It's the catch 22 with Irving when he goes off its awesome. Yet him being the PG and going off means running our offense goes out the window. He wasn't scoring within our offense in OT, it was all iso crap or run up the court and shoot a three with 20 seconds on the shot clock. Sorry I’m really confused by this description. Kyrie took 4 shots in OT. The first he missed a jumper with 12 seconds left on the clock. Then he hit the 3 that put them up 1 which was a DESIGNED play. Kyrie brought the ball up handed off to Morris coming from left wing.. Kyrie slipped to the left side while Morris continued around to the right passing to Tatum. Horford slipped up to the top of the 3 point circle and received the pass from Tatum. Kyrie broke across from the left, got a hand off from Horford and drained a 3. That was a designed play for him to take that shot. Not some tough cavalier shot outside the offense. Next time up, is the quick shot in transition. Quick shots in transition is not the same as ISO ball. Of course there can be bad transition shots but this isn’t one of them. It was taking advantage of the defense. Sorry, but he should take that shot every time. They are up 1. It was a 3 on 3 up the court and Horford and Hayward drove to the hoops. All 3 defenders dropped below the 3 point line. So Kyrie pulled up for the wide open 3. If they are up 4 that’s different; the clock is more important. Up 1 you still need to score and you have your best shooter, who’s also on fire and you don’t want him taking a wide open 3? I guarantee you wouldn’t be upset about that shot if it were the same exact shot (same defensive pressure etc) if Kyrie passed it to someone like Rosier or Tatum running up the opposite side of the court simply because there was a pass involved. The last shot was a missed layup with no time on the shot clock, which by the way came after a Kyrie offensive rebound. Well OT is 5 minutes. That's like saying a guy didn't take a lot of shots when he took 11 in one quarter. They had 7 shot attempts in OT. He takes very hard shots, more than anyone on the team. His size makes everything harder. Add in that shot at the end of regulation. Then his quick three. I don't even care if he takes that shot. This is more of he just went off on how everyone needs to change and he's doing the exact opposite. It worked this game, yet I've seen it also kill us all season long. Add on that I saw Tatum pass up wide open threes and you see why this is an issue. Irving took 5 of the last 8 field goal attempts and made two of them.

I objected to you saying the team didn’t score within the offense (they did) in OT because Kyrie just took over and played ISO ball (he didn’t) and jacked up shots with no time off the clock (once but it was a good shot). The only shot you could even take issue with you said you don’t have a problem with, which is nice because you shouldn’t. In reality, Kyrie took 5 of the last 10 shot attempts and made 3 of them. 1. Kyrie shot at the end of regulation, which i know you didn’t like because it was isolation, but that was by design so get mad at the coach if you want. But why wouldn’t you want that matchup in that situation? Put the ball in your best scorers hands when he’s that hot. You can hate it all you want and I even get it but that’s the NBA and even basketball in general for you. So you can bang your head off the wall or just accept. That’s not a Kyrie thing that’s an NBA thing. Great scorers who are hot are getting the ball 100% of the time in isolation. Only time you can get mad is if he doesn’t pass out of a double team but Philly played it straight up and left 4 defenders on the right side on the 4 Celtics shooters clearing space for Kyrie to go one v one. 2. Kyrie jump shot (miss) 3:54 left ot 3. Tatum dunk 3:17 left 4. Hayward dunk 2:51 left 5. Hayward layup (miss) 2:22 6. Kyrie 3 2:01 7. Kyrie 3 1:29 8. Morris layup blocked 1:08 9. Tatum layup (miss) 1:03 10. Kyrie layup (miss) 0:47 used full shot clock He’s an efficient scorer. Yes, he takes hard shots at times, but he hits hard shots. This isn’t a high volume inefficient scorer like Westbrook. He took a large number of shots yesterday, no doubt, but this is the freaking NBA. Star players when they are on fire are guys you want doing that. He was 17-33 and 5-10 from deep. What’s the issue? I don’t understand, do you want a team that only wins games without someone scoring over 30? In the NBA you want star players who can take over when they are hot. I just wish we had more of them.

This is were I chime in and say that I don't care if Irving is taking more shots, even if they are tougher. I want Tatum and Kyrie taking the harder shots over Morris, Smart, and Horford.
All of the greats do it. I remember Paul Pierce doing it a ton himself. His best position on the court was point forward on offense when he told everyone to clear everyone on the team on isolation and "give me d#mn the ball."
You want your best players taking the most shots, especially when he's hitting 40 points in a game.
They won in overtime in a game where Kyrie hit 40 points, hit a clutch 3 late in the 4th quarter, and yet it's mostly complaints here.
The Celtics don't win THAT game without Kyrie, Umass. The Celtics are lucky to have him here.
Edit- What RJP said.

Haha so for me to be right they have to make the confrence finals, if not your right? That is a good one considering they only won 5 playoff games last year and the East is a lot better this year. Talk about setting it up for the win. I just have ask, you watched yesterdays game and thought Butler and Embiid can't play together? Butler went 4-7 from deep. He can shoot and provides floor spacing for Embiid. Two ball dominant players can play together and they still have more than enough floor spacing. Butler takes 46% of his shots within 10 feet in Philly, hence the guy has a perimeter game. Simmons is the issue. The Celtic can get away with not guarding him and using the extra guy to double Embiid. In todays NBA having a guy that can't shoot is hard, having a PG do that is almost impossible. Even if he was Smart it wouldn't be bad, but the guy won't even attempt wide open threes. Yet he spends a ton of time on the perimeter because Embiid needs space to work. Simmons at PG with Dominant low post scorer just isn't a good fit. It never will be and it has nothing to do with Butler. They should really trade him for a guy that can shoot. Yeah lol I kind of gave myself the upper hand. But honestly it's how they go down that will mean something. If they lose a tight series against us or the Bucks, then yeah it worked. If they get mauled like they did last year, then the Butler trade was a failure. It's how it is when you go for the "win now" trade. Simmons is not the issue by himself, the issue is that the team is poorly built to take advantage of what he does. I think Butler and Embiid can definitely play together but it's a tight fit, you add in Simmons and you have a poorly optimized machine. It's like playing a racing game and putting everything into top speed and you have a car that can't hit a corner. If they add in Fultz to that line-up, and the allure of having a top pick (one with reportedly great defense) on the floor might prove to be irresistible, you just have a team with too many overlapping strengths and weaknesses. Look at the Pelicans for another example of that. They have one of the best players in the game and another guy that is having an insane season but it's not working because they both should have the same role. Fools just get in the way of each other. This could happen to the Sixers in the playoffs once teams start packing the paint. Again, this is my take on it and it definitely could change. Maybe they will make me look like Charles Barkley saying that jumpshooting teams can't win in the league lol. I agree that Randle and Davis is a bad pairing because Randle can't shoot. He provides zero floor spacing when Davis works down low. Nevermind it's two bigs that basically should both be playing center most of the time in todays NBA. At the same time you can't blame them, they got him for almost nothing and he was by far the best player available. They just need more depth also. That Cousins trade killed their depth. Imagine that team with Heild and Dononvan Mitchell. They could have had that, funny how things workout. Everyone thought LeBron and PG13 were awesome fits next to Embiid, yet those are two players that need the ball and drive a lot. Getting those guys meant losing Redick and he's huge for them spacing the floor. The pairing isn't ideal like the Celtics big three of KG, Allen, and Pierce. Woth Rondo running the show, but very few teams have that. Heck I'd argue with Simmons and Embiid you'll never be able to get that. Embiid needs floor spacing and Simmons can't provide that. Simmons needs to be on a team like the Celtics, make him a point forward with Irving, Horford, Morris, Tatum, Brown, etc and it would totally work. His lack of floor spacing wouldn't be an issue because we don't have a true post scorer. He'd add rebounding and could do most of the play making. Plus I'm sure Stevens would force him to shot and try and find his shot. While not a perfect fit Kemba Walker would be a lot better than Simmons on that team. You wouldn't dare double Embiid and leave him open.

Just because you use the clock doesn't mean an iso play is scoring within the offense. He wasn't making quick cuts off of ball movement. Everything was iso, him creating his own shot. Iso isn't scoring within the offense. I don't want Irving taking so many of the shots during close games. I don't want a team with this talent to live and die on some of the crazy hard shots he takes. Tatum can get much easier and better looks. Also just like last year with the game on the line he never drives and passes. He tries to avoid contact on almost all of his drives. So he either makes them or we get nothing. Get into the body and draw some fouls. That's what elite scorers do like Embiid, the Greek Freak, LeBron, Harden etc. I just have to laugh because everyone praises him for this game. Next game he'll miss them and it's on the rest of the team. I posted the numbers nobody in the league takes a higher percentage of his teams shots in close games. That means the great LeBron on that very young Lakers team is playing more team ball. Talk about Westbrook all you want, he takes less shots in close games. My issue isn't even really this game, if he just did this once in a while I wouldn't care. Yet he does it all the time. Every close game. You can like it, then enjoy the ups and downs. They are going to continue. Irving just isn't good enough, heck I don't think any player is good enough to take over 50% of a teams shots in close games. It's why no other player does.

Acting like he should never be an option is the problem.

He wasn’t playing ISO the entire quarter, not even close. If you want to say his first miss, the fade away was, that then sure, but that’s one possession in the entire quarter.

In fact, a whopping 20 percent of Boston’s wins have come in overtime.... The Celtics’ statistics in extra sessions are startling. They are outscoring opponents by an average of 63.4 points per 100 possessions over 20 overtime minutes, by far the league’s best net rating in these situations. They have made 21 of 35 shots, 7 of 10 3-pointers and 13 of 14 free throws. Also, the Celtics have committed just two overtime turnovers, neither of which resulted in a point for the opposition.... Irving has played all 20 overtime minutes for the Celtics — save for the final 12 seconds Tuesday to receive a deserved ovation. He has made 10 of 16 overtime shots, 4 of 5 3-pointers, 4 of 4 free throws and scored 28 points. Furthermore, Irving has dished out seven assists and committed just one turnover, with the Celtics holding a 62-36 edge on the scoreboard overall.”

If you guys don't think the end of that game was iso, all the power to you. It was clear as day. You want to say it was the right call in that game, maybe it was. Like I said by beef is more that this happens if he's red hot or ice cold. This is the norm all season.
Look at the last 5 minutes in regulation he took 5 of the 6 shot attempts, making two of them. So that's 9 of of the last 15 shot attempts. If this was a one game he was hot type thing ok, but its not. He does this all the time.
What's the NBA record for most FG attempts without drawing a FT? Irvings only FT was a technical. I loved the go into the paint more, but you need to get contact and FTs.
If you want a crazy talented team to live and die by the way of Irving more than any other team relies on one player all the power to you. I brought this up because even though they won this is everything wrong with this team. This is why we are playing overall below our talent level on the year.
This is the exact opposite of how the big three played and last years playoff team. You know the team that played great team ball and was better than its talent level, not worse.
We won't win a championship playing like this. It's why you hear people like Jackie MacMullen hoping Hayward bounces back so you can take the ball out of Irvings hands. Basketball is a team sport and Irving takes way too many shots and controls the ball way too much in close games. Enjoy this win, just don't blame everyone else when we lose because 9 out of the last 15 shots is playing everything but team Basketball.

Incredible how so many people called the trade idiotic when it happened and it has worked out great for the Kings. While signing Randle wasn't a bad move because they indeed got him for next to nothing, it's just a symptom of how clueless the Pelicans are overall. What are they doing? What kind of basketball do they even want to play? And it's not that there is no talent on the team, it's built with no consideration to how those pieces fit around each other. Jrue Holiday hasn't been a good 3 point shooter for the past 4 years and yet he has to take a lot of 3s because Davis is inside. Old pal E'Twaun Moore is a good offensive player, but he's a terrible defender and you cannot have that when you're also playing Nikola Mirotic. Alvin Gentry is probably a great guy, but he sucks as a coach. Everything is just... Wrong. Not to mention that as a Celtics homer it's frustrating that they're wasting AD's time with this sh*t while he could be winning multiple championships with us. Agreed on Kemba, although Simmons is a much better player. While I'm not advocating for that trade, a perfect swap just looking at what the player do and how they play would be Simmons for Tatum. They would probably fit better on the other team than they do on their current one.

This seems like a pretty great game between two great teams. But I don't really know much about the NBA these days. Yeah that was a really good half. Jaylen Brown was playing really well for one. It's scary that this team depends so much on Morris though. I love Capela's game.

Wow, this game. They should remove the time limit and just play first team to 150 points.

Well, we hung with them for awhile...but...wow. Harden. Without Horford at full strength and with Hayward still not there, a fade is inevitable. Should end up closer than the score now, but this is a tough hill to climb. Theis ending up with too much on him.

I'd love to hear why Stevens would play Smart, Rozier, Hayward, Brown, and Theis so many minutes together. Why wouldn't you have a Morris or Tatum play with that unit?
Nevermind it would be nice if Houston would miss a few threes.

I don't blame Morris at all for getting kicked out for that.

Awful hustle on that - long rebound...can't let Houston get that rebound.

let's foul Harden on a few more threes....and can't anyone on our team dunk? So many missed chippies.

He will find creative ways to dish out suboptimal packages for at least 5 minutes a night.

You want to know how I want Irving to play? Just like he did in this game! We lost becsuse Houston was red hot from deep, we couldn't rebound, Stevens played some horrible lineups, Theis was a horrible match up, we fouled a 3 point shooter what 10 times?,etc. I just loved the way the team played team ball. Too bad Williams was injured because this was a perfect game for him to make a big impact because you don't need to worry about Capela scoring.

After like the 4th time I was like WTF. I don't mind using Hayward to create, but you need another scorer in that lineup if you want to play that way.

Kyrie played great last night, he also played great on Christmas Day. There’s more than one way to skin a cat and you need players that can get it done multiple ways. High volume inefficient is bad - high volume efficient is good. This is the NBA you need guys to go off every now and again.
