Yeah, my initial thought was to just brush it off. He walks well and he makes tons of contact when he does swing. I just wanted to make sure it was the right kind of contact. It sort of implicitly feels like the folks who are watching him consistently all are saying the right things, but the (small sample) underlying numbers aren't unequivocally positive. He's shown the ability to bust mini-slumps before as well.

I hadn't noticed until a few posters noted his GB% has gone up, but Casas only has 4 home runs this year and hasn't hit one in June (only 3 XBH this month too). I still assume that much of this is SSS noise, but I will be watching this more closely.
Ironic that this potential flaw in his profile comes as he was being upgraded tools/rankings-wise by certain publications.

I’m having major Lars Anderson vibes about Casas. Someone walk me down…

Ironic that this potential flaw in his profile comes as he was being upgraded tools/rankings-wise by certain publications. I would especially consider it SSS noise given that it's only 28 games total, and 11 in June. Basically he's been slumping since the Team America qualifier thingies.

I’m having major Lars Anderson vibes about Casas. Someone walk me down… Ones a Cali bro and the other is a Florida man, the personalities are probably quite different I’m not really all that concerned about Casas. He’s still the clear top prospect in this system imo

He’s still the clear top prospect in this system imo What do I know, but I saw Lars during batting practice a number of springs ago in Sarasota. He had the weakest contact of all those in his group that included Reddick who hit lasers. Lars' swing looked slow and lazy, and the contact soft. I don't think that describes Casas.

I remember thinking Lars' stats were a bit of a mirage after his big 2008 season. Lancaster was a ludicrous offensive environment, and his BABIP was off the charts. It looks like the California League offense wasn't super high in general that year, I'd love to see what Lancaster's park factor was.
Arguing that your team's big prospect is overrated can lead to you half rooting against him, which is a total bummer. Much more fun to mostly just take the optimistic view on everyone.

Really interested in Ian Cundall's report on Casas after he saw him the last 3 games (double header included): 3 Walks, 4 Strikeouts, 6 Balls in Play, 5 Grounders. In fact the sample represents what his month of June has been: Great plate discipline numbers (10 Walks, 13 Ks) and a not so great number of GBs and subsequently not so great power numbers (Slugging .300) His GB% for the season is 54% now.

I'm actually pretty encouraged by what Casas is doing (although I'm a bit of glass is half full type for sox prospects). Still though, the numbers combined with that interview show that Casas is being very cerebral and that controlling the strike zone is something he can accomplish. Factoring in his age and the level, and I'd say he's having a pretty successful year...he has plenty of time left in his development to learn to turn on pitches with his power. Put it this way, for a guy whose reputation centered around his raw power on draft day, I'd much rather him work on these aspects of the game rather than selling out to get to his power.

Very interesting interview in my mind there. I like that he's trying to develop his approach and work on being a more complete hitter rather than just selling out for power every AB. I'll take him developing his hitting and being more complete and hitting maybe 30 hrs over hitting 40+ and trying to hit everything out of the park and being a low 200s hitter.

Much rather have someone who can hurt the opposition several ways instead of once in awhile. Love Freddie Freeman and the earlier Joey Votto.

Maybe it is some letdown returning from the tourney, but he hasn't looked particularly interested. Completely disappointing for me. Good news is I had the same review of Duran at the end of the last minor league season.

A nice look at a Casas swing from yesterday's game:

Seems like a pretty decent uppercut swing plan to me. If he's hitting more gb's, I'd think it was just a matter of getting on top of too many pitches. I'm not worried about him.

Can't see where that one went but seemed like good contact with the choke up. Kind of cracks me up to see a guy his size doing that, not that it's a bad thing.

In fact big guys should do it as much as any. They have more than enough power. Greater bat to ball speed and accuracy awaits. If the Thumper could do it....

Haha I agree with you it's just seemingly rare in this day and age and looks funky at first glance.

He made it clear he was working on the skillset, specifically better contact. That should be applauded. It is what the minors are for, after all - the learning thing. He has more than enough strength to reach the seats, and he knows that. He wants to be something a little more, not just a slugger.
