2019-20 Boston Celtics Season

I would be shocked if 15 years from now Tatum wasn’t a hall of famer. Even before considering the fact that the basketball hall of fame is a bit of a joke, I can’t recall a 21-year-old averaging an efficient 23 points a game who hasn’t become a hall of fame talent. Wouldn't shock me either, Tatum's best attribute is that he's really good and really young. That only increases his chances. You can label him with a Pierce (who's a HOF) maybe or something, but Kobe? C'mon. You know? Two totally different games we are talking here. Two different ballplayers. This is like comparing Devers to Ted Williams right now. It's egregious.

So I’m with you on it being egregious to compare Tatum to a HOF player however, aI don’t seem how he’s much like Hamilton other than it’s more comfortable to compare him to a guy who’s not in the HOF.
All around game and position on the floor are nothing alike. So are we trying to compare just the offensive game? Tatum shoots way more 3s and is more of an iso scorer so I don’t see a solid comp. Can we find some comparable traits? Surely, but you can do that with a lot of guys in the NBA.
I think what we are going to find is Tatum is part of a new breed.

Ya the Hamilton comp was stat/position based. I clearly saw that the Kobe Bryant comp was going there (stat based) and was way more comfortable throwing a guy like Hamilton to compare. He should be better than Hamilton, unless things go wrong in his career (injuries). A hot month is a hot month. We just need to relax a little. I remember Jeremy Lin being the next PG of the future at one point over a hot month. Not comparing Tatum to Lin, but hot month's in basketball happen all the time. Let's see what Tatum has got in May. East might be vulnerable to the Celtics if they get healthy. Might be the best chance to make the finals.

Actually I think this may be their hardest path to the Finals during the Stevens era, the Bucks are legitimately scary. I watched their game against the Raptors last night and they're amazing. They deny inside scoring and only seem to shoot high percentage shots. They're going to be a very tough out.

Who wants to start comparing Tatum to Kobe? I see similarities. Uhh Kobe was a lot more explosive/quicker as a young player. That and the fact that they played two different positions at SG/PG and SF/PF. Did you watch Kobe play at all? Honest question. If anything, he's a better rebounding version of Richard Hamilton back in the day. I'm so confused by your comparison, Hamilton was a skinny SG, who played the same position Kobe did. The Kobe comp isn't perfect, but I see way more of his game in Tatum than Richard Hamilton. Heck if you want old school, you picked the wrong Richard, Richard Jefferson in his prime would have been a better comp, yet Tatum is already better. Tatum is a hybrid, like Kobe mixed with I don't know. I draw a blank, guy that score on the perimeter like him, then get to the Basket with ease, which is the Kobe part. Yet then he can be a monster defensively in the paint. He add muscle and strength and seems more explosive now. The scary thing for the league is it looks like he can add a lot more weight and muscle. Maybe Kobe mixed with Leonard. Yeah he's that special and just getting started.

At the same time this is the best Celtics team since the big three and Tatum/Brown just keep getting better. If we only had a good bench.

He could jump out of a gym when he was young and he might be the 3rd best athlete to put on a basketball uniform. Tatum isn't that. He's unique though. I'll give you that!!

This isn't just one month, he dominated the playoffs as a rookie the way very few players ever have. Then Irving destroyed last year's team with is ball dominating ways and poor attitude. I don't throw the word Superstar around much at all, but Tatum looks like a superstar. A complete two way player and his offense is just catching up to his D.

He still got beat by LeBron in the end. It's not like he was Michael Jordan scoring 60 points against Bird in the playoffs.

Hamilton played SG 85% of the time he played in the NBA and wasn't close to Tatum as an athlete. Your comp is worst than the Kobe comp. Hamilton in his prime wasn't as good as Tatum is right now. You are going to be hard pressed to find a comp that doesn't show HOF unless injuries played a role. He's that good at a very young age. Tatum gets to the basket whenever he wants though. You are 100% right in that Tatum isn't a Kobe level athlete, but he does a lot of things that Kobe could do. I don't think anyone said he was Kobe, just he has a lot of similar traits. Which makes sense, since he spent a lot of time training with Kobe.

That being said- -Tatum gets to the basket easily with his long strides and length as a advantage. Kobe never had that. That's how he gets to the basket easily. Just because he gets to the basket, doesn't make him Kobe. -People here were directly comparing him to Kobe. I had to fully stop that one because I did see Kobe play. They couldn't be more different.

Who took a team minus Irving and Hayward to game seven of the Eastern conference finals. Who only lost because we were so young going against one of the best players in the History of the game. What are you talking about a few good months? The guy has been top 10 in RPM all year, was an All-star at 21. He's only had a few months playing at a superstar level, but the guy is 21 years old. In 2018 you worried we didn't have enough talent because they were so you. Fast Forward to the recent Lakers game and we had the best player on the court. We litterally only lost because Walker was out and we don't have a bench.

We litterally only lost because Walker was out and we don't have a bench. Tatum is a great young player. He deserved to be in the All-Star game, despite it being a beauty contest where the best players pick what is sexy nowadays. There's still a distinction between comparing Tatum to top 20 all time. You want to talk about the best player on the floor? Kobe beat 3 HOF in the Celtics with only the help of Gasol back then to win a Finals. Tatum has a long way to go to reaching that. Tatum is going to pass LeBron someday, but it hasn't happened yet. I would still be hard pressed to pick the Celtics over the Lakers in a Finals matchup if I had money on the line. We saw what LeBron turns into first hand in the play-offs ever since he beat the HOF big 3 of the Celtics for the first time and got over that hump. Add- If Tatum is even a HOF someday, it still is a ways for him to get to Kobe level off all time greats. Like Paul Pierce is a great example of that. Would you call Pierce one of the GOATS or just one of the best in his ERA? Kobe was a GOAT (or generational talent) versus what Pierce was (a HOF talent). There's quite a distinction between even those two players.

This all started because Jimed said I see similarities in Tatum's game to Kobe's. Which you agree with. Not a single person said Tatum is the next Kobe.
Kobe was 31 during the 2009 finals, not 21! You get Gasol is a HOF player right? He ranks 27th all-time in win shares and BR has him at 93.3% to make the HOF. He was 29 during that run, while our big three were 32, 33, and 34.
Just because you didn't think Tatum was good enough to win a title doesn't mean you should trash him to try and prove you were right. Sit back and enjoy the show! I just don't get it, complaining because people see similar traits with Tatum to Kobe, then acting like he's Richard Hamilton. The crazy comparison is Richard Hamilton!!!!!!!!!
Richard Hamilton averaged 9 points per game at age 21! Richard Hamilton wasn't an all-star till age 27! Richard Hamilton never averaged over 20.1 points in any season, Tatum is over 23 points at age 21 with all NBA first team type D. I can't believe any Celtic fan would even say that, nevermind try to defend it.

First of all, trashing? The worst I said is that I'd rather compare him to a borderline HOF, rather than a top 20 talent all time. Seriously, out of all the variables, which is more egregious here?
No you're wrong too. This all started with "Who wants to start comparing Tatum to Kobe?"
When you say that, you are indirectly calling him the next Bryant or on that same level as a talent. If he had said. "I see some of Kobe's game in Tatum." I can see that. Nothing to be said.

This might be the deepest the league has been in recent memory. At the same time this is the best Celtics team since the big three and Tatum/Brown just keep getting better. If we only had a good bench. Yeah, just one scorer off the bench would have made a huge difference. They do have a lot of quality defenders in that unit, but you have to hope everyone in the top 4 are playing well in the playoffs to have a chance. Too much pressure on Tatum and Brown.

Tatum is actually close to Kobe at the same age, Hamilton average 9 points. So yeah that is trashing him with a comp that just make zero sense stat wise or style wise. I don't have any issue with saying pump the brakes it's way to early to be talking about the HOF. It certainly is. That doesn't mean you can't compare him production wise to Kobe. Who knows what he does going forward, yet we are talking about right now age 21 seasons. His game and stats match Kobe better than Hamilton and it's not even close. That certainly doesn't mean he's Kobe, but that's how impressive he currently is. If you want to compare him to a borderline HOF player than pick out a borderline type guy, not Richard Hamilton. If you want to be overly negative maybe pick out a Grant Hill type comp. Did you not see the second half of that sentence, I see similarities. Tatum has the production and has some similarities at his age. The TV announcers have litterally compared the two production wise on national TV. I litterally watched it! Like get back at me when they start comparing him to Hamilton on TV. Again nobody said he's the next Kobe, you are litterally making that up by cutting quotes in half. Richard Hamilton lol it's like April Fool's came early😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😭😭😭

I'd be very happy with Tatum's career if he averaged 18-20 points a game the next 11 years like Hamilton. That's a really solid career, not a insult. Don't get where you think that's a insult.
If you start by saying "Who wants to start comparing Tatum to Kobe?" That's where the cutoff is. That's where you lose me. That's ridiculous. Idc if a national reporter says it or not, doesn't make it any more right. Got to pick your words carefully. That statement/question alone certainly deserved criticism.
They can be similar and totally different at the same time, so we are literally going to go around in circles here and I'll stop the argument here for the sake of my sanity. I only see them being young and great. Everything else (even despite having some of the same bag of tricks offensively), yeah totally different.

Rip Hamilton was a really good player, but I don't see any similarities. I don't see Kobe in Tatum either. Honestly it may be the jersey playing tricks on me, but I see Paul Pierce in Tatum. Really good shooter, slippery guy, great defender and just solid at everything. Pierce was a heavier player, but Tatum isn't particularly fast for a wing. I just see it.
Brown is taller Avery Bradley, Smart is guard Draymond Green, Hayward is a better Wally Szczerbiak and Kemba is a non flat-earther Kyrie.

17-3 run by Utah before Brad takes a timeout. He’s worse than Andy Reid at managing timeouts.

Maybe just look at the whole sentence. Again the statement was who wants to start comparing Tatum to Kobe, I see some similarities.

Yeah they are both good defensive players that shoot threes, yet Brown can do so much more than Bradley ever could. He can actually create offense.

It wasn't meant as any disrespect against Hill, just a guy who's career was greatly impacted by injuries. I frankly missed he made the HOF and I'm slightly surprised he made it. His peak was rather short and a ton of his win shares are because he played a long time when he was good but not close to great. I mean Al Horford almost has as many win shares at age 33. Fun stat of the day at 21 Hill was still at Duke averaging 17.4, 6.9 and 5.2, Tatum is averaging 23.1, 6.9, 2.9, with 1.3 steals and .9 blocks while being top five in RPM in the NBA.
