, yet you can't trust them. More like a couple of guys after the first round. I'm waiting on Gronk. If he retires that changes things, yet also frees up a bunch of cash. I think he's injured and will have surgery after the season. It's just a question of his desire to keep playing. I can't bring myself to think he's done yet, not after his age 29 season. It's about time we use all our picks and stop trading them for future picks! We are going to have a ton of ammo and we could really rebuild this team if Bill just uses our picks and stops all the crazy trade downs.

They kind of mean different things, but I would say there is top end talent at WR, too, esp compared to the last two years, I mean I think there are 4-5 guys better than Corey Davis was coming into the draft, and he went 5th, Mike Williams had extreme back issues and went 7th, and John Ross went 9th. I think I'd take both Browns, Metcalf, Harry, over any of those three, and over either of the 1st rounders last yr (Ridley and Moore)

Our linebackers aren’t that good and Hightower is questionable to return, imo. As for DE, if Flowers doesn’t return that arguable jumps to the top of the list. I’m discounting DT tho because, I think it’s easier and cheaper to find serviceable players for the Pats system. Brown and Shelton crapping their pants this year is pretty surprising. I don’t really like using a late first on a DT. Vince worked because he was a top 10 talent who fell because of character questions that turned out to be so far off base.

With Hightower its like 10.3 million to keep him, cost you 5 million to cut him. I think they compromise and he reduces his cap number. Yet I bring that up because you still have Bentley that was already calling plays before his injury, plus Van Noy, Roberts and my boy on IR. At worst you have two out of three starters and some depth. I wouldn't be surprised if Van Noy, Bentley, and Sam were starters next year either. DE even without Flowers has Wise, Clayborn,Rivers, Davis, Harris, Simon, etc. Yea you'd need to add a player or two, but hardly the blackhold DT is with an older Guy and Butler only. Both are more sub rushing type DTs. That's why I like this class, its so deep the quality at the end of first should be really good. A guy like Jerry Tillery would be huge for us. Much more of a Donald type DT than a space eater. Given the way the game as changed we need that, yet he can play the run also. We'll at first glance at a crazy early time DT looks like it might give you the best value at a position on need. I 100% about WR, the class looks very weak at the top and I don't trust Bill taking one. Maybe things change, but I'm targeting them after the first right now.

All teams have holes, including the Pats. I think you simply take what you think is the best value pick, then make it work. Defense is deep this draft, so that probably means NE trading back. I'd want to see 'em get a QB in the first couple rounds. Groom him to take over. Then, aside from maybe a TE at some point, focus on defense. I don't trust Belichick to draft a wide receiver high. For that matter, I don't trust him to take a corner/safety high. But safety is a position NE hasn't had to touch in a few years. Might be time to revisit with a mid rounder.

Bill has better success getting corners late and undrafted. It is also, the one position the team is more than set at. In fact, the way Gilmore, Jones and Jackson are playing they have the best 3 starring corners in football. Add McCourt, who’s playing well too and that’s 4 legit starting caliber corners with 3 stars. Jason McCourty may not be back next year; they won’t pay him much because they don’t need him but if he comes back on a value deal to play with his brother and be on a winning team then it’s possible. Duke Dawson is also here hoping to make an impact after a lost rookie year. Gilmore, should be an All-Pro this year. Jackson, has arguably been better (guy has a 42 passer rating against, which is the lowest among players with at least 75 coverage snaps by a mile). “Jackson’s final three games of the regular season cemented his status as a player to watch in the postseason, as he locked down Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, played 45 coverage snaps against the Buffalo Bills without facing a target (garnering an 88.4 overall grade) and allowed just 49 yards on seven targets against the New York Jets. He provided even more consistency in tackling, where he owns the most snaps among cornerbacks who haven’t missed a tackle. But what’s been most impressive about the rookie stud is his ability to track the deep ball. On 14 targets of 20 or more yards, he’s allowed just one completion to go along with three interceptions — a 0.0 passer rating allowed.” www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-the-patriots-secondary-has-what-it-takes-to-carry-the-team-through-the-playoffs

The way they play that playground defense, I think getting a speedy linebacker could finally fit their defense a little better. Someone to stand up better against the run than a safety but who can also cover a tight end or running back in coverage. As far as a DT I have the opposite view that the bigger run stuffer is their need over the smaller guy. Brown and Shelton were supposed to be those guys who can take 2 blockers and keep the offensive line off the backers and they haven’t been able to do it so we get gashed with the run at times. If you can find that guy in round 1 ultimately I’d be happy. I’m just scared with the late first early second DT misses.

Danny Shelton was one of the better run stuffing DT in football last year. This year the Patriots haven't even had him suit up when healthy in a bunch of games. It's a passing league and he's like a zero. So they play a ton of DEs at DT to try anc get pressure. Which allows them to get gashed if teams run. A guy like Tillery and Donald help that.
If your a big run stuffing DT like Shelton you need to be able to draw double teams if you are going to play on passing downs and at minimum push the pocket like Wilfork could so. He wouldn't get sacks, but would require two blockers thus freeing up other players. We have none of that. Haven't seen that since Valentine got injured then released. Our DTs just flat out suck. Butler and Guy wouldn't be bad as the third and fourth best players.
Yea I agree we could use another LB, I just don't see it as close to as big of a need. I also wonder if Hightower can return to his normal self next year. That might be wishful thinking, but some times guys just need more time to heal and regain strength.
